二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Comparative thinking and behavior is quite typical among teenagers,  but it is the responsibility of the parent to set limits and hold firmly to them. Frequently, a parent will tell me in frustration about how their child has complained about not having the very best in fashion design like their friends, or the latest electronic gadgetry that all the other kids own.

Parents need to teach their children selfconfidence. Those who are selfconfident resist the urge to compare themselves to other people, and do not overestimate others' experience while diminishing their own. But some people may have a mantra signified by the slogan, if only. “If only I had the money of my brother; if only I was smart like my classmates; if only I was as goodlooking as my friends.”

Comparing oneself with others is a trap. People who compare themselves with other individuals tend to feel that they are not good enough.  They tend to perseverate(表现执拗)about their shortcomings. Even if they try their best,it is not good enough because they can always find someone who performs at a higher level. When people compare, they generally focus on their negative traits. They ignore all that is going right in their life. They also tend to minimize their success and dismiss positive gestures and compliments.

Those who are confident listen to their own inner voice. They are not influenced by other people's view of events. They are not overly impressed by others' success, money, health, and material possessions. They do not believe that others have a greater sense of emotional wellbeing than they do.

Recently,  The Harvard Mental Health Letter published an article which  indicated  that  people  with  chronic(慢性的)pain had as significant a sense of wellbeing as those without chronic pain. However, those with chronic pain tended to overestimate the emotional wellbeing of physically healthy people. The study confirmed that it is how we view events that is important, not the nature of our circumstances which may include making comparisons.

【1】 It seems that those who make comparisons don't________.

    A. care about their success

    B. have selfconfidence

    C. overestimate others' experience

    D. understand others' success

【2】The third paragraph mainly tells us________.

    A. people tend to compare themselves to other individuals

    B. those who make comparisons focus on their strengths

    C. those who make comparisons don't deserve compliments

    D. making comparisons can cause many negative effects

【3】The article published in The Harvard Mental Health Letter  indicates________.

    A. chronic pain actually doesn't affect people's sense of  happiness

    B. physically healthy people have a higher sense of happiness

    C. emotional health has nothing to do with physical health

    D. what is important is the nature of events rather than our viewpoints

【4】 What is the author's attitude towards “making comparisons”?

    A.  Favorable.   B.  Unconcerned.

    C.  Disapproving. D.  Doubtful.

  • 22、   As cars have gotten fancier, tiny computers, called microprocessors — commonly known as chips(芯片) — have been added to control many different parts of a car. Modern cars may have as many as 150 microprocessors.

Last year, many car makers had to close their factories because of COVID-19. Since they weren’t making cars, they canceled many of their orders with chip makers, which forced the companies that make microprocessors to stop making so many chips for cars. They began selling lots of chips to other kinds of companies. For example, during the lockdown many people bought computers and video game systems to help pass the time while they were stuck at home. This meant that companies which made computers and video game systems needed a lot of chips for their products. So now demand for new vehicles has returned, but there aren’t enough microprocessors.

One company that studies the car business says that the chip shortage has already caused car makers to produce 500,000 fewer cars. The company expects that number to drop by 300,000 more cars this year. Ford stopped making cars at its Kentucky factory in December, and has slowed up work at a factory in Germany. General Motors has decided to make fewer cars at its factories in Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and the United States. Honda and Nissan have stopped making cars at some of their factories. However, the problem has not affected the entire auto industry equally. Toyota says it diversified its supply chain and stored a huge number of components after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. And Hyundai didn’t cancel any of its chip orders in 2020 due to COVID-19, so it is almost not affected. But the hit to the industry has been reported at $61 billion.

Another reason for the shortage is that there just aren’t many companies that make chips. Most of the large chip-making companies are in China.

Most experts think the bottleneck is expected to last for months.

【1】Why does the author mention computers and video game systems in Paragraph 2?

A.To explain why car makers lack chips.

B.To show they can help people kill time.

C.To warn they’ll do harm to car making.

    B.It cancelled many chip orders.

C.It prepared for supply chain failures.

D.It united Hyundai for chip shortage.

【3】What is the author’s attitude to the present chip supply?

    A.Anxious.

    B.Objective.

【4】What is the suitable title for the text?

    A.Automakers Promote Chip Production

    B.Chip Shortage Becomes Common

C.Chip Development Is on the Way

    D.Chip Shortage Hurts Car Makers

  • 24、   Copenhagen, voted as the "Best City for Cyclists" and "World's Most Livable City", has a profound bicycle culture, one that is rooted in almost every Copenhagener's daily life.

For Copenhageners, bicycles are one of the best means of transportation. They are convenient, fast and environmentally friendly. Every morning, when I head to school, I can see a great many cyclists from all age groups riding their well-equipped and beautifully designed bicycles to school or work. What is most unbelievable for me is that even those aged 70 or 80 still prefer biking as their main mode of transportation.

The Danes' passion for bicycles is similar to the Chinese craze for ping-pong or Brazilians' love of football; many great cyclists arise in Denmark who have already achieved great success in the international sporting arena. One example is Larsen Norman Hansen, a Danish professional road and track racing cyclist, who won one gold medal and two silver medals in big events. In addition, bikes are also huge part of the recreational life of many young Danes. One of my Danish friends, Laurits Genz, a 21-year-old Chinese studies student from Copenhagen University, has a hobby of rebuilding old bicycles. He has collected many old bikes from a recycling station near his home and completely restored them, giving them new parts and a fresh coat of paint. He believes that eventually, all of these bikes with that "classic" look are going to be very sought after and valuable.

Some people might wonder why bike-related culture is so universal and popular in Copenhagen, but not as much so in other parts of the world. I would name a couple of reasons: First of all, the infrastructure constructed in Copenhagen is very cyclist friendly. On many roads in Copenhagen, if cyclists can ride their bikes at the speed of 20 kph and remain stable, they can surf through on a wave of green traffic lights through the city without putting a foot down. It's absolutely a great environment. Another factor is the government's friendliness to cyclists. Because of this government policy, bikers enjoy a sort of encouraged state of privilege(特权), meaning they will stick to this means of transportation even during the coldest winter season. Danes' tendency toward a healthy and environmentally friendly lifestyle also lends itself to choosing cycling.

【1】What makes the author feel most surprised according to Paragraph 2?

    A.People aged 70 or 80 preferring biking.

    B.The advantages represented by bicycles.

C.The passion for bicycles shown by Danes

D.Bike-related culture rooted in Danes' daily life.

【2】How many factors contribute to the popularity of riding bikes in Copenhagen?

    A.1.

    B.2.

    C.3.

    D.4

【3】What can we learn from the text?

A.Larsen Norman Hansen won three gold medals in big events.

B.Bicycles are the best means of transportation in Copenhagen.

C.Everyone in Denmark can rebuild old bicycles by themselves.

D.The government policy is in favor of this kind of transportation.

【4】What does the underlined phrase "sought after" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Fashionable.

    B.Newly-designed.

    C.Popular.

    D.Well-equipped.
