二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Joshua Plotnik and his colleagues carried out the tests on six 12-45-year-old Asian elephants living in the grounds of a hotel in northern Thailand. The buckets containing the seeds were not clear enough to see through and had a lid with small holes to let the smell out. In experiments, the elephants chose the greater quantity of seeds in each pair, regardless of the quantity of seeds presented. The accuracy of the prediction was better when the difference between each pair increased.

This is thought to be the first time that an animal is able to use its sense of smell to make a simple calculation of whether one of two quantities is more or less than another-the most basic form of math.

Many animal species have shown an ability to tell apart between more and less when presented with different amounts of food. But they have used vision to discriminate. Dogs have been unable to show they can perform the same trick in tests of their abilities to smell.

For an elephant this ability could be very important. Elephants often travel long distances to find better-quality food and water, which can differ according to seasonal availability, changes to their environment, and a risk they could be attacked by humans. The best performers were able to get it right more than 80 per cent of the time.

The scientists suggest that male elephants are better at the task because they need to eat more food, making it more important that their sense of smell is keener. Males also have to sniff out females in heat over long distances in order to reproduce.

They say that while elephants do use vision, particularly in close contexts where they react to each other’s body language, they use it mainly to match their more powerful senses-hearing, smell and touch.

That elephants have a powerful sense of smell is perhaps unsurprising. They have more genes related to smell than any other animal: 2,000 compared to around 800 for a dog.

1What special ability do elephants have?

A.Use their trunks to find different smells.

B.Distinguish between more and less food.

C.Smell the differences of food quality.

D.Per form the basic math calculation.

2What does the underlined word “discriminate” mean?

    A.Choose. B.Indicate.

    C.Measure. D.Distinguish.

3Why do elephants often travel long distances?

A.To find where the better food is.

B.To find where humans wait to attack them.

C.To find where the environment has changed.

D.To find where they can adapt to the climate.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Elephants can do simple math puzzles

B.Elephants can “count” with their trunks

C.Elephants can smell the quality of food

D.Elephants can use vision to communicate

  • 22、Recently, the harrowing farewell message appeared on the Internet, just three short sentences. “We are sure the army is capturing us now. We will see each other another day dear world. Bye.” It was signed “Fatemah”, the mother of Bana, a 7-year-old Syrian girl who got more than 200,000 Twitter followers as she and her family have documented their struggle to survive in war-ravaged Aleppo. And then, Bana’s Twitter account was abruptly deleted.

More than seventy years after a Dutch teenager penned the diary recording her family’s life hiding from the Nazis, Bana has become the Anne Frank of the Syrian civil war.

So when Bana’s online presence disappeared, her followers tweeted anxiously under the hashtag WherelsBana. Was this the end of her story? There was a sense of urgency and helplessness. Then, next afternoon, the account suddenly reappeared. Fatemah tweeted a bad message, “Under attack. Nowhere to go, every minute feels like death. Pray for us.” They were alive; their story continued.

It wasn’t the first time that the family had tweeted from the edge of death.

Several days later, another message arrived from Aleppo, more hopeful this time. Bana tweeted, “I am getting better without medicine with too much bombing. I miss you.” Then hours passed, and Bana’s account was silent as her followers tweeted prayers. The world watched on screens, waiting for her name to reappear.

  • 23、Children are more creative when they learn in natural surroundings, according to new research from Curtin University. Primary school students in Australia and England were put to the test to see whether writing poetry in a natural outdoor setting produced more creative outcomes than writing in a classroom, and the answer was yes.

Dr Paul Gardner and Sonja Kuzich from Curtin’s School of Education ran comparative trials with 10-year-old students in both countries and the results, recently published in the Cambridge Journal of Education, gave a big thumbs-up to the positive influence of natural settings. “We found that students who had direct contact with nature by immersing (沉浸) themselves in a bush or forest setting were much more descriptive and vivid in the language they used than the classroom-based writers who ‘imagined’ being in nature through photos,” Dr Gardner said.

In total, 97 students took part in the study, split across four classrooms, including two based at an English primary school and two from a primary school in Western Australia. In each country one class visited a natural bush or forest before writing a poem based on what they saw, smelt and felt. The other class viewed a pile of images of the same bush or forest setting.

Ms Kuzich said the difference in creative language used between the classes was obvious with twice as many UK forest students using figurative (比喻的) language compared with their class-based counterparts. In Australia that figure rose to more than four times when comparing the poetry of the bush-based students with those who remained at school.

The researchers say further studies of larger groups are now recommended to gain greater understanding of the influence of natural spaces and “green learning” in schools. Future research may also be needed to examine if the green learning can be translated into other learning themes or context to see if there is a flow on effect in different environments.

【1】Why were the students placed outdoors in nature?

    A.To get more outdoor exercise.

    B.To experience nature in depth.

C.To understand poems about nature better.

D.To prove nature’s effect on creativity.

【2】What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

A.The specific steps of the experiment.

    B.New findings about students’ writing.

C.The steps of training the children.

D.The purpose of performing the test.

【3】What can we infer about the result of the study?

A.Students indoors are not good at poetry.

B.Students in Australia prefer to study poetry.

C.Students are more creative in a natural environment.

D.Students in the UK and Australia have different writing skill preferences.

【4】What does the last paragraph imply?

A.Green learning is becoming a trend.

B.Further studies are to be carried out.

C.Green learning has been applied in school.

D.Future research is of little significance.

  • 24、Scientists in Israel have taught goldfish an unusual way to reach a target — by driving a small robotic car on dry land.

Six goldfish, regardless of their weight and size, took part in the experiment and were taught to drive in 30-minute sessions, conducted three times a week, every two days. The experiment was led by researchers at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. They wanted to see if goldfish’s ability to navigate depends on their natural environment, or if they could navigate even under very unusual conditions.

To test the goldfish, the researchers created a special robotic car that could drive forward, backward, and from side to side. The scientists called the car a Fish Operated Vehicle (FOV).

Goldfish was placed inside a water tank on the FOV. Using a special system, the car tracked where the goldfish was and what direction it was swimming in. The FOV would then automatically move in the same direction. To prevent the goldfish from getting stuck in barriers such as walls, researchers equipped the car with lidar. The researchers tested them by placing the car in a small room with a pink target on one side — that was where the fish were supposed to arrive. The fish were rewarded with food when achieving the task.

The fish did indeed learn to drive the FOV, becoming more skillful in its operation overtime both in terms of achieving tasks and in the time taken to complete that task. The researchers wanted to check that the fish weren’t just memorizing a set of movements to earn a reward, so they repeated some tests with a new starting position or added other targets that were a different color. They found the goldfish were able to deal with those changes.

Though the experiment showed that the fish were able to navigate to a target, it’s not likely that the fish knew they were controlling a car. The researchers say that in the future it may be possible to change the FOV to test these ideas.

【1】What did the researchers do before testing the goldfish?

    A.They fed them.

    B.They numbered them.

    C.They trained them.

    D.They weighed them.

【2】How did the goldfish get their reward in the experiment?

A.By making the FOV move forward.

B.By avoiding the car being stuck.

    C.By mixing the target’s colors.

D.By having the car reach the target.

【3】What did the researchers discover about the goldfish?

A.They were born with the ability to remember.

B.They could recognize the color’s changes.

C.They were curious about new environments.

    D.They could understand simple words.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Goldfish Learn to Drive on Land

    B.Scientists Teach Fish Navigation Skills

C.Goldfish Know How to control the FOV

    D.Scientists Help Goldfish Find Destinations

What They Found Inside an Old Sofa Bought for $20 Was Life-Changing

In 2021, SUNY students Reese Werkhoven, Lara Russ, and Cally Guasti were living together in a small apartment. They decided to furnish their apartment.

The three had gone to a Salvation Army store to buy a sofa, and were forced to settle for an old, rather smelly specimen that none of them really liked, but was the only one that was affordable and would fit in their living room. That day, as they were testing out their new purchase, they noticed that something was making a crinkling noise inside the cushions (垫子). Upon further investigation, they discovered a few bubble-wrapped envelopes inside the sofa.

When they opened the envelopes, they were in shock. A large amount of cash was inside. As they continued to pick apart the piece of furniture, they discovered more and more money. Guasti said, “Just when we thought we pulled out the last envelope, we’d find another $1,000 a few minutes later.”

After some time, the three roommates had unearthed a good $40,000 in cash. The fantasies of what they could do with all this money started flowing immediately.

However, they were quickly brought back to reality when they saw that there was a woman’s name on one of the envelopes. That was when the moral dilemma started — what to do? Keep the money for themselves, or try to find the owner?

The three consulted their parents for advice, and the next day, Werkhoven got a call from his mom. She had tracked down the mystery woman and found a phone number.
