21、Since the discovery of Otzi the Iceman in a European glacier in 1991, scientists have recovered a wealth of information from his 5, 300-year-old body. The brown-eyed, gap-toothed, tattooed (有刺青的) man, most likely spent 40 years farming and herding, and was probably suffering from a painful stomachache at the time when he died.
After 25 years of broad scientific research and media reports, the Iceman has certainly secured his place as “Europe’s Oldest Celebrity”. The Iceman was discovered back in 1991 with various clothing, including a coat, skin leggings (绑腿), a fur hat, and hay shoes. Due to the decomposition (分解) of the leather and fur over thousands of years, however, researchers have been unable to finally confirm specific animal species for some of the elements of Otzi’s clothes.
Understanding the choice of animals used in ancient clothing production-domestic or wild, local or imported-provides a unique chance to learn about the human past. Did the clothing reflect the social status of the wearer? Were animal skins selected just due to their availability, or were certain types of leathers and furs valuable for specific qualities?
Researchers were able to get ancient DNA markers in nine samples of leather and fur from different articles of the Iceman’s clothing. According to their study published in Scientific Reports, Otzi’s clothing choices were selective, practical and sensible. They confirmed that Otzi’s coat was from sheepskin, an identification already made in previous studies. However, the genetic analysis revealed that the sheep species sampled is closer to modern domestic European sheep than to their wild cousins, and the articles were made from the skins of at least four animals.
The analysis showed that part of Otzi’s coat was also made from a species of domestic goat that still lives in the hills and valleys of central Europe today. On the other hand, Otzi’s leggings were also from domestic goat leather, and not a species of wolf, fox, or dog as previous thought.
【1】What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To explain the cause of Otzi’s death.
B.To state how significant Otzi the Iceman is.
C.To describe the appearance of Otzi the Iceman.
D.To make a brief introduction to Otzi the Iceman.
【2】Why did the researchers study the clothing of Otzi the Iceman?
A.To acquire plenty of information about the human past.
B.To draw inspiration for today’s clothing design.
C.To learn about how the clothing was made.
D.To clarify the wild animals in Otzi’s time.
【3】What were Otzi’s leggings made from?
A.Imported dog skin.
B.Domestic goat skin.
C.A sort of wolf skin.
D.The skin of a fox species.
【4】What is a new finding of the scientific research?
A.Otzi’s coat was made from sheepskin.
B.The clothing reflected the social status of the wearer.
C.The sheep species sampled is closer to their wild cousins.
D.The sheep species sampled is similar to modern domestic European sheep.
22、It scarcely seems surprising that learning to underline a modal verb, such as “can”, and “may”, does little to help students use them effectively in their own writing. These words are anyway grasped by tiny children without the need to know what they are called. This may tempt the conclusion that the teaching of grammar should be shelved altogether. But there are reasons to reform it rather than throw it away.
Understanding of language is part of a wider education in what makes human beings human. How concepts are turned into sounds, and how those sounds combine to form commands or questions, are issues that have occupied many language experts. What they reveal about the mind has exercised psychologists and cognitive (认知的) scientists.
There are practical reasons to ask children to work hard at grammar, too. One is that a knowledge of it will make learning a foreign language easier. Even if you did know by nature how to make clauses in your native languages as a child — just without instruction — getting to grips with them in German or Russian in later years is simpler if you know how to define and spot them. As it is, many English-speakers come to understand grammar by studying a foreign language, rather than the other way round.
For grammarians keen on future jobs, the natural-language processing field is booming. After many years of poor results, technological wizards have developed programs for automated translation, speech recognition and other services that are actually usable, if far from perfect. These tools may rely more on knowledge of artificial intelligence than of the subjunctive, but linguistic (语言学的) expertise still matters, and may give beginners an edge over competitors whose best language is Python (编程).
Grammar could still be taught better. One small study showed improvement in some students when concepts are linked concretely to writing tasks. A cook does not need to know chemistry to make a delicious soup. But the science of how words combine to make meaning is fascinating and fundamental.
【1】Why do some people consider stopping teaching grammar?
A.Teachers’ teaching methods are far from satisfactory.
B.It’s unnecessary for small kids to grasp modal verbs.
C.Drawing lines under words fails to be effective in learning.
D.Grammar Learning doesn’t bring obvious effect to writing.
【2】Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “getting to grips with” in paragraph 3?
A.Controlling.
B.Mastering.
C.Holding on to.
D.Dealing with.
【3】When it comes to future jobs, grammarians believe _______.
A.a good command of Python is enough for programmers
B.the field of artificial technology still shows great promise
C.being expert in language means advantages in competition
D.computer geniuses will invent perfect tools to process language
【4】What’s the main idea of this passage?
A.Grammar teaching shouldn’t be stopped but reformed.
B.Scientific study of human beings benefits from grammar.
C.Grammar helps children to learn foreign languages better.
D.There’s much room for improvement in grammar research.
23、We have heard some interesting ways that 5G wireless technology might change our lives in the future.
5G short for the 5th generation mobile communication technology, promises Internet speeds between 50 to 100 times faster than current 4G systems. While 5G is set to be used in some limited areas of America this year, much of the world is not expected to receive widely available service until 2023.
One project in Britain, however, is already testing this super fast technology on an unlikely group of Internet users—cows. The project was developed by American technology company Cisco Systems. It also receives money from the British government. Cisco says the program seeks to explore the future of 5G connectivity in rural areas around the world.
Testing areas were set up at farms in three rural areas of England. The cows are equipped with 5G-connected devices (装置) that link up to a robotic milking system, which uses sensors (传感器) and machine learning to fully automate the process. System designers say technology takes over after a cow feels ready to be milked and walks toward an automatic gate. The device is designed to recognize each individual cow. It then positions equipment to the right body position for milking. During the process, machines release food for the cow as a reward.
Other 5G technology tools include automated brushes that turn on when the cow rubs up against them. Sensors also control the amount of light to the cows’ living areas depending on the weather. And an automatic feeding system makes sure the animals always get enough to eat.
Duncan Forbes, head of the project, told Reuters that the project shows the farm’s cow operations can be greatly improved with 5G technology and that the experiment provides strong evidence that 5G technology can be widely used in the future, not just on farms in Britain, but in rural communities across the world.
【1】What is the purpose of Cisco Systems’ program?
A.To win financial support from British government.
B.To test the effects of 5G technology on animals.
C.To promote its technological development in Britain.
D.To expand the future use of 5G in rural communities.

D.It makes cows eat less and milk more than before.
【4】In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
