二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、My dearest son and daughter,

The story of New Jersey high school student Rachel Canning suing (起诉) her parents for child support and high school education inspired me to write you a little letter. Let me just put this out there: the only way I expect to see you in a court is as a lawyer or a judge.

There are two things about this case that seem to be disaster.

First, it’s natural for parents and children to argue. I can guarantee that we will disagree. One or both of you will, at some point, scream at the top of your lungs the various ways you hate me. And I won’t always like you, either. But I will always love you and do everything I can to keep your best interests as my focus, even when I’m so angry. We are family. That means we are as much a part of one another as the flesh, blood and bones in our body. And we all should think about it very deeply instead of breaking that bond.

Second, I’ll be honest, no matter how far apart we are on your life choices, your father and I will most certainly pay everything we can for your higher education. But that doesn’t mean you deserve it. To be clear, that is a privilege we happily extend (给予) to younot a right you are born with. And you will have to work hard to earn that privilege. Growing up is hard work.

If I do my job properly as your mother—and you do yours as my children—you would sooner get a job or two, and find a way to make your dreams come true than go to trial over what you think you have the right to.

    Love always,

    Mom

【1】The mother writes this letter because she wants her children to ______.

    A. be prepared for education

    B. learn a lesson from the case

    C. take up the legal profession

    D. remember Rachel Canning

2When in disagreement, the mother expects her children not to ______.

    A. guarantee anything

    B. scream out their anger

    C. break the family bond

    D. forget their best interests

3The mother thinks of parents’ paying for their children’s higher education as ______.

    A. a way in which children realize their dreams

    B. a test of whether parents love their children

    C. a privilege that children should earn

    D. a right that parents are born with

  • 22、With Bookswap, you can give away the books you no longer need and exchange them for new ones that you want to read. The system was created by a team of book-lovers who want to spread the joy of reading and make a positive change in the world.

    Ordering Books

When you order a book through Bookswap, you will use one ordering point from your account. When someone orders a book from you and you post it to them, one ordering point is added to your account.

    Price List

If you have ordering points, you only pay a small swapping fee of $1.2 per ordered book and the delivery cost is $2.6.

If you don't have any ordering points, the cost of an ordering point is added to your cart (购物车). The cost of an ordering point is$3.

    Posting Books

If someone orders several books within the same order, then they should be sent together. If the parcel goes over the set weight/size limit, Hermes Delivery can charge a bit extra for the delivery, but this is covered by us and should affect neither sender nor receiver of the book(s).

    Cancelling Orders

Cancelling your order is allowable if the order has not been posted. Used ordering points are returned almost immediately to your Bookswap account, and monetary refunds (退款) can take up to 5-10 business days to appear back in your bank account. You can then choose whether to give reasons for cancelling the order according to your own wishes.

【1】How much should you pay if you requested two books without any ordering points?

    A.$11

    B.$8

    C.$3.8

    D.$13.6

【2】What if a Bookswap user's parcel is overweight or oversized?

A.The books will be delivered separately.

B.The sender will get more ordering points.

C.The receiver will shoulder the delivery cost.

D.The Bookswap will cover the extra fee.

【3】What do we know about cancelations?

    A.Swapping fees aren't returned immediately.

B.The used ordering points can't be returned

    C.Reasons for cancellation are required.

D.The posted order can be cancelled.

  • 23、   Essentially, everyone has two ages: a chronological(按时间计算的) age, how old the calendar says you are, and a biological age, basically the age at which your body functions as it compares to average fitness or health levels.

“Chronological age isn’t how old we really are. It’s merely a number,” said Professor David Sinclair at Harvard University. “It is biological age that determines our health and ultimately our lifespan(寿命). We all age biologically at different rates according to our genes, what we eat, how much we exercise, and what environment we live in. Biological age is the number of candles we really should be blowing out. In the future, with advances in our ability to control biological age, we may have even fewer candles on our birthday cake than the previous one.

To calculate biological age, Professor Levine at Yale University identified nine bio-markers that seemed to be the most influential on lifespan by a simple blood test. The numbers of those markers, such as blood sugar and immune measures, can be put into the computer, and the algorithm (算法) does the rest.

Perhaps what’s most important here is that these measures can be changed. Doctors can take this information and help patients make changes to lifestyle, and hopefully take steps to improve their biological conditions. “I think the most exciting thing about this research is that these things aren’t set in stone,” Levine said. “People can be given the information earlier and take steps to improve their health before it’s too late.”

Levine even entered her own numbers into the algorithm. She was surprised by the results. “I always considered myself a very healthy person. I’m physically active; I eat what I consider a fairly healthy diet. But I did not find my results to be as good as I had hoped they would be. It was a wake-up call,” she said.

Levine is working with a group to provide access to the algorithm online so that anyone can calculate their biological age, identify potential risks and take steps to improve their own health in the long run. “No one wants to live an extremely long life with a lot of chronic diseases,” Levine said. “By delaying the development of mental and physical functioning problems, people can still be engaged in society in their senior years. That is the ideal we should be pursuing.”

    1Biological age depends on __________.

A.what the calendar says about our age

B.when we start to take outdoor exercise

C.whether we can adapt ourselves to the environment

D.how well our body works compared with our peers’

2What does the author mean by saying the underlined part in Paragraph 2?

A.We are chronologically older than last year.

B.We might be less happy than the previous year.

C.We don’t have to celebrate our birthday every year.

D.We may be biologically younger than the year before.

3What does the author want to tell us by Levine’s example in Paragraph 5?

A.It is necessary to change our diet regularly.

B.The test results may give us wrong information.

C.Waking up early in the morning is good for our fitness.

D.The algorithm can reveal our potential health problems.

4Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

    A.Bio-markers Can Make Us Younger

    B.Chronological Age and Biological Age

C.Old People can Still be Engaged in Society

D.Biological Age can Lag behind or Exceed Chronological Age

  • 24、The time between full wakefulness and being sound asleep may be packed with creative potential. In a new experiment, people who fell into a light sleep were better problem-solvers later.

Thomas Edison inspired the new study. It’s said that the famous inventor used to value the moments between wakefulness and sleep. Supposedly, he used to fall asleep in a chair holding two steel balls. As he nodded off, the balls fell into metal pans. The resulting noise woke him. Then, he could write down his inventive ideas before he fell into a deep sleep and forgot them.

Researchers tested Edison’s method of developing creativity with 103 healthy people. Volunteers came to the lab to solve a difficult number problem. They were asked to change a string of numbers into a shorter sequence (数列) following two simple rules. What the volunteers weren’t told was that there was an easy trick to do this task. The second number in the sequence would always be the correct final number, too. Once discovered, this trick greatly cut the solving time. After doing this task 60 times, the volunteers earned a 20-minute break in a quiet, dark room. Volunteers lay in chairs and held a version of the steel balls that Edison used as “alarm clocks”. The researchers told participants to close their eyes and rest or sleep if they desired. All the while, their brain waves were monitored.

After their rest, participants returned to their number problem. The researchers saw a big difference between the groups. People who had fallen into a shallow, early sleep were 2.7 times as likely to spot the hidden trick as people who had stayed awake. Shallow sleepers were 5.8 times as likely to spot the trick as people who reached the deeper stage.

More work is needed to prove the link between the shallow stage of sleep and creativity. But the results raise an interesting possibility. People may be able to learn to reach that stage of sleep.

【1】What was the function of the steel balls and metal pans for Thomas Edison?

A.To help him stay on guard during sleep.

B.To stop others from disturbing his sleep.

C.To make his brain work even during sleep.

D.To prevent him from falling sound asleep.

【2】What conclusion can be drawn about the experiment?

A.Its results are well worth wide promotion.

B.It proves researchers’ work is demanding.

C.Its findings still need to be further confirmed.

D.It will motivate more people to practice light sleep.

【3】What’s the best title for the text?

    A.Edison’s Method of Developing Creativity

B.Nodding off May Turn Your Creativity on

C.A Better Sleep Helps with Problem-Solving

D.Links Between Sleep Quality and Creativity

【4】Where does this text probably come from?
