21、 It’s common knowledge that the woman in Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous painting seems to look back at viewers, following them with her eyes no matter where they are in the room. But this common knowledge turns out wrong.
A new study finds that the woman in the painting is actually looking out at an angle of 15.4° off to the viewer’s right — well outside the range that people normally believe when they think someone is looking right at them. In other words, said the study author, Horstmann, “She’s not looking at you.”
This is ironic (讽刺), because the entire phenomenon of a person’s gaze (凝视) in a photograph or painting seeming to follow the viewer is called the “Mona Lisa effect”, which is absolutely real. If a person is illustrated or photographed looking straight ahead, even people viewing the portrait from an angle will feel they are being looked at. As long as the angle of the person’s gaze is no more than about 5 degrees off to either side, the Mona Lisa effect occurs.
Horstmann and his co-author were studying this effect for its application in the creation of artificial-intelligence avatars (虚拟头像) when Horstmann took a long look at the “Mona Lisa” and realized she wasn’t looking at him.
To make sure it wasn’t just him, the researchers gathered 24 people to view images of the “Mona Lisa” on a computer screen. They set a ruler between the viewer and the screen and asked the participants to note which number on the ruler intersected (相交) Mona Lisa’s gaze. To calculate the angle of Mona Lisa’s gaze as she looked at the viewer, they moved the ruler farther from or closer to the screen during the study. Consistently, the researchers found, participants judged that the woman in the “Mona Lisa” portrait was not looking straight at them, but slightly off to their right.
So why do people repeat the belief that her eyes seem to follow the viewer? Horstmann isn’t sure. It’s possible, he said, that people have the desire to be looked at, so they think the woman is looking straight at them. Or maybe the people who first coined the term “Mona Lisa effect” just thought it was a cool name.
【1】It is generally believed that the woman in the painting “Mona Lisa” ________.
A.attracts the viewers to look back
B.seems mysterious because of her eyes
C.fixes her eyes on the back of the viewers
D.looks at observers wherever they stand
【2】What did the new study find?
A.The Mona Lisa effect does not really exist.
B.The mystery of the woman’s smile in the painting.
C.The angle of the gaze in Mona Lisa effect.
D.Mona Lisa effect does not occur with Mona Lisa.
【3】The experiment involving 24 people was conducted to ________.
A.confirm Horstmann’s belief
B.create artificial-intelligence avatars
C.calculate the angle of Mona Lisa’s gaze
D.show how the Mona Lisa effect can be applied
【4】What can we learn from the passage?
A.Horstmann thinks it cool to coin the term “Mona Lisa effect”.
B.The Mona Lisa effect contributes to the creation of artificial intelligence.
C.Feeling being gazed at by Mona Lisa may be caused by the desire for attention.
D.The position of the ruler in the experiment will influence the viewers’ judgement.
22、The most common forms of live stream marketing
Online Marketplaces
Online marketplaces like Taobao and Jingdong allow users to buy and sell products without ever leaving their homes. But the addition of live video streaming is proving vital to keep buyers interested. Why? By adding live streaming to the platform, these marketplaces can deliver the closest possible experience to “being there” for online buyers. Real-time interactivity offers the urgency of a real marketplace, urging immediate action and improving community participation.
Live Auctions (拍卖)
Live streaming opens up the auction items to those unable to physically attend, reaches participants with varying interests and ensures that each item sells at its proper valuation. Online auctions are big business, and real-time video delivery is critical. Whether auctioning off pets or fine art, any delay in a live stream could prevent bids (出价) from being recorded properly. Several milliseconds can translate to billions of dollars.
Influencer Streaming
Today’s celebrities aren’t necessarily on the big screen. An increasing number of stars rise to fame via social media each day. With a large number of faithful fans, influencers can use their personal brand and the power of live streaming to promote their favorite products in an interactive way. Influencer streaming originated on social media, but has now become commonplace across e-business sites as well.
Live Events
Newsworthy events, such as product launches and limited edition drops, increase the popularity of live stream marketing. Today, shoppable mobile streaming allows fans to purchase items in real time from the catwalks (T型走秀台) of Louis Vuitton and Victoria’s Secret.
【1】How does live video streaming affect online marketplaces?
A.It makes goods more popular.
B.It keeps shop owners interested.
C.It offers a real experience of offline shopping.
D.It makes online shopping more like offline shopping.
【2】What can we know about online auctions?
A.They bring convenience for people physically attending.
B.They make sure that every item can finally be sold online.
C.They make it necessary to have high speed Internet access.
D.They provide opportunities of making great fortune overnight.
【3】Which works as the easiest way for Internet celebrities getting into e-business?
A.Online Marketplaces.
B.Influencer Streaming.
C.Live Auctions.
D.Live Events.
23、 My mother didn't set out to be a civil rights activist. In fact, she had no intention of becoming a pioneer of any sort. But because of the kind of person she was, and the times she lived through, she turned out to be both. She gave a whole group of black Alabama girls opportunities they otherwise wouldn't have had, and became a role model for all of us.
In 1941 she bought an old Victorian house to operate as a preschool. The huge, sunny rooms and breezy porches also served as a meeting place for my mother's first Girl Scout troop.
Though this may seem a small thing now, at the time it was a watershed (分水岭) event. Racism was a fact of life in the 1940s, and African American girls were barred from joining white troops. My mother, who was only five feet tall but could beat you on a fast﹣paced hike, decided it was time for a change. Her troop was the first for African Americans in Alabama. When Mama saw a need, she filled it.
In 1950, the Girl Scouts sent a group of women﹣all of them white﹣from headquarters in New York to help my mother with an overnight training camp. The women met in a wilderness area outside Birmingham where, unknown to them, the Ku Klux Klan(3 K党) was active. It never occurred to the women, black and white, that they were violating the rules of segregation (种族隔离) by camping together. That night, my mother awoke to the sound of men's voices. She stole out of her tent and saw them, dressed in their horrible uniforms. They offered what must have been a terrifying warning: Be gone by sunrise.
She never shared this story with me; people protected their children from some of the uglier sides of racism. But I over﹣heard my parents talking about it later that night and I realized there was something remarkable about Mama. I felt an obligation to give back, to seek solutions and create opportunities as she did.
"It's not something you choose to do; it's just something you do," she would say. And what I've found is this: In giving to others, you get as much as you give.
【1】What made the author's mother an advocate for civil rights?
A.Her passion and educational background.
B.Her race and financial condition.
C.Her personality and social background.
D.Her occupation and religious belief.
【2】Why does the author mention her mother's height in the third paragraph?
A.To indicate her deeply﹣rooted sympathy for her mother.
B.To emphasize her mother's surprising strength.
C.To illustrate what a role model should look like.
D.To show her mother differs from average black women.
【3】What does the author think of her mother's meeting with the Ku Klux Klan?
A.It proves to be dangerous and unworthy.
B.It reveals the danger of racism.
C.It violates the rules of segregation.
D.It inspires her to be brave and caring.
24、How can we keep up with the pace of change today? For Bradley Staats, the answer is easy: we all need to keep learning.
“I came to appreciate that it was the story of learning. That’s what dragged me back to learn. I’d been in investment banking, I thought I had the knowledge to do what needed to be done, but really struggled over time,” he recalls. “Why do we get in our own way?”
Now Professor at the University of North Carolina, Staats has published his conclusions in a new book, “Never Stop Learning”. In it, he thinks highly of the virtues of being a “dynamic(积极的) learner”.
Become a Learning Dynamo
“Think of them as the four Fs,” he says. “That you’re focused, you’re fast, you’re frequent and you’re flexible.” Collectively, these four elements make it easier for us to learn new skills and ways of working.
The Importance of Failure
Staats presents some basic elements to achieving this ideal. The first of these involves another F: failure. “If you talk to people about how important failure is to learning, you’ll get the head nodding. But we tend to have a fear of failure, so bad overpowers good.”
Learning to Ask Questions
“When we ask a question, it shows that we don’t know something, and that people will actually think less of us. What’s interesting is that the research suggests it’s just the opposite. It lets them be an expert and share their perspective with us,” he points out.
Learning a Falsification Mindset
Staats advises us “to have strong opinions, weakly held”, which helps to have what he calls “a falsification mindset”. “A good scientist usually has a hypothesis(假设) first and then tries to falsify it,” he says. For example, you want to set up your operation in India. So you not only want to think about why that’s a good idea, but spend a lot of time asking questions why that might be a bad idea. Why might I be wrong?
【1】How was Bradley Staats in investment banking?
A.Quite relaxed.
B.Rather hard.
C.Fairly, pleased.
D.Rarely hopeful.
【2】What effect would “the four Fs” have on us?
A.Disturbing.
B.Challenging.
C.Inspiring.
D.Critical.
【3】In which aspect do we benefit from learning to ask questions?
A.Building our confidence.
B.Showing our wisdom.
C.Gaining our experience.
D.Promoting our understanding.
【4】What makes “a falsification mindset” received by scientists?
A.That they can benefit from the reflective practice.
B.That a failure rate is easy to measure.
C.That they can eventually conclude a truth.
D.That active mindsets surely mean great success.
