二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In the digital age, we rely on technology such as social media in trying to build interesting and varied lives. Social networking sites like Facebook are designed and promoted to make us believe enthusiastically that they are able to open up new experiences for us. There are constant notifications (通知), status updates and incentives to check-in to find out what is new.

But if we do not use the technology wisely, we can end up becoming overly attached and trapped in a cycle of social media FOMO, a sign of deeper unhappiness. FOMO, or fear of missing out, is a fear that exciting or interesting events are happening somewhere else and that we are not able to take part.

People who experience high levels of FOMO have been found to be more likely to give in to urges to compose and check text messages while driving, as well as to use Facebook more often directly after waking, while going to sleep and during meals.

When it comes to lasting happiness, it is best not to give in to FOMO, but rather to deal with the cycle of desires that fuel it. Hard as it is, we are better off working toward facing the fearful reality that we cannot experience everything we might like than to get caught in a cycle of checking behaviors that only sustain anxiety.

If we have become accustomed to using social media as part of our attempts at living interesting lives, we must acknowledge that it is not easy to change our approach. But change is almost always worthwhile in the long run.

The fact that FOMO is so common in our digital age is a sign that there is something wrong with the way we are pursuing happiness and that we are not as happy as we might think we are. It should warn us that, in our keenness to use digital technology to try to make ourselves happier, we may unintentionally be bringing on exactly the opposite result.

【1】With paragraph 1, the writer aims to tell us that social media _________.

A.is not worthy of our trust

    B.tries to attract our attention

    C.needs to be checked constantly

    D.provides new reliable information

【2】Which of the following could be regarded as social media FOMO?

A.Being afraid of missing a Facebook update.

B.Feeling anxious about socializing with others.

C.Posting food photos on social media.

    D.Handling multiple tasks at once.

【3】What does the author suggest people do to achieve long-term happiness?

A.Select the social media platform that is suitable to your taste.

B.Strive to make small changes on a daily basis.

C.Acknowledge there are limits to enjoyment in life.

D.Get rid of the desire to check social updates

【4】What's the main idea of the last paragraph?

    A.Influence of FOMO.

    B.Wise use of technology.

    C.Problems FOMO can reflect.

    D.Ways of pursuing happiness

  • 22、Over the past 50 years, scientists have been attempting to understand one of the most pressing iss ues in biology — understanding how proteins fold. Recently, DeepMind, a leader in Al, demonstrated their project AlphaFold which won first place in a contest that encourages teams to accurately predict protein structures.

Proteins are one of the main building blocks of life — they help us maintain our health and fuel our bodies with energy. Each protein is made up of one-dimensional-strings of amino acids (氨基酸), and the folding process occurs when the chains fold into a three-dimensional shape to create an active protein. Protein folding is important as the structure of the protein determines its function. However, issues may arise during the folding process as proteins can become unfolded or misfolded, resulting in diseases and life-threatening conditions, such as Parkinsons disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and more.

Being able to predict a proteins shape is incredibly important. It will allow scientists to develop the right medicines and drug molecules (分子) that can join to the protein and possibly fix, or alleviate the consequences. Fixing damaged proteins is the key to solving a wide variety of diseases

DeepMind takes inspiration from the human brain and its pattern-matching abilities, known as neural networks. To train the algorithm (算法), scientists feed it several amino acid chains and the final protein structure. The machine gradually learns by observing the patterns, until it is ready to start making predictions.

Andrei Lupas, an evolutionary biologist in Germany, had been trying to understand a protein structure for a decade. Alpha Fold solved the problem in just thirty minutes!

There are some who question AlphaFold’s abilities, claiming that the algorithm may not work as well in real-life settings where amino acid strings are more complex. But despite this DeepMind’s achievement is definitely a milestone in biology. Not only is DeepMind in the process of applying this to the current COVID-19 pandemic and what proteins are affected but future pandemics and viruses could also be fought with ease!

【1】What can we infer from the second paragraph?

    A.Unfolded proteins are incredibly active.

B.Some diseases result from damaged proteins.

C.All proteins have the similar shapes.

D.The function of proteins decides their structures.

【2】What does the underlined word “alleviate” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Suffer

    B.Cause

    C.Bear

    D.Ease

【3】Why does the author mention Andrei Lupas?

A.To stress the drawback of AlphaFold.

B.To analyze the barriers for AlphaFold

C.To explain the learning process of AlphaFold.

D.To prove the efficiency of AlphaFold.

【4】What might be the best title for the text?

A.AI solves the biggest problem in biology

    B.AI helps fix damaged proteins

C.AI makes proteins change their shapes

D.AI finds the cause of the illnesses

  • 23、How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environmentsmostly for entertainment purposesis fair and respectful?

Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. How ever, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats (栖息地). Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural bones.

Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species(物种), but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range(分布区). The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.

The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called_____A worldwide study of zoos found thatzoochosisis common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.

Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding(圈养繁殖)of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted n their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?

Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.

1How would the author describe the animals’ life in zoos?

    A. Dangerous.

    B. Unhappy.

    C. Natural.

    D. Easy.

2In the state ofzoochosis, animals _________.

    A. remain in cages

    B. behave strangely

    C. attack other animals

    D. enjoy moving around

3What does the author try to argue in the passage?

    A. Zoos are not worth the public support.

    B. Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.

    C. Zoos should treat animals as human beings.

    D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.

4The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by _____.

    A. pointing out the faults in what zoos do

    B. using evidence he has collected at zoos

    C. questioning the way animals are protected

    D. discussing the advantages of natural habitats

  • 24、Great Activities for Nature Lovers

    Hiking

One of the easiest and most accessible ways to get close to nature is by setting out on a good old fashioned hike. Hiking generally doesn’t require any fancy equipment or special skills, just a piece of map and a thirst for adventure. This activity can be as relaxing as you make it.

    Backcountry Camping

Why limit yourself to just a day hike when you can have a full weekend or longer adventure? Backcountry Camping involves packing your tent, sleeping gear, food, and water on your back to set up camp in a remote location. If you’re an experienced hiker and camper, this is an excellent way to test your survival skills and explore the wilderness.

    Mountain and Road Biking

Unlike long hikes through the woods, biking allows you to cover more ground and travel farther in nature. Mountain biking typically involves riding up and down steep slopes, between trees, and over rocks. If this sounds too intense or your tires aren’t suited for rugged terrain(地形), consider taking a road bike on paved trails through forest preserves or along country roads.

    Gardening

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to travel beyond your own backyard to experience the beauty of nature every day. If your personality is less adventurous or your mobility is restricted, consider planting a garden to grow your own vegetables, fruits, herbs, or flowers. There’s something truly satisfying about mixing up a salad with fresh ingredients you grew yourself. One of the best parts about spending time in nature is that it doesn’t have to break your budget and anyone can do it.

【1】What does hiking need for hikers?

    A.A world map.

    B.A strong desire.

    C.Practical skills.

    D.Necessary equipment.

【2】Where will you go to show your survival potential in the wild?

    A.To a backyard.

    B.To a forest.

    C.To a mountain.

    D.To a distant place.

【3】What is the advantage of enjoying the natural beauty in your garden?

    A.It’s popular.

    B.It saves money.

    C.It’s adventurous.

    D.It saves time.
