二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、CANYOUIMAGINEHOWHARDITWOULDBETOREADSENTENCESLIKETHIS? Every one of us gets so used to punctuation marks that not many of us give them a second thought. Actually, the ancient Greeks wrote this way. The lack of punctuation marks probably didn’t bother good readers, though. As they read, they just put pauses where they fit best. Also at this time, sentences switched directions. A sentence read from left to right. The next one read right to left, and then left to right again, etc. The ancient Romans sometimes punctuated like this: They put something that can separate words in a sentence. The word punctuation actually comes from this idea and the Latin word punctum, which means a dot.

When the 5th century arrived, there were just two punctuation marks: spaces and points. The spaces separated words while the points showed pauses in reading. Then in the 13th century, a printer named Aldus Manutius tried to standardize punctuation. He always used a period for a complete stop at the end of a sentence. He used a slash (/) to indicate a short pause. Over time, that slash was shortened and curled, and it became the modern comma (逗号).

Since that time, other marks have enlarged the punctuation family. The exclamation mark (感叹号) comes from the Latin word io. It means “exclamation of joy.” The question mark originally started out as the Latin word questio, meaning question. Eventually, scholars put it at the end of a sentence to show a question.

Punctuation even keeps changing nowadays. New marks are coming into existence, and old punctuation marks are used in new ways. Take for example the “interrobang”. This 1962 invention combines the question mark and exclamation mark for times when writers want both. For example, “She did what?” or “How much did you pay for that dress?” Obviously, the interrobang is not widely used or recognized yet, but its invention shows that English is not yet finished with its punctuation.

【1】From the first paragraph, we can know that _______.

    A. good readers had trouble reading without punctuation marks

    B. a sentence always read from left to right in ancient Greece

    C. ancient Greeks switched the direction of punctuation marks

    D. the use of punctuation marks can date back to ancient times

    【2】The passage is developed _______.

    A. by time   B. by space

    C. by comparison   D. by importance

【3】We can learn from the passage that _______.

    A. ancient Romans didn’t use any punctuation marks

    B. exclamation and question marks came from Latin

    C. spaces and slashes were already used before the 5th century

    D. Aldus Manutius first started to use commas

【4】What can be concluded from the last paragraph?

    A. The combination of two marks will not work.

    B. It takes time for people to accept new punctuation marks.

    C. Old punctuation marks need to be standardized.

    D. Punctuation marks are still changing today.

  • 23、When I volunteered to spend a hot summer on a land-based whale-watching project in the West of Scotland, the project secretary warned me, “You have to be able to detect the whales from the shore - it's not as easy as you think.” Although I assumed I was well-qualified for the job at the start of the project I had a few embarrassing moments screaming “Whale!” before realizing that what I was pointing out were only waves breaking over underwater rocks, not sea creatures at all! After a while, I trained my eyes to “see”-to distinguish between waves hitting rocks and the rolling movement of whales underwater.

I spent a lot of time just watching the sea through my binoculars(双筒望远镜),looking actively for anything that indicated sea life below. My binoculars enabled me to spot the fins(鳍) of a dolphin against the darkness of the sea, and without a good pair of binoculars I definitely would have missed out on lots of amazing sea life.

In addition, I eventually realized that the birds provide us with signals that whales and dolphins may be in the area. Where there is a group of feeding seabirds such as seagulls or gannets, there is often a whale feeding under them. Gannets are really easy to spot from a distance- they drop out of the sky at speeds of up to 100 kph, spearing the surface and sending bursts of water up behind them.

If you want to try this activity, it is worth organizing and planning carefully for whale watching. I recommend having a notebook and a pencil nearby to record details of what you've seen and the environmental conditions at the time. This is not only a helpful aid in general, but you can also contribute your sightings to research projects such as the Sea Watch Foundation, which are monitoring the distribution of whales and dolphins.

Despite the early disappointments I had, I think there is undoubtedly something very special about watching whales. Nothing can compare with the secret thrill and the peacefulness of seeing a wild animal just doing its own thing.

【1】What did the author learn from the embarrassing moments?

A.It was hard to carry out the project.

B.The project secretary was very strict.

C.Most whales were not afraid of humans.

D.Whale-watching was not as easy as expected.

【2】Which of the following is mentioned in Paragraph 2?

A.The features of the author's binoculars.

    B.Binoculars ' importance for whale-watching.

C.How the author got a good pair of binoculars.

D.How to use binoculars when watching whales.

【3】The author advised whale watchers to

    A.record whale-watching details

    B.be careful when watching whales

C.watch whales from the shore only

D.seek help from the Sea Watch Foundation

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

    A.Pleasant summer memories

    B.The thrill of watching whales

    C.Useful whale-watching advice

D.A fantastic world under the water

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions:Read the following passage.Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrate.Use your own words as far as possible.

Hacking our senses to boost learning power

Was your school noisy or peaceful? It might not seem important, but a growing body of research suggests that sounds can have an impact on learning, performance and creativity. There is certainly some well-established research to suggest that some noises can have a harmful effect on learning.Numerous studies over the past 15 years have found that children attending schools under the flight paths of large airports lag behind in their exam results.

But general noise seems to have an effect too. Bridget Shield,a professor of acoustics at London South Bank University, and Julie Dockrell, now at the Institute of Education, have been conducting studies on the effects of all sorts of noises, such as traffic and sirens,as well as noise generated by the children themselves. When they recreated those particular sounds in an experimental setting while children completed various cognitive tasks, they found a significant negative effect on exam scores.“Everything points to a harmful impact of the noise on children's performance,in numeracy(计算能力),in literacy, and in spelling,”says Shield. The noise seemed to have an especially harmful effect on children with special needs.

Shield says the sound of"babble"---the chatter of other children,is particularly distracting in the classroom.“People are very distracted by speech---particularly if it's understandable, but you're not involved in it."This phenomenon is also known as the irrelevant speech effect, she says, adding that“it's a very common finding in open-plan offices as well."

Whether background sounds are beneficial or not seems to depend on what kind of noise it is and the volume. In a series of studies published last year,Ravi Mehta from the College of Business at Illinois and colleagues tested people's creativity while exposed to a soundtrack made up of background noises---such as coffee-shop chatter and construction-site drilling---at different volumes. They found that people were more creative when the background noises were played at a medium level than when volume was low. Loud background noise, however, damaged their creativity.
