  • 21、Warley Woods Community (社区) Trust

Welcome to our third newsletter of the year!

Our main activity for March is our Walk for the Woods fundraising events on Saturday, 17th March, starting any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. We will be walking the distance between Warley Woods and Tipperary. It is indeed a long way 80 miles. The more people that you can get sponsor you, the more money we can raise to help look after our beautiful woodland. More information is available at our website.

The Sunday volunteers planted two beeches and an oak last week. This was thanks to the money from the Big Tree Plant and to Lisa and Gordon Whitiker, whose friends gave money for the big trees instead of for their wedding presents. Thanks to everyone who took part.

There were 15 volunteers at the Oral History Training Day which was led very ably by Julia Letts. The group will be meeting again and will start to interview the local people who have offered to tell their stories. We are happy to hear from others who would like to be interviewed about their memories of the Woods for the project. If you or anyone you know is interested, please call Viv Cole at the office. This project is financed by Heritage Lottery Fund.

The first past the finishing line will win a large chocolate egg! This year, due to popular demand, there will also be an Adults’ Easter Egg Roll following the children’s competition.

  • 22、   It’s common knowledge that the woman in Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous painting seems to look back at viewers, following them with her eyes no matter where they are in the room. But this common knowledge turns out wrong.

A new study finds that the woman in the painting is actually looking out at an angle of 15.4° off to the viewer’s right — well outside the range that people normally believe when they think someone is looking right at them. In other words, said the study author, Horstmann, “She’s not looking at you.”

This is ironic (讽刺), because the entire phenomenon of a person’s gaze (凝视) in a photograph or painting seeming to follow the viewer is called the “Mona Lisa effect”, which is absolutely real. If a person is illustrated or photographed looking straight ahead, even people viewing the portrait from an angle will feel they are being looked at. As long as the angle of the person’s gaze is no more than about 5 degrees off to either side, the Mona Lisa effect occurs.

Horstmann and his co-author were studying this effect for its application in the creation of artificial-intelligence avatars (虚拟头像) when Horstmann took a long look at the “Mona Lisa” and realized she wasn’t looking at him.

To make sure it wasn’t just him, the researchers gathered 24 people to view images of the “Mona Lisa” on a computer screen. They set a ruler between the viewer and the screen and asked the participants to note which number on the ruler intersected (相交) Mona Lisa’s gaze. To calculate the angle of Mona Lisa’s gaze as she looked at the viewer, they moved the ruler farther from or closer to the screen during the study. Consistently, the researchers found, participants judged that the woman in the “Mona Lisa” portrait was not looking straight at them, but slightly off to their right.

So why do people repeat the belief that her eyes seem to follow the viewer? Horstmann isn’t sure. It’s possible, he said, that people have the desire to be looked at, so they think the woman is looking straight at them. Or maybe the people who first coined the term “Mona Lisa effect” just thought it was a cool name.

【1】It is generally believed that the woman in the painting “Mona Lisa” ________.

A.attracts the viewers to look back

B.seems mysterious because of her eyes

C.fixes her eyes on the back of the viewers

D.looks at observers wherever they stand

【2】What did the new study find?

A.The Mona Lisa effect does not really exist.

B.The mystery of the woman’s smile in the painting.

C.The angle of the gaze in Mona Lisa effect.

D.Mona Lisa effect does not occur with Mona Lisa.

【3】The experiment involving 24 people was conducted to ________.

    A.confirm Horstmann’s belief

    B.create artificial-intelligence avatars

C.calculate the angle of Mona Lisa’s gaze

D.show how the Mona Lisa effect can be applied

【4】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Horstmann thinks it cool to coin the term “Mona Lisa effect”.

B.The Mona Lisa effect contributes to the creation of artificial intelligence.

C.Feeling being gazed at by Mona Lisa may be caused by the desire for attention.

D.The position of the ruler in the experiment will influence the viewers’ judgement.

  • 23、   The New Year is always a time of new beginnings, a time for a change, and a time to set goals.1 Here are some tips for setting career goals in a new year:

    Reflect on Your Year

Take some time to consider your career in the year that just ended. If you dislike your job, try to figure out why. Is it due to the work itself, or something about the workplace? If you like what you do, and it’s outside factors that you find limiting, it might make sense to make your goal to find a new position. 2

    Engage in Career Research

3Start to read about careers of interest by browsing websites or publications at your local bookstore or library. Identify two new careers to research each week, and keep a diary of your interest in each. For those fields with a genuine appeal, make a list of questions to research so that you can fully evaluate the suitability of that career for you.

Check Out What Your Friends Do

4 Think about the roles of colleagues, suppliers, or clients that might be a good fit for you, and interview them about the nature of their work. Share your skills list with them, and ask for help brainstorming career options that might be worth considering within their sections.

    Gain New Skills

If you want to take up a new career, consider volunteering to gain additional experience, or taking classes to learn new skills.5

A.Always be ready to learn and aim to be better.

B.Activate your curiosity about the work lives of people in your social network.

C.If you are totally in love with what you do, aim higher, and strive to be better.

D.Spend some time assessing what you like and dislike about your current situation.

E.Many people look forward to changing career paths and aiming for bigger dreams.

F.The more you research, the easier it will be to make decisions and set goals for yourself.

G.The same holds true if you feel positive about your field, but are ready for more significant responsibilities.

  • 24、This Monday, the nation will start to celebrate Presidents’ Day,just seven days before George Washington’s birthday.Everyone agrees that day is a holiday, but is it just to celebrate George Washington’s Birthday? What about Abraham Lincoln? Some government offices call it Presidents’ Day.Others say the holiday is officially Washington’s Birthday.Confused yet?

George Washington was elected the country’s first President on April 30,1789.Soon after,Americans began publicly celebrating his birthday.Presidential historians say the actual date of George Washington’s birth is February 11,1732.But a change in the calendar system 20 years later shifted all dates, making Washington’s birthday February 22,which is now well accepted. In 1879.Congress made Washington’s birthday an official federal holiday. It was the first federal holiday to celebrate an individual’s birthday. In 1968,Congress passed the Monday Holidays Act,which moved the holiday to the third Monday in February. The new law did not change the holiday’s name.It was still called Washington’s Birthday, even though some lawmakers wanted to call it Presidents’ Day to include Abraham Lincoln, whose actual birthday is February 12.

Many people argue that the holiday should celebrate all past Presidents. They feel Lincoln should be honored for his role in preserving the nation during the Civil War and helping to free slaves.Others feel the holiday should only honor Washington.the country’s first President. They say shifting the focus away from Washington would mean future generations of kids would not know about the Father of Our Country.

Laws have been introduced in Congress over the years to require use of the term “George Washington’s Birthday.”but none of those laws have been passed.Meanwhile, many state governments and school districts now use the term “Presidents’ Day.”Many stoles also use it to promote holiday sales.

Should the holiday honor Washington,Washington and Lincoln,or all past Presidents? Write to emailbag@timeforkids.com and tell us what you think.

    Museum Craze Involves More Teenagers

More museums are here waiting for you! China’s capital, Beijing, is going to open another batch (一批) of museums this year. The building of a new branch of the Palace Museum, one of the world’s most visited tourist attractions, kicked off as well.

As the museum craze has grown stronger in the past few years, teenagers in China have become more involved in exploring museums, where they can immerse (沉浸) themselves in modern technology as well as culture from the past. According to Educator magazine, visits by teenagers to museums each year increased from 220 million to 290 million in the past 5 years. Among the increasing numbers of museum visitors, many of them were teenagers accompanied by their families, reported Guangming Daily earlier this month.

To draw younger visitors, many museums are creating more offline activities for the purpose of spreading Chinese culture. They include artifact making, night visits, secret adventures, treasure evaluation, and some interesting courses. At the China Hangzhou Arts & Crafts Museum, for example, teenagers gathered around to make paper umbrellas during the Spring Festival holiday. With white gloves on and little spades in their hands, visitors in Henan province got to experience the daily work of archaeologists (考古学家). Apart from the activities, some museums even open branches especially designed for teenagers. A hall called Popular Agricultural Science for Young Visitors is a special branch launched by China Agricultural Museum. It is an exhibition hall that combines both visual and audio technology to involve teenagers in agriculture. Besides these offline approaches, a number of museums have also created official websites for teenagers, the Palace Museum in particular. Online visitors may go on an exciting adventure on the website in the style of a comic book.
