二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Many of the New World supermarkets in New Zealand are letting their fruits and vegetables go packaging-free. In an innovative project pioneered by the New World supermarket located at Bishopdale in Christchurch, this change has led to an amazing increase in sales according to The New Zealand Herald. "We monitor them year on year and after we introduced the idea, we noticed sales of spring onions, for example, had increased by 300 percent," Bishopdale’s owner Nigel Bond told NZ Herald. "There may have been other factors at play, but we noticed similar increases in other vegetables." Bond explained, "When we first set up the new shelving, our customers were blown away. It reminded me of when I was a kid going to the fruiterer with my Dad you could smell the fresh oranges and spring onions. By wrapping products in plastic, we sanitize and keep people away from this experience, it was a huge regret for us."

This new project is part of the movement to do away with all single-use plastic packaging. There are actually government regulations that went into effect on July 1, 2019 for a phase out(强制逐步淘汰) of plastic bags by all retailers. Plastics take up as much as 20 percent of New Zealand's landfill space to 252,000 tons per year.

The idea for the unwrapped produce came from Bond. He went on a study tour in the US and was impressed by the sales at Whole Foods. Then he spoke to growers and suppliers who were more than happy to look at different ways to provide produce without the plastic packaging.

Now, most of the produce is plastic-free but some items - including grapes and some tomatoes - still come wrapped in plastic. Nine New World supermarkets in the South Island have followed the Bishop dales stores example. And New World is testing another new way to BYO (=bring your own) containers for the meat and seafood departments. All of this is a part of the supermarket chain commitment to sustainable practices.

【1】What's the result of making vegetables go packaging-free?

A.An innovative project was carried out.

    B.More vegetables have been sold.

    C.Nigel Bond monitored sales stricter.

D.Other factors were found to play the role.

【2】Which of the following is the content of regulations going into effect in 2019?

A.Not using all single-use plastic packaging.

    B.Limiting the development of retailers.

    C.Stopping using plastic bags gradually.

D.Building more New Zealand's landfill space.

【3】What made Bond have the idea for the unwrapped produce?

    A.Whole Foods’ sales.

    B.His study in the college.

    C.His impression from work.

    D.Growers and suppliers' requirements.

【4】What can be the suitable title for the text?

    A.New World's Fruits and Vegetables Going Packaging-Free.

B.New Zealand's Supermarkets Calling for Environmental protection.

C.New Zealand's Contribution to Reducing the Use of Plastics.

D.New World's Supermarkets' New Ways to Promote Sales.

  • 22、   Buyer beware: There’s a reason why online ticket sellers hit you with last-second fees. A massive experiment by Berkeley professsor Tadelis with the online ticket marketplace StubHub concluded that “drip pricing”, where additional fees are only disclosed when customers are ready to confirm their purchases, resulted in people spending more. “Websites incorporating ‘hidden fees’ are making more money than they would if they chose to honestly display all fees upfront,” Tadelis said.

The study set out to find out how “drip pricing” affects both the quantity and types of ticket purchases through a large-scale, real-world randomized experiment. For the experiment, StubHub randomly assigned half of all the users to an experimental hidden-fee structure where buyers saw only the ticket list price as they shopped, and extra fees were only displayed on the checkout page, which generally amounted to 15% of the ticket price including shipping. The other half of StubHub users continued to see the all-inclusive prices. This setup allowed Tadelis and his colleagues to compare the choices made by the two groups, such as purchases and clicks towards checkout.

Overall, users who weren’t shown the additional fees upfront spent about 21% more on tickets and were 14% more likely to complete a purchase compared with those who saw all-inclusive prices from the start. Among all those who made purchases, customers in the hidden-fee group bought tickets that were about 5% more expensive than those in the upfront fee group, buying more tickets for seats located closer to the field or the event stage.

The findings raise questions for whether the misinformed consumers have a right to full price disclosure upfront. Professor Tadelis noted that some governments have considered regulating this behavior to increase transparency—Canada, for example, has banned the use of drip pricing for ticket sales. “I can’t think of a good reason to allow this practice in any country as the harm to consumers is clear from our study,” Tadelis said.

【1】Online ticket sellers reveal the extra fees only at the last moment to________.

    A.offer cheaper tickets

    B.increase the selling transparency

    C.make more profits

D.allow buyers more time to consider

【2】What can we learn about the experiment from Paragraph 2?

A.Participants were divided into halfs at their will.

B.All users could see the additional fees in advance.

C.Shipping fees amount to 15% of the ticket price.

D.Researchers compared the two groups’ choices.

【3】What do we know about “dripping price”?

A.It made 14% more customers buy tickets.

B.It helped to increase ticket profits by 5%.

C.It has been regulated by the governments.

D.It caused customers to spend more money.

【4】What is professor Tadelis’ attitude towards “drip pricing”?

A.It is practical and deserves promoting.

B.It is harmful and should be banned.

C.It is costly but can be accepted.

D.It is beneficial but needs regulating.

  • 23、A four-year-old boy discovers that compassion (同情) for the 1ess fortunate can produce amazing results. Our hero’ s origin story started this past February. Austin and his father, TJ Perine, went to the Firehouse Ministries, a local shelter that provides housing, food, and other services for homeless men. As they drove by the redbrick building, they saw a group of 25 homeless men standing on the street corner. “Dad, they look sad,” Austin said. “Can we take them some food and make them smile?”

That day, Austin used his allowance to buy each man a Burger King sandwich and handed the food out himself. Seeing what their presence meant to the men at the ministry, Austin and TJ returned the next week. Austin again dipped into his piggy bank to buy sandwiches, which he banded out along with his new catchphrase, “Don’t forget to show love?”

After he returned every week for five weeks, word of Austin’s acts of kindness spread through social media and national news outlets. Burger King jumped aboard, agreeing to donate $1,000 a month for an entire year toward the cause. Soon, churches and shelters across the country began inviting Austin to come distribute food in other poverty-prone areas. Whereas before Austin and TJ could feed 25 to 50 people at a time, now, thanks to corporate and community support, they can feed 800 to 2,000 people at once.

Austin’s passion has now become his family’s calling. His mother Audrey established the Show Love Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting homelessness. She now serves as president, and TJ left his job to oversee public relations for the foundation full time. He’s in talks with the city of Birmingham to secure the redbrick building where it all started—Firehouse Ministries is moving- -as the site of their own shelter, which will offer medical and mental care as preventive steps against homelessness.

As for Austin, he continues to give out food, smiles, and his inspirational message of love. “It makes me feel like I’m saving the day.”

【1】What did Austin do with his pocket money?

    A.Travel across the country.

B.Build a shelter for the poor.

C.Improve the life of his family.

D.Buy some food for the homeless.

【2】Why did the author mention Burger King in paragraph 3?

A.To make an advertisement for it.

B.To show the effect of Austin’s act.

C.To praise its kindness and support.

D.To seek its help for the less fortunate.

【3】What can we learn about the Show Love Foundation?

    A.It is highly profitable.

B.It was set up by Austin.

    C.It will provide health care.

    D.It’s funded by the government.

【4】Which word can best describe Austin and his parents?

    A.Warm-hearted.

    B.Peace-loving.

    C.Hard-working.

    D.Quick-minded.

  • 24、Bissel is a small village of the West Sahara. It lies next to a l.5-square-kilometer oasis (绿洲), from where three days and nights are generally required to go out of the desert. However, before Ken Levin discovered it in 1926, none of the Bissel villagers had ever walked out of the desert. Reportedly, they were not unwilling to leave this barren land. Many had previously tried but failed, always somehow finding themselves back at the oasis after several days of trying to walk out.

When interviewed by Ken Levin, an expert at the British Royal College of Sciences, the villagers explained that no matter which direction they walked it always brought them back to the village.

Why couldn’t the Bissel villagers walk out of the desert? Levin was very puzzled. He had, by himself, managed to walk north from the village and reach the nearest town in three and a half days. He decided to carry out an experiment to solve the mystery. He and a Bissel villager called Argutel, would walk out of the desert together. They prepared enough water for a half-a-month journey and two camels. But this time Ken Levin didn’t bring his compass. Levin would follow Argutel.

Ten days later, they had walked for about 500 miles but were still in the desert. On the 11th morning, an oasis came into their view. They were back at Bissel. Levin now understood why the Bissel people couldn’t escape the desert. They had no knowledge of the North Star, which had for centuries provided sailors and other travelers with a point of direction. In the desert, if a person goes forward relying only on their senses, they will not be able to travel in a straight line. Rather they will travel in a very large circle and eventually track back to where they began. Levin explained to Argutel the function of the North Star and said, “As long as you rest in the daytime and walk towards the brightest star at night, you would be able to walk out of the desert.” Argutel did as he was told. Three days later, he came to the edge of the desert.

Now in the West Sahara, Bissel has become a bright pearl, where tens of thousands of tourists come every year. Argutel’s bronze statue stands in the center of the town. On its base are the words: ________.

【1】Villagers in Bissel had never walked beyond the desert because ________.

A.they had no method to find their way out

【2】Ken Levin asked Argutel to walk to the north in order to ________.

A.see how far away Bissel was to the edge of the desert

B.prove that people could walk out of the desert

C.tell people not to walk in circles

D.show Argutel was a great person

【3】According to the passage, Ken Levin ________.

A.knew Argutel before he came to the village

B.came to Bissel to do experiments on behalf of his college

C.became the first man to walk out of the desert from Bissel Village

D.taught Bissel villagers knowledge of the North Star when he first arrived

【4】Which of the following can most probably be found at the base of Argutel’s statue?

A.Two heads are better than one.

B.Where there is a will, there is a way.

C.A long journey starts with the first step.

D.A new life starts from the fixed direction.
