21、 The year 2020 marks the beginning of the decade of the yold, or the “young old”, as the Japanese call people aged between 65 and 75. One might therefore expect peak retirement for baby-boomers born in 1955-60 in the coming years, but they are not retiring quietly into the background. By continuing to work, and staying socially involved, the yold will change the world, as they have done several times before at different stages of their lives.
The yold are healthier, wealthier and more numerous (众多) than previous generations of seniors. 134million 65-to-74-year-olds account for 11% of the population in rich countries in 2020, up from 99million (8%) in 2000. Health worsens with age, but the yold are resisting the decline better than most: of the 3.7 years of increased life expectancy in rich countries between 2000 and 2015. The yold are also better off: between 1989 and 2013, the median (中位的) wealth of families headed by someone over 62 in America rose by 40% , while the wealth of all other age groups declined.
The yold are not just any group of old people. The over-60s are one of the fastest-growing groups of customers of the airline business. They are also changing education. They are challenging the traditional expectations of the retired as people who wear slippers and look after the grandchildren. That will affect consumer, service and financial markets.
The rise of the yold will be a blessing to themselves, to economies and to societies. But for all this to happen, three big things will have to change. The most important is public attitudes towards older people, and in particular the expectation that 60-somethings ought to be putting their feet up and quietly retiring into the background. Government policies will have to change, too. The retirement age in many rich countries is still below the age to which many people want to work. Public policy makes retirement a cliff edge instead of a ramp (斜坡). Third, higher numbers of healthy yold people will require great changes in health spending although the yold will still be comparative healthy and active over the next decade.
【1】Why will the yold not retire quietly into the background?
A.They have a longer life expectancy.
B.They are richer than the other age groups.
C.They have an increasing population.
D.They can still play a vital role in society.
【2】What are the yold usually expected to do after retirement?
A.To stay at home babysitting grandchildren.
B.To get further education in universities.
C.To travel all over the world by plane.
D.To stay socially engaged in the company.
【3】What can be done to ensure the position of the yold?
A.Bringing forward their retirement age.
B.Being age-friendly towards them.
C.Reducing their cost in health care.
D.Taking good care of them at home.
【4】What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Three effective measures should be taken for the yold.
B.People hold different opinions over the yold’s retirement.
C.The yold continue to make a big difference to society.
D.The baby-boomers are changing our society nowadays.
22、Offline research has given rise to what’s called the “Social Brain Hypothesis”. This says that our brain’s ability to process multiple relationships creates a natural group size for humans of 100-200 people. This size is also constrained (限制) by the time required to maintain relationships — we only have so much time to devote to meeting or talking to people.
It has been suggested that social media might overcome the time constraints because posts and pictures allow us to talk to many more people at the same time even if the interaction is not direct. So psychologist Professor Robin Dunbar carried out two surveys of more than 3,300 people to see whether using the Internet really means we can have more friends.
What he found was that even among regular social media users, the average number of friends they had on Facebook was 155 in the first survey and 183 in the second, right in the bracket (范围) predicted by the “Social Brain Hypothesis”.
The first survey group, made up of regular social media users, considered only 28% of their Facebook friends to be “genuine” friends. When asked specifically how many people they would turn to for support in a crisis and how many they would turn to for sympathy, on average those groups were just 4 and 14 friends respectively, matching the offline findings of the “Social Brain Hypothesis”.
While a few people did have much larger groups of online “ friends ” on Facebook, they had similar sized support and sympathy groups to others. This suggests that when social media seem to allow someone to have more friends, it is because looser acquaintances are being included in the “friend” category, and partly because social media sites tend not to differentiate between close and more distant relationships — even though we clearly distinguish between friends and acquaintances in the offline world.
Professor Robin Dunbar explained, “social media certainly help to slow down the natural rate of decline in relationship quality that would set in once we cannot readily meet friends face to face. But no amount of social media will prevent a friend from eventually becoming just another acquaintance if you don’t meet face to face from time to time. There is something vital for face-to-face interaction that is crucial for maintaining friendships. Seeing the white of their eyes from time to time seems to be crucial to the way we maintain friendships.”
【1】Why did Professor Robin Dunbar carried out two surveys?
A.To discover if social media use can expand one’s social circle.
B.To prove social media offer a way to overcome the time constraints.
C.To explore how offline interactions allow one to have more friends.
D.To show if social media provides more communication opportunities.
【2】What do we know about the surveys’ findings?
A.They can not serve as evidence.
B.They are well above expectations.
C.They have led to more offline research.
D.They confirm the “Social Brain Hypothesis”.
【3】Why did a few people have a much larger group of online “friends” ?
A.Because they got great support and sympathy from their online social circle.
B.Because they were better at turning acquaintances into friends.
C.Because they could distinguish their friends and acquaintances clearly online.
D.Because they viewed people in their acquaintance circle as friends.
【4】What did Professor Robin Dunbar reveal in the last paragraph?
A.Social media can not replace face-to-face contact.
B.Social media affect our face-to-face socialization skills.
C.Social media fail to improve the quality of our relationships.
D.Social media have negative effects on face-to-face interaction.

24、 Remittance (汇款) increase living standards in the country of origin. Remittances m a large share of the GDP of many developing countries. A study on remittances to Mexico found that remittances lead to a considerable increase in the availability of public services in Mexico, surpassing government spending in some localities.
Research finds that emigration and low migration barriers have net positive effects on human capital formation in the sending countries. This means that there is a “brain gain” instead of a" brain drain to emigration.
One study finds that sending Countries benefit indirectly in the long run from the emigration of skilled workers because those skilled workers are able to innovate more in developed countries, which the sending countries are able to benefit as a positive externality. Greater emigration of skilled workers consequently leads to greater economic growth and welfare improvements in the long run.
Research also suggests that emigration, remittances and return migration can have a positive impact on political institutions and democratization in the country of origin. Research also shows that remittances can lower the risk of civil war in the country of origin. Return migration from countries with liberal gender norms has been associated with the transfer of liberal gender norms to the home country.
Research suggests that emigration causes an increase in the wages of those who remain in the country of origin. A 2014 survey of the existing literature on migration finds that a 10 percent emigrant supply shock would increase wages in the sending country by 2 % - 5.5 %. A study of emigration from Poland shows that it led to a slight increase in wages for high-and medium-skilled workers for remaining Poles. A 2013 study finds that emigration from Eastern Europe after the 2004 EU enlargement increased the wages of remaining young workers in the country of origin by 6%, while it had no effect on the wages of old workers. The wages of Lithuanian men increased as a result of post-EU enlargement emigration. Return migration is associated with greater household firm revenues(收入).
Some research shows that the remittance effect is not strong enough to make the remaining natives in countries with high emigration flows better off.
It has been argued that high-skill emigration causes labor shortages in the country of origin. This remains unsupported in the academic literature though. According to economist Michael Clemens, it has not been shown that restrictions on high-skill emigration reduce shortages in the countries of origin.
【1】This passage mainly tells us that ______
A.people's living standards in the receiving countries have been greatly improved
B.emigration has both advantages and disadvantages to the sending countries
C.the reasons behind economic growth in the sending countries
D.the effect of migration on the sending countries
【2】From the first three paragraphs, we know that ______
A.the emigration of skilled workers brings economic growth to developed countries
B.emigration means a kind of “brain gain” rather than "brain drain"
C.the government in Mexico should spend more on public services
D.highly qualified workers are bound to return to their home country
【3】The examples in Paragraph 5 show that ______
A.return migration makes the natives better off
B.a wage increase is associated with economic growth
C.enlargement brings welfare to all Europeans
D.emigration leads to a salary increase for remaining natives
【4】According to the passage, what can we know about the country of origin?
A.The negative effects of high-skill emigration have shown up.
B.Remittances have a good effect on maintaining social stability,
C.High migration barriers can reduce shortages of skilled workers.

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Students who have used electronic cigarettes by the time they start ninth grade are more likely than others to start smoking traditional cigarettes and other tobacco products within the next year, according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, deliver nicotine to the lungs by heating a liquid solution that contains nicotine and other chemicals to produce a spray that the user takes in.
As part of a survey of substance use and mental health among high school students in Los Angeles, the study compared the start of tobacco use among 222 students who had used e- cigarettes, but not any other tobacco products, and 2,308 who had neither used e-cigarettes or any other tobacco products when initially surveyed at the start of ninth grade. The 2,530 students who initially reported never using tobacco underwent follow-up assessments after six and 12 months. Students were asked about lifetime and past six-month use of e-cigarettes or any other forms of tobacco products.
During the first six months after being surveyed, 30.7 percent of those who had used e- cigarettes started using tobacco products, such as cigarettes, and cigars, compared to only 8.1 percent of those who had never used e-cigarettes. Over the following six months leading into the start of 10th grade, 25.2 percent of e-cigarette users had used tobacco products, compared to just 9.3 percent of nonusers.
“While teen tobacco use has fallen in recent years, this study confirms that we should continue to closely watch teen smoking patterns,” said NIDA Director Nora D. Volkow, M.D. “Parents and teens should recognize that although e-cigarettes might not have the same harmful effects of regular cigarettes, they do carry a risk of addiction.”
“Recreational e-cigarette use is becoming increasingly popular among teens who have never smoked tobacco,” said Adam M. Leventhal, Ph.D., the first author on the study. “While we cannot conclude that e-cigarette use directly leads to smoking, this research raises concerns that recent increases in youth e-cigarette use could ultimately lead to the spread of smoking- related illness."
