24、 It is very important to have a law to base your life on. As for me, the law of life is that success is a journey, not a destination (目的地). It means that the most important is not where you are in the end, but what you have accomplished (完成) while you are trying along the way.
One person who shares my law of life is Mark McGwire, a U.S. baseball player. He once played for St. Louis Cardinals. He wasn’t caught up in the home-run competition in the 1998 season, but he tried his best to play every game. And, most of the time, he helped his teammates instead of promoting (提升) personal performance, because he wanted to make it a good season for the whole team.
I also think the Cardinals as a whole is following my law of life. They play every game with their full potential (潜力) instead of letting a few winning games go to their heads. They stay focused on the games in the World Series. Even if they lose some games, they never give up.
It doesn’t matter whether you have the ability to be on the top in the end or win the championship. All that matters is that you work hard the whole time. There are a few people in the world who have already understood that success is a journey, not a destination. But wouldn’t it be a much better world if everyone did? After all, it’s not about who wins or loses, but about how well you play the game. I hope I can apply this to my own life.

World-famous physicist(物理学家)Stephen Hawking died peacefully in his home in Cambridge on March 14th, 2018.
Hawking was born in Oxford, England on January 8th, 1942. He went to school in a small city near London. As he himself admitted, he wasn’t very serious about studying. He did very little work, and he was never top of his class. However, he still achieved good marks. After leaving school, Hawking first went to Oxford University to study physics. Then he went to Cambridge University to study cosmology(宇宙学).
At the age of 21, Hawking noticed something wrong with him. He had a bad illness that stopped him from moving and talking. He couldn’t communicate except by blinking(眨眼). He sat on a wheelchair with a computer by his side. To communicate with others, he moved two fingers to control the computer’s mouse. He chose his words from the screen, which were then spoken by a voice synthesizer(语音合成器). “I’ve had the disease for most of my life,” Hawking once said. “Yet it has not stopped me from being successful at my work.”
Although Hawking was a disabled man, he made great achievements. He received many awards and prizes for his work, including the Albert Einstein Award—the highest achievement in physics.
Hawking worked at Cambridge University as a professor. His story shows that nobody, however bad their situation is, should lose hope. “Life is not fair,” he once said. “You just have to do the best you can in your own situation.”

26、Cycling isn’t always easy. Busy streets and few bike lanes and parking areas can make it a battle. But not even these difficulties can stop Europeans’ love for cycling. According to Reuters, more bicycles have been sold than cars in 26 of the European Union’s 28 states this year.
In some European countries, people really love bicycles. “People ride to work and take their bikes to the grocery store”, Bill Strickland, editor of Bicycling magazine, told the reporter from Reuters.
So what has led to cycling’s growing popularity in Europe? Cycling is “a safe, clean, healthy, inexpensive way to get around town,” the Daily Star concluded. “It not only reduces traffic problems and pollution, but also contributes to public health.”
Bike-friendly rules have also been made. Dozens of cities have joined a European Union initiative(倡议)to make bicycles a form of city transport, like cars. Quite a few cities such as Stockholm, London, Florence and Munich now offer special bike lanes. Copenhagen takes it a step further by keeping bicycles and cars separated as much as possible. On these routes, traffic lights are designed to the rhythms of bicycles, not cars. For people living far from city centers, getting to work by bicycle alone may take too much time. That’s why many European countries now allow cyclists to bring their bicycles onto subway trains. Europeans are also creative in solving parking problems. Amsterdam has come up with a high-tech solution: you lock your bike to a rack(机架), which then goes underground. When you want your bike back, it is brought back to the surface.
