二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Scientists can figure out a movie's emotional tone from the gasps(喘气)of its audience.

These gases could point the way to a subtle form of human communicationa new study suggests. “When you see a movieyou can hear the music and see the pictures. Howeveryou don't realize there are chemical signals in the air. And theytoocould be affecting you"says Williamswho led the study. As an atmospheric chemisthe studies the chemical makeup of the air around us.

Williams started out measuring the air in a soccer stadium. He noticed that levels of carbon dioxide and other gases changed wildly whenever the crowd cheered. That got him wondering--Could the gases people breathe out be influenced by emotions

To find outhe went to the movies.

Williams and his coworkers measured air samples collected over six weeks in two movie theaters. Overall9500 movie goers watched 16 films. They included a mix of comedyromanceaction and horror films. Among them were The Hunter GamesCatching FireCarrieand Walking with Dinosaurs. The researchers gave scenes from the movies such labels as“suspense”“ laughter"and“crying”. Then they looked for hundreds of chemicals in the air that showed up as people were watching particular movie scenes.

And certain scenes had distinct chemical“fingerprints”Scenes that had people laughing or on the edge of their seats were especially distinctive. During screenings of The Hunger Gameslevels of carbon dioxide and isoprene got to the highest at two suspenseful moments. Because isoprene is related to muscle movementthe researchers think tense movie moments likely led to its peak. Williams and his colleagues think the increase in carbon dioxide was due to the viewers' increased pulse and breathing rates.

Scientists need more data to make stronger links between human emotions and what's in their breath. But Williams can see potential practical uses. Companiesfor instancecould quickly measure the air during tests to see how people feel about new products. He pictures future studies recording other body variables(变数)as well. These might include heart rate and body temperaturefor instance. “It's something to find out. ”

1What chemicals in the air are important to Williams's recent research

    A.Those in the natural air.

    B.Those from the theaters.

    C.Those from audience's breath.

    D.Those from people's gasps.

2What was Williams's purpose of the research?

A.To know more about the makeup of the air.

B.To see whether people's emotion affects the air they breathe out.

C.To study how greatly the movies influence people's emotion.

D.To find out how the air changes in a crowded stadium.

3What do we know about the experiment?

A.Each participant watched about 16 films.

B.The movies were a mixture of comedy and romance.

C.The films were labeled with three main features.

D.The samples were taken in two theaters over six weeks.

4In which situation are people most emotional

    A.Horrible moments

    B.Romantic moments

    C.Suspenseful situations.

    D.Exciting situations

5What can we infer from the last paragraph

A.Williams thinks more measures should be taken for practical uses.

B.Human emotions are strongly related to the chemicals humans breathe out.

C.People's temperature will be measured when they're watching movies.

D.Companies will spend much money testing their new product.

  • 22、In 1939, seven-year-old Miriam Schreiber should have started first grade. Instead, she spent that year — and the following five — trying to survive. She was living in Poland when World War II broke out. “My entire life was ruined within minutes,” she says. “I was looking forward to starting school.” She never made it. And not having a degree has always been a thorn in her side.

Decades later, though, the now-89-year-old Holocaust survivor finally got something she had always longed for. Kapiloff Brander, director of community programs at Jewish Family Services, reached out to the New England Jewish Academy, a Jewish high school, to ask whether the school could help Mariam fulfill her wish. Richard Nabel, the principal of the school, brought a few senior students to Miriam’s home to hear her story before they came up with the idea of presenting her an honorary diploma at the school’s 2020 graduation ceremony.

Miriam suffered a lot in a slave labor camp in Siberia before she got liberated in 1946. She and her remaining family members went to a refugee camp in Germany, where she got married and had her first child at the age of 16. Having spent years in refugee camps in different countries, she finally immigrated to America in 1960. Getting a formal education was never an option for her but she learned seven languages over the years. “I educated myself,” she says. “I read books day and night. I still do.”

On August 16, during a socially distanced ceremony in the school gym, Miriam was presented with a high school diploma from the New England Jewish Academy. “There weren’t too many dry eyes among the 30 of us there,” says Nabel. Miriam’s family was especially moved. “I’m not sure she even realizes the importance of that moment to me,” says Bernie, her eldest son. “I am so proud of her.”

【1】What can be learned about Mariam from paragraph 1?

A.She regretted not being educated at school.

B.She started first grade at the age of seven.

C.She felt lucky to have survived World War II.

D.She spent five years in Poland during the war.

【2】How did Mariam get her long-cherished wish fulfilled?

A.She made it through her own efforts.

B.She turned to Kapiloff Brander for help.

C.The senior students themselves presented a diploma to her.

D.Richard Nabel learned about her story and decided to help.

【3】Which of the following best describes Mariam?

    A.Educated.

    B.Intelligent.

    C.Determined.

    D.Patient.

  • 23、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

The Gunpowder Plot was conspiracy (阴谋) to kill King James I, as well as the members of the House of Lords and Commons at the re-opening of Parliament. It was designed by a group of Catholics in protest against the anti-Catholic laws that were being introduced by the king.

Robert Catesby was the leader of the group. It was he and his cousin, Thomas Wintour, and two other friends, Thomas Percy and John Wright, who formed the center of the group. They were joined by nine more men; among them was Guy Fawkes, from the city of York in the north of England.

Fawkes found a store room directly under the House of Lords and rented it out under the false name of John Johnson. The conspirators stored thirty-six barrels of gunpowder there, and Fawkes, who was an explosives expert, was to light the fuses (引信) on 5th November 1605.

The plot failed because one of the conspirators, Francis Tresham, sent a letter to his relative, who was a member of the House of Lords. The letter warned him not to attend the opening ceremony of Parliament. The letter was passed on to the authorities, who took action.

Guy Fawkes was found in the cellar on the night of 4th November with the thirty-six barrels and a number of fuses. He was imprisoned and ill-treated, eventually giving away the names of the conspirators.

Soldiers of the king surrounded Holbeach House, in the Midlands, where they knew the conspirators to be hiding. In the fight that followed, four of them were shot dead, including Catesby and Percy, who were actually killed by the same bullet. The others were imprisoned and hanged along with Guy Fawkes on 31st January 1606.

These days, on 5th November, children all over Britain celebrate Guy Fawkes Night by building huge bonfires and lighting fireworks. It's a family tradition and an occasion to eat potatoes baked by the flames. There is always a 'guy' on top of the fire, a model of Guy Fawkes, dressed in the clothes of the 17th century.

  • 24、Russ Gremel, now 98 years old, decided it was time to donate $2 million to the Illinois Audubon Society, a charity to purchase nearly 400 acres of land for wildlife protection. Gremel was able to make this amazing donation because he purchased $1,000 worth of Walgreens stock seven decades ago whose value has grown recently.

“A single man with no kids, Gremel has lived in the same Chicago house for 95 years, and has always lived simply”, neighbor Patrick Falso told TODAY. Falso said he heard Gremel say many times the “money wasn’t mine to begin with” and that he always intended to give it away.

The Gremel Wildlife shelter was founded on June 4. Illinois Audubon Society president Jim Herkert said Gremel’s donation was extremely generous. “It’s allowing us to protect a really valuable and important possession and realize one of Gremel’s wishes that we could find a place where people could come out and experience nature the way he did as a kid,” Herkert told TODAY.

After doing all this, this past weekend, Gremel adopted an old Chihuahua(吉娃娃犬). Winnie the dog was picked up as a homeless dog several months ago. She suffered from a kind of cancer, which was treated—and all she needed was a loving home, which Colleen Collins, the founder of Perfect Pooches Adoption Agency, was determined to find.

Gremel had lost his own beloved Chihuahua earlier this year. When he reached out to Collins about Winnie, she felt this could be a good match. That feeling grew when she brought Winnie to his house for a meet and greet, and Winnie was introduced not only to Gremel but also some of his friends and neighbors. One had brought over a lot of fresh strawberries; all said they’d be there to help out in any way needed.

【1】Patrick Falso is mentioned in the text mainly to explain _________.

    A.how Gremel earned the money

B.what kind of person Gremel is

    C.why Gremel made the donation

    D.where Gremel has been living

【2】What can we learn about Russ Gremel from the text?

A.He raised many pet dogs in his life.

B.He bought Walgreens stock at age 28.

C.He adopted a young Chihuahua recently.

D.He volunteered in wildlife shelters regularly.

【3】What can we infer about Gremel’s neighbors from the text?

A.They live in harmony with animals.

B.They are impressed with dog Winnie.

C.They lead a healthy and wealthy life.

D.They are caring and kind to each other.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Early in 1999, our family had to drive several hundred miles to Billings, Montana, to visit a hospitalized family member. Between our travel, accommodation, and having given most of our available cash to help our relatives out with expenses, we had very little money with us when we left to return home. It was getting dark when we drove out of Billings.

At first, we didn’t notice that our headlights were dimming(变暗), and that was probably why we missed the exit for the interstate(州际公路) leading home. About 40 miles later, we began to see that nothing along the highway was familiar to us. In 35 more miles, we saw an exit to a town that wasn’t anywhere near where we were supposed to be.

With eight miles to the next exit, we began to realize the headlights were dangerously dim. The car began to make a series of short explosive sounds, which made us feel extremely worried. I had to turn off the lights to keep it running. At the foot of the exit slope, there was a small post office in front of us. The car stopped running completely as we pulled into the parking lot.

I soon determined that there was something wrong with the alternator (发电机). It was 7:00 in the evening and we were in Rosebud, Montana, which was a tiny town with no services. To make things worse, the heavy snow was falling. We needed to find our family a safe place to spend the cold night and find an alternator to fix the car the next morning. Hopelessly, we couldn’t see any other buildings around us, and the rest of the town was nearly a mile away. Even if we walked there, we knew that there was probably no hotel or parts store.
