  • 21、Paula

    8: 45 AM.

Hi ladies. We have a new client that just called this morning. Are either of you free to take the job?

    Athena

    8: 46 AM.

What's the location of the job? And what is the client expecting?

    Paula

    8: 47 AM.

Mrs. Hunter lives at the intersection of Maple Street and Givers Rd. She has a fairly large 3500 square foot house, and would like someone to come for 5— 6 hours each week, preferably on a Monday, to clean it.

    Athena

    8: 48 AM.

Sorry, that's too far for me to go. And I already have a regular client in the afternoons on Mondays.

    Julie

    8: 49 AM.

I can probably do it. I don't have any clients on Mondays at the moment.

    Athena

    8: 50 AM.

Make sure you negotiate the hours with her. Or let her know how much you can physically clean in 5. 6 hours.

    Julie

    8: 51 AM

I think it'd be fine. I'm sure she's not expecting one person to clean the entire house in those hours.

    Paula

    8: 52 AM

I can call her back to get some more details. It's always better to make sure both parties have the same expectations.

    Julie

    8: 53 AM

OK. Both of you have way more experience than me so I'll definitely listen to your advice.

    Paula

    8: 54 AM

Julie, I'll let you know when I've talked to her. You might have to call her yourself later, too.

  • 22、Dutch author Marieke Lucas Rijneveld has become one of the youngest writers to be shortlisted (列入候选) for a Booker prize, after their debut novel (处女作)made the final line-up for the International Booker.

Rijneveld. a rising star in Dutch literature, is 28― lightly older than British author Daisy Johnson was when she was shortlisted for the Booker prize in 2018 age 27. The author, who identifies as male and uses the pronouns they/them, was shortlisted after a six-hour virtual (虚拟的) judging meeting for the £50,000 prize, which is shared equally between writer and translator, for The Discomfort of Evening, translated by Michele Hutchison. The novel, tells of a girl whose brother dies in a skating accident and draws from Rijneveld’s own experiences: when they were three, their 12-year-old brother was knocked over and killed by a bus.

“Rijneveld’s language renders (重现) the world again, revealing the shocks and violence of early youth through the angle of a Dutch dairy farm. The strangeness of a child looking at the strangeness of the world is in it,” said judges of the work.

“The Discomfort of Evening is one of six novels in the running for the International Booker, each of which,” said chair of judges Ted Hodgkinson, “restlessly reinvents (重 塑)received narratives, from foundational myths to family folklore, plunging us into discomfiting and delightful encounters with selves in a state of transition (过渡)”.

Hodgkinson chaired a panel (专家组)of five judges who selected the shortlist from 124 submissions. The coronavirus pandemic meant their meeting had to be virtual, but Hodgkinson said he and his panel still managed to discuss the line-up for more than six hours.

The winner will be announced on 19 May.

C.Six novels reveal the shocks and violence of early youth on a Dutch dairy farm.

D.Hodgkinson and his panel were unhappy to discuss the line-up online for over six hours.

【3】Why did the panel have a virtual judging meeting?

    A.Because of the coronavirus pandemic.

B.Because there were too many submissions.

C.Because it was more effective online.

D.Because the judges lives too far away from each other.

【4】What is the most suitable title of the passage?

A.Booker prize winner will be announced

B.Rijneveld, one of the most youngest Booker winner

C.International Booker prize shortlist led by 28-year-old’s debut

  • 23、Almost a decade ago, we wrote, “Without applied research on how to best communicate science online, we risk creating a future where the dynamics of online communication systems have a stronger impact on public views about science than the specific research that we as scientists are trying to communicate.” Since then, the footprint of subscription-based news content has slowly decreased. Meanwhile, various information, either true or false, increasingly dominates social media. Partly as a result, extreme public views on issues such as COVID-19 vaccines or climate change emerge and grow separate.

Scientists have been slow to adapt to a shift in power in the science information ecosystem—changes that are not likely to reverse (反转). Many parts of the scientific community—especially in science, technology, and mathematics fields—respond to this challenge as usual, which has been discouraging to those who conduct research on science communication. Many scientists-turned-communicators continue to see online communication environments mostly as tools for resolving information disconnection between experts and audiences. As a result, they blog, tweet, and post videos to promote public understanding and excitement about science.

Unfortunately, social science research suggests that rapidly evolving online information ecologies are less likely to be responsive to scientists who upload content—however attractive it may seem—to TikTok or YouTube. In highly contested national and global information environments, the scientific community is just one of many voices competing for attention and public buy-in about a range of issues. This competition for public attention has produced some urgent problems that the scientific community must face as online information environments rapidly replace traditional, mainstream media.

At present, there is little that science can do to escape this dilemma (窘境). The same profit-driven tools that bring science-friendly and curious followers to scientists’ Twitter feeds and YouTube channels will increasingly disconnect scientists from the audiences that they need to connect with most urgently. Moving forward, dealing with this challenge will require partnerships among the scientific community, social media platforms, and relevant institutions.

【1】What is the function of applied research on how to communicate science online?

A.To diversify the ways of communicating science.

B.To help the public correctly understand science.

C.To promote the development of social media.

    D.To control online communication systems.

【2】What do the underlined words “this challenge” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The collapse of the scientific community.

B.The difficulty of conducting scientific research.

C.The hardships of tackling extreme views on science.

D.The change in dominant ways of communicating science.

【3】What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

A.The public care little about science online.

B.Scientists have to compete for public attention.

C.Scientists focus on uploading science content.

    D.Online information replaces traditional media.

【4】What can we infer about profit-driven media from the last paragraph?

    A.Their investment pays off.

B.Their users have confidence in them.

C.They give the public access to scientists.

D.They are barriers to science communication.

  • 24、Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.

My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.

I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.

【1】Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule ?

    A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.

    B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.

    C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.

    D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.

【2】The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ______.

    A. keep her appointment with the eye doctor

    B. meet her father who was already an old man

    C. join in the holiday celebration of the company

    D. finish her work before the deadline approached

【3】The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.

    A. avoided  B. lacked  C. abandoned  D. took

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A. The Emotional Well-being

    B. The Two Saddest Words

    C. The Most Useful Rule

    D. The Peace of Mind
