二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The annoying persons walking down the street with their heads buried in their cellphones—sometimes you could be one of them—are not just slowing themselves down. They are also damaging other people's ability to move quickly and efficiently(有效地), according to a new study.

Like flocks of birds or schools of fish, human crowds self-organize to move safely and efficiently. But such efficiency is only possible when people can anticipate others' moves so that they can adjust their own movements accordingly.

To test how a phone tapper might mess with this flow, scientists set up a straight passage on a closed-off street for two groups of 27 pedestrians to walk down in opposite directions. They tracked each person's path of travel, measured how fast these walkers were moving, and calculated the groups' order parameter, which measures where and when straight lanes(路线) formed. The researchers also tasked three participants in one group with typing on their phones as they walked, and ran three different experimental conditions where the participants using cellphones were in front, middle or back of their walking group.

Such is what happened with the inattentive individuals in front: Lanes both behind and opposite them developed slowly and—when compared with the middle and back positions—several seconds later than they would have if all pedestrians were alert(警觉的).

As expected, phone users had trouble making predictions about the movements of others because they couldn't see the crowd around them. But the researchers also found that alert pedestrians, especially those moving toward cellphone users, had to make sharp turns or step out of the way to avoid collisions. The volunteers were also unable to tell the moves of the inattentive walkers in advance, even though they could devote their full attention to the paths in front of them.

【1】What does the underlined word “anticipate” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Predict.

    B.Copy.

    C.Block.

    D.Change.

【2】What did the researchers do to all the participants in their tests?

    A.They changed their walking path.

    B.They kept them using cellphones.

    C.They tracked their mental changes.

    D.They measured their walking speed.

【3】What do the last two paragraphs focus on?

    A.The findings of the study.

    B.How to walk attentively.

    C.How to avoid collisions.

    D.The meanings of the study.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.More and more pedestrians are using cellphones.

B.Pedestrians should be mindful of careless walkers.

C.Inattentive pedestrians are losing their directions.

D.Cellphone users can cause poor pedestrian traffic.

  • 22、Twelve prized camels have been disqualified from a beauty contest in Saudi Arabia after their owners tried to beautify their looks with Botox(肉毒杆菌素).

Thousands of camels are paraded at the King Abdulaziz Camel Festival to be judged on their shapely lips and humps. The festival, which also features camel racing and camel milk tasting, has combined prize money of $57 million.

This year’s event has been stuck in scandal after the 20 million Saudi riyals (里亚尔,货币单位) in prize money for each category tempted some owners to cheat.

The key features in camel beauty are considered to be delicate ears and a big nose. Judges are also looking for perfectly placed humps, muscular physiques and leathery mouths. But there are strict rules against the use of drugs in the lips, or shaved or clipped body parts.

Ali Al Mazrouei, the son of a top Emirati breeder, said Botox was used for the lips, the nose and even the jaw. “It makes the head more inflated, so when the camel comes, it’s like ‘Oh look at how big that head is. It has big lips, a big nose’,” he said.

In the lead up to the festival, Saudi media reported that a vet had been caught giving camels plastic surgery including Botox injections and reducing the size of their ears.

Chief judge Fawzan Al-Madi said the camel was “a symbol of Saudi Arabia”. “We used to preserve it out of necessity; now we preserve it as a pastime,” he said. The camel beauty contest was first held in 2000 and last year was relocated from a remote desert area to a permanent venue north of the capital, Riyadh.

【1】Why did some people cheat in the camel beauty contest?

A.They wanted to get the big prize.

B.They intended to show off their camels.

C.They were proud of their camels’ humps.

D.They expected their camels to win in racing.

【2】What is focused in the fourth paragraph?

    A.The goal of the contest.

    B.The rules for the judges.

    C.The standards of judgement.

    D.The kinds of different camels.

【3】Which of the following isn’t considered a feature of camel beauty?

    A.Big lips.

    B.Big ears.

    C.Big heads.

    D.Big noses.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Arabians find it tiring to raise camels.

B.People in Saudi Arabia depend on camels to live.

C.Saudi government takes the camel festival seriously.

D.Camels were raised for fun in the past in Saudi Arabia.

  • 23、A computer programme can identify breast cancer from routine scans with greater accuracy than human experts, some researchers said. They hoped what they developed could prove a breakthrough in the fight against the global killer.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, with more than 2 million new diagnoses last year alone. Regular screening is vital in detecting the earliest signs of the disease in patients who show no obvious symptoms.

In Britain, women over 50 are advised to get an examination of a breast every three years, the results of which are analyzed by two independent experts. But interpreting the scans leaves room for error, and a small percentage of all mammograms(乳房X光检查) either return a false positive—misdiagnosing a healthy patient as having cancer—or false negative—missing the disease as it spreads.

Now researchers at Google Health have trained an artificial intelligence model to detect cancer in breast scans from thousands of women in Britain and the United States. The images had already been reviewed by doctors in real life but unlike in a clinical setting, the machine had no patient history to inform its diagnoses. The team found that their AI model could predict breast cancer from the scans with a similar accuracy level to expert radiographers.

Further, the AI showed a reduction in the proportion of cases where cancer was incorrectly identified—5.7 percent in the US and 1.2 percent in Britain, respectively. It also reduced the percentage of missed diagnoses by 9.4 percent among US patients and by 2.7 percent in Britain.

“The earlier you identify a breast cancer, the better it is for the patient,” Dominic King, UK lead at Google Health, told AFP. “We think about this technology in a way that supports and enables an expert, or a patient ultimately, to get the best outcome from whatever diagnostics they’ve had.”

    【1】What’s the text mainly about?

A.Regular screening. is important for women who are over 50.

B.AI is more powerful than experts in diagnosing breast cancer.

C.Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women.

D.The earlier you identify a breast cancer the better the result is.

【2】What is of great importance in discovering breast cancer at an early stage?

    A.Daily scanning.

    B.Human experts.

    C.Regular screening.

    D.A computer program.

【3】What can we infer about breast cancer from the third paragraph?

A.It may be connected with age.

B.It can be cured in most cases.

C.The patients tend to be negative.

    D.It is frequently misdiagnosed.

【4】What’s Dominic King’s attitude toward the new technology?

    A.Skeptical.

    B.Favorable.

    C.Cautious.

    D.Indifferent.

  • 24、Improving your memory is easier than it sounds. Some people think our memory is static and unchanging.【1】

    Focus on it

Many people get caught in multitasking.【2】. Focusing on it is very important because our brains, unlike computers, can’t really think of many things in parallel. Therefore, if you need to memorize something, quit multitasking.

Smell, touch, taste, hear and see it

【3】Need to remember the name of someone you met for the first time? It may help to look into their eyes when you repeat their names and offer handshakes. By doing so, you have engaged four out of five senses.

    Make associations

When we learn, we often forget to try and make connections until later on. However, research has shown that memory can be stronger when you make the connection. For instance, think about how two things are related and the memory for both will be enhanced.【4】.

    【5】

People often could be caught up in thinking there is a“one size” that fits all learning style for memorizing new material. That’s simply not the case. Some people like to write things down when they are learning something new. Others may benefit more from recording what they are hearing and going back to take more detailed notes.

As we age, our memory sometimes seem to get worse. But it doesn’t have to. By following these tips, you can have your memory sharp at any age and improve it anytime.

A.Find “one size” that fits all of us

B.Learn it the way that works for you

C.They often fail to pay attention to the task at hand

D.They often try to finish many tasks at the same time

E.The more senses you employ, the stronger memory it becomes

F.Connect new information to existing information or experiences in your mind

G.However, you can enhance your memory by practicing a few memory-building exercises
