四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Tea bag drinking is most westerners’ favorite way of drinking tea. Do you know how it came about?

The tea bag was invented in 1908 by Thomas Sullivan, an American tea seller. He was sending out free tea in silk bags for people to try. People put the bags together with the tea leaves into the cup and added hot water. The tea tasted good, and people thought it was easy to clean the cup. They were not happy when Sullivan started sending them loose (散的) tea again.

Sullivan realized that he had a hot new thing in his hands, and he built a machine to pack the bags. As tea bags became popular, they were changed from silk to gauze (薄纱) and later paper. In 1952, Lipton Tea made the tea bag even more popular with its invention of the four-sided tea bag. Tea bags were soon a hit in the UK, and today 85% of the tea in the UK is packed in paper bags.

However, many people still prefer loose-leaf tea. This is because some tea companies put not very good tea in their tea bags. But for most drinkers, tea bags are still the easy, tasty way to go.

  • 25、We do eye exercises. We wear sunglasses. We do lots of things to protect our eyes. But we usually forget another important part of our body — the ears. Ears help us hear the world. But many things, such as loud noises, can hurt our ears, even make us deaf. Once this happens, it’s hard to get your hearing back. March 3rd is Ear Care Day. So how can we protect our ears?

Keep your ears dry and warm

Dry your ears with a towel (毛巾) after swimming or taking a shower. If you feel water in your ear, shake your head a little bit. This can help you get the water out of your ear.

Also, when the sun is shining, wear some sunscreen (防晒霜) on your ears. During the winter, protect your ears with a hat or a scarf.

    How to clean your ears

Usually, our ears clean themselves. The earwax (耳垢) builds up, dries out, and then comes out of the ear along with some dirt. Don’t clean your ears with anything sharp (尖锐的), or it may make the earwax go too deep into your ears and hurt them. But if your ears start to hurt, you can go to a doctor for help.

    How to use earphones

Don’t listen to loud music on your earphones for a long time. Follow the “60 Rule”: listen to music for no more than 60 minutes a day. Over-ear (头戴式) earphones are better than in-ear ones. It will do a better job of stopping outside noise. So you can listen at a lower volume.

【1】Which of the following ways is bad for your ears?

A.Using a towel to dry your ears after swimming.

B.Taking the earwax out with any sharp things.

C.Using some sunscreen on your ears in summer.

D.Covering your ears with a hat or a scarf in winter.

【2】Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A.Our cars can hardly ever clean themselves.

B.We do lots of things that may hurt our ears.

C.The earwax may come out of our ears itself.

D.We’d better clean our ears with a doctor’s help.

【3】What does the underlined word “It” (in the last paragraph) refer to?

    A.Following the “60 Rule”.

    B.Listening to loud music.

    C.Wearing in-ear earphones.

    D.Wearing over-ear earphones.

【4】What’s the best title for this passage?

    A.Why are ears so important?

    B.What can hurt our ears?

C.How do we take care of our ears?

D.When is the Ear Care Day?

  • 26、Chip was in first grade when I arrived at his school as a counselor(辅导员). It was shocking to me that he was described as an angry, uncontrollable and evil(惹人厌的) boy. How could such a little boy, after being in school only one year, be considered “evil”? Over the next several months, I came to know Chip well enough to see that he was neither evil nor uncontrollable.

But, one day, Chip threw a chair at his teacher and was sent to my office. I asked him what made him do this. He replied that his teacher hated him. He felt there was no way to ever get her to like him. I asked him if he would tell his teacher this. He nodded, and we called her into my office.

When the teacher came, ________. He then said that he knew he was a very, very bad boy, and he didn’t think anyone could ever like him. His teacher listened to him with heartfelt compassion. Then she gave him a big warm hug, telling him she didn’t hate him at all and, actually, she cared very much about him. Only sometimes Chip’s behavior really scared her. It was clear to both Chip and me that she really meant it.

I put my left arm on his shoulders and the right hand on his heart. I told him how wonderful and lovely I saw him to be. I praised how special and brave he was to express his hurt feelings.

As I was speaking to him, his_whole_body_came_to_rest_on_my_right_hand_next_to_his_heart. It was a moment in time unlike anything I had experienced before. From then on, I’m pleased to see his behavior improved through the rest of school years.

A child’s mind is clear and sensitive(敏感的). He receives whatever others say without protection. It is as easy to consider someone hopeless as it is to consider him able in his own special way.
