二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A good disguise keeps you hidden, right? Well, sometimes the best disguise is actually the most dazzling because research reveals that flashy metallic iridescence(金属彩虹色) can visually puzzle predators, which allows colorful prey to survive another day. Those surprising results appear in the journal Scientific Reports.

Shining iridescent color, which changes depending on the angle from which it's viewed, is favored by everything from birds to beetles and blossoms to butterflies.

“And in our research group we are of course interested in why this vivid metallic color is so widespread in nature.” Karin Kjernsmo of the University of Bristol adds that in some cases the showy splashes of light are a sexual strategy. “Here I would like to point out that in some species, particularly those that display strong sexual dimorphism(雌雄两性), such as birds of paradise or some butterflies or fishes, the occurrence of iridescence is most likely driven by sexual selection. For example, in many of these cases it is the males that have these vivid iridescent colors and they use them in mate choice or they use them as a signal to attract mates.” But iridescence also shows up in situations where reproduction is not an issue. “So what we are studying now is whether natural selection imposed by predation(捕食行为) could explain the occurrence of iridescence in prey animals.”

The idea that eyecatching colors could be used as a coverup isn't a new one.“The father of camouflage theory, Abbott Thayer, really believed that iridescence should be categorized as a camouflage strategy. And he wrote in his famous lifework ConcealingColoration in the Animal Kingdom, already in 1909, that ‘brilliantly changeable or metallic colors are among the strongest factors in an animal's concealment’. And this sounds like a completely unreasonable thing to say, because how can colors that are both brilliant and changeable contribute to animal's concealment

“In a similar way, we were asking whether iridescence, due to its changeability, could work as a form of camouflage by preventing shape recognition.” Kjernsmo and her colleagues trained bumblebees to associate a particular shape—a circle or an oval—with a sugar reward. And they found that the bees, when given a choice, would preferentially visit the shape they knew to be sweet. But when the shapes were iridescent, the bees had trouble telling them apart. “It seemed that the strikingly iridescent surfaces on our targets visually broke up the otherwise recognizable shape of the targets, which made them hard to distinguish.” As for making use of this method for hiding in plain sight, “Any practical applications is of course directly linked to any industry that has an interest in camouflage, that is how to conceal objects or make them more difficult to recognize.” The researchers are currently conducting experiments with birds, which often prey on iridescent insects to see if it helps to have a bird'seye view.

1According to the passage, iridescence is not made use of by animals to ________.

    A. live a little longer by escaping their predator(捕食者)

    B. catch the attention of their mates

    C. conceal themselves when in danger

    D. catch sight of more colorful preys

2From the study in the last paragraph, we can learn that ________.

    A. Bees can always tell the difference between a circle and an oval

    B. Bees are creatures that are fascinated by sweet things that are iridescent

    C. If a circle, with a sugar reward, is iridescent, the bees may have difficulty finding it

    D. Bees are likely to prefer circles to ovals, whether they are iridescent or not

3What will be talked about in the following paragraph?

    A. Whether there are any differences between bees and birds.

    B. Some industries that have great interest in camouflage.

    C. Why birds are not effected by iridescent insects.

    D. Which camouflage theory applies more to birds.

4Which of the following might serve as the best title of the passage?

    A. A famous camouflage strategy B. Metallic iridescent as the best disguise

    C. Colors unique to animals D. Shining colors as a sexual strategy

  • 22、   China-born filmmaker Chloé Zhao made history at the Golden Globe Awards, becoming the first woman of Asian descent (血统) and second woman ever to win the best director award in the Golden Globes’ 78-year history.

Many, including actors and critics, congratulated the director on social media. “The film is patient, open and full of sympathy, motivated by a desire to wander and observe rather than to judge or explain,” Korean American actor Daniel Dae Kim wrote on Twitter. Barbra Streisand, the first woman who had won Golden Globe for best director in 1984, said “It’s about time! Congratulations Chloé! Well deserved!” in a Twitter post.

  • 23、   In the United States, experts are calling for major changes to the admission process in higher education.

The National Center for Educational Statistics (or NCES) reported that U.S colleges and universities received more than million applications between 2013 and 2014 and admitted more than 5 million students. But the problem is not in the number of students, a new report says. The report is called 'Turning the Tide-Making Caring Common. '

The report argues that the process schools use to choose students causes major problems. David Hawkins is the Executive Director for Educational Content and Policy. He says that most colleges and universities require many things from students when they apply.

Schools usually require an essay describing a student's interests or why they want to study at that school. The schools also ask for letters from teachers describing why a student is a good candidate. But, Hawkins says, schools are most concerned with a student's high school grades and standardized test results.

The Education Conservancy is an organization that fights to make higher education equal and available. Lloyd Thacker is the Executive Director of the Education Conservancy, saying that the college admission process has changed a lot.

'Over the past 30 years, college admissions have become more complex. ' He says that ranking systems for colleges and universities are a big part of the problem.

U.S. News and World Report is a media company that creates a list of what it calls 'America's Best Colleges'. The company bases the list on information collected from colleges and universities across the country. This information includes results of standardized tests like the SAT from all of a school's students. Higher average test results help put schools higher on the list.

Thacker claims, 'Too many students are learning to do whatever it takes in order to get ahead, even if that means sacrificing their own individuality, their health, their happiness and behavior…'

'The impact on students and on parents is that college is all about where you go. The rank has nothing to do with the quality of education that goes on at the college'.

The Harvard report states that the best way to change the admission process is by changing college applications.

1When choosing students, colleges and universities attach greatest importance to  .

A.their teachers' opinion B.their personal interest

C.their academic performance D.their reasons for application

2The media company ranks the schools on the basis of  .

    A.peoples' attitude towards the schools

    B.employment rate of its graduates

    C.the schools' teaching quality

    D.information like test results

3Which of the following does Lloyd Thacker probably agree with?

A.Colleges are supposed to admit more and more students.

B.It is necessary to apply for a proper university by referring to the rank.

C.There is little relationship between colleges rank and the quality of education.

D.The better the applicants grades are, the more likely they will be admitted.

4Which of the following is the best title of the passage?

A.Higher Rankings Matter a Great Deal

B.Colleges Look to Change Admission Process

C.Colleges Admission Process Makes a Difference

    D.Testing Results Determine Students' Fate

  • 24、On a hot August morning, in a classroom overlooking New York’s Hudson River, a teacher guides a group of 3-year-olds completely in Chinese. This is just a language summer camp run by the primary school Bilingual Buds, which offers a year-round course in Chinese as well as Spanish for kids as young as 2.

A lot of research now shows the regular, high-level use of more than one language may actually improve early brain development. Knowing two or more languages can improve the ability to focus, decide and deal with information better. These important skills are grouped together, known in brain terms as “executive function”. The research suggests they develop ahead of time in bilingual children, and are already evident in kids as young as 3 or 4. Bilingual education, common in many countries, is a growing trend across the United States, with 440 elementary schools offering the study in Spanish, Chinese and French.

But Tamar Gollan, a professor at the University of California, has found a vocabulary gap between children who speak only one language and those who grow up with more. On average, the more language spoken, the smaller the vocabulary in each one. Gollan’s research suggests that while that gap narrows as children grow, it does not disappear completely. Gollan says, “Vocabulary tests help us find that bilinguals have the disadvantage, where you know the word but you just can’t get it out.”

In fact some of the values of bilingualism can’t be measured at all, of course. To speak more than one language is to open the mind to more than one culture or way of life.

Bilinguals also appear to be better at learning other new languages. Clarisse spent her early childhood in Switzerland speaking French. At 6, she learned English. Later she learned Spanish, German, and, during three years living in Tokyo, Japanese. Now she has easily mastered several languages.

【1】Why should children learn more than one language according to Paragraph 2?

    A. Because it can do good to children’s brain development.

    B. Because it’s part of a language summer camp.

    C. Because it is common in many countries.

    D. Because it is popular with children.

【2】The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 probably refers to _________.

    A. many countries

    B. bilingual children

    C. these important skills

    D. two or more languages

    【3】According to Tamar Gollan, __________.

    A. knowing two or more languages can improve children’s skills

    B. the more languages children know, the better they will be

    C. children had better not take vocabulary tests

    D. bilingual education is not always good to children

【1】 From the passage we can learn_________.

    A. Clarisse likes French best instead of Japanese

    B. bilingual education is mainly loved by children

    C. bilinguals can have a disadvantage in learning other new languages

    D. knowing more languages can help children learn more about foreign cultures
