  • 21、I couldn’t be more excited to join Reader’s Digest as we celebrate our 100th anniversary. Since 1922, this magazine has shared stories about remarkable people across the country and the kind and heroic things they do for one another.

I grew up in a family of storytellers. My father, a police officer in our central Illinois town, came home every day with stories about the people in our community: funny anecdotes or dramatic stories that revealed the lives of the individuals in our town and what they went through every day.

My mother was a gifted storyteller and her job in the front office of our local middle school provided a lot of material. My sister and I heard about classmates who were caught skipping school or forced by the principal to admit their mischief on unpopular teacher. She would deliver the play-by-play to us, laughing about kids and the things they do. My sister and I learned how to find and tell our own stories in a way that the April 1960 issue held Mom and Dad’s attention and earned their laughs. I suspect those conversations pushed me toward journalism, a way of telling stories to an audience beyond the dinner table.

In this special anniversary issue, we look at some of the incredible stories from famous writers, politicians, everyday heroes, and average Americans that have filled the pages of Reader’s Digest for a century. We also talk about humor, health, and how to feel hopeful about the next century. Of course, there is too much for one issue, so be sure to visit us online at rd.com/100th for more.

Most of all, thank you for being a part of the first 100 years of Reader’s Digest. I look forward to hearing and sharing your stories for years to come.

  • 22、   Do you continue to be healthy in social isolation (隔离)? NASA is looking for people to spend 8 months locked in a Russian lab for a new experiment.

When humans go to the moon and travel to Mars, they will need to be prepared for long-term space travel and even longer stays on these far-off destinations. Currently, NASA’s Artemis program aims to land humans on the moon for the first time since NASA's Apollo 17 mission landed in 1972.

While the moon is the main goal of NASA’s Artemis program, the agency’s larger goal is to send people to Mars. But long term space travel and habitation (居住) won’t be easy. Such missions will present both physical and mental challenges as astronauts work to not only survive, but perform important scientific research in uniquely difficult environments.

In the upcoming NASA-Russia experiment, a group of people will live in a closed facility at Russia’s Institute for Biomedical Problems, which is in Moscow. This habitat facility was used in 2011 for a notable series of Russian mock (模拟的) Mars missions known as Mars500. During these missions, groups of people spent 520 and 105 days on two separate missions in the facility.

The facility, according to the statement, will have “environmental factors similar to those astronauts are expected to experience on future missions to Mars”. The group of people will spend 8 months living together in isolation and working on scientific research.

By living and working in this Mars-like environment, participants in this study will help NASA researchers understand the psychological and physiological (生理的) effects of isolation. These missions help researchers not only perform relevant science experiments but also see how people might get on under strange conditions for long periods of time.

So, if you’re finding that living in social isolation works for you, you might be particularly well-suited for living in a Mars-like environment and this could be for you. But first, you have to qualify. NASA is looking for “highly motivated” Americans between the age of 30-55, who must speak both Russian and English fluently and have a Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor o[ Medicine, or military officer training. Applicants with other related experience may also be considered. Those who are chosen to be a part of this group will be paid for their work.

【1】Which of the following succeeded in landing humans on the moon?

    A.Apollo 17 mission.

    B.Artemis program.

    C.Mars500.

    D.Institute for Biomedical Problems.

【2】What do we know about the new NASA Russia experiment?

A.It will send people to live on Mars for 8 months.

B.It needs experienced Americans without an age limit.

C.It will be carried out in a Mars-like environment in NASA.

D.It makes preparations for NASA’S human spaceflight program.

【3】Why does the author mention “Mars500” in the text?

A.To show the progress in space technology.

B.To explain why the facility has been chosen.

C.To indicate the new experiment will be successful.

D.To describe the life of astronauts in the mock Mars missions.

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Want to Have A Trip to Mars? Come!

    B.Aretmis -- NASA’S Latest Program

C.Competent in Isolation? NASA Wants You!

    D.NASA’s Human Space Travel Program

  • 23、   Our brain doesn't know how to be happy, or even content. It simply lacks the genetic instructions to carry out that task. It knows how to do a million other less important things, from writing a letter to maintaining our balance; from appreciating the music of Bach to smelling a rose, but if you ask the brain to be happy, it simply doesn't know how to respond.

This is because the genetic code is only concerned with survival and reproduction, which happiness does not necessarily have anything to do with, and therefore belongs in a different realm. Nature doesn't want us to always feel content and satisfied, let alone happy, as this would lower our guard against possible threats to our survival.

Happiness, as the Brazilian poet Vinicius de Moraes put it, is "like a feather flying in the air. It flies light, but not for very long." It is so elusive that it has also been compared to a butterfly, which "when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you," according to 19th﹣century American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. In any case, what is clear is that happiness is, at best, fleeting (飞逝的) and inconstant.

In this blog, we will look at the myth of happiness from many perspectives and, in the process, we will touch on topics such as happy personalities, the unhappy workings of the brain, evolution, dreams, and even fairy tales. I explore all these issues in detail in my book, which shares its title with this blog. Happiness is a crucial concept. We spend all of our lives pursuing it, so it deserves a very careful analysis.

We are determined by our biological design to experience mixed and messy emotions. But the silver lining is the knowledge that having difficult emotions doesn't represent a personal failure. The inevitable unhappiness that we all suffer from time to time is not a shortcoming that demands urgent repair. Far from it. This unhappiness is, in fact, what makes us human.

【1】Why does our brain lack the genetic instructions to be happy?

A.Because being happy is less important than appreciating and creating art.

B.Because happiness has little to do with the continuation of a species.

C.Because we tend to be more aware of the threats when we are unhappy.

D.Because feeling good isn't one of our concerns in living a life.

【2】What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 most probably mean?

    A.Difficult to achieve.

    B.Easy to expose.

    C.Unable to explain.

    D.Likely to remain.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.We should make happiness our top concern no matter what.

B.Negative emotions always require immediate attention.

C.Social failures are more likely to be troubled by negative feelings.

D.We should accept difficult emotions as a natural part of life.
