  • 21、When ten-year-old Reese Osterberg lost her Fresno County, California, home to one of the largest wildfires in state history early last fall, she had a very pressing concern: Did anyone grab her baseball cards?

No one had. With a houseful of kids and dogs and a farm’s worth of horses to evacuate (撤离), the family forgot the cards amid the stress. Naturally, the diehard (铁杆支持者) San Francisco Giants fan and Little League lefty with a swing as smooth as butter was upset. When she watched the Giants on TV, she would lay out each player’s card on the floor in his corresponding field position. “I like baseball cards because they are pictures of people doing happy stuff — doing what they love, and what I love,” says Reese.

Reese’s loss touched the hearts of the Fresno County fire department, which posted her story on its Facebook page with a request to help Reese restock her baseball card collection. That, in turn, touched the heart of Kevin Ashford.

Ashford knew exactly where Reese could find replacement cards: in his garage. He had more than 25,000 in his collection, with a ballpark (棒球场) value of $35,000 to $50,000. Ashford had been thinking about selling them when he saw the fire department’s post. “I wasn’t really doing anything with them,” saysAshford. “I thought I could take care of this problem rather quickly.”

First responders transported the cards from Ashford’s garage to theirs and then surprised Reese during a tour of the firehouse. Towers of Ashford’s cards were piled in front of the fire engine. After thanking Ashford (especially for the Buster Posey, her favorite Giant), Reese, ever the team player, was quick to share the thousands of baseball cards she received from Ashford and donors around the country with other kids affected by California’s Creek Fire.

She’s gotten so many, in fact, that she started Cards from Reese, an organization that collects cards and donates them to those in need. Reese is especially happy to part with Los Angeles Dodgers cards. As she explains it, “Go Giants!”

    【1】What brought Reese down?

A.The result of the baseball game.

B.The loss of her basement cards.

    B.To donate money to victims.

    C.To contribute cards to people.

    D.To popularize her loved team.

The two goats looked at each other, and each wished to pass over first.

They stood for a while one foot on the tree, each thinking that the other would turn back. But neither of them would give way, and they met at last on the middle of the narrow bridge!

They then began to push and fight with their horns, till at last their feet missed, and both the goats fell into the running river, and were lost in the water!

  • 24、It is true that most of the time we should depend on ourselves for safety rather than entirely on the police, especially when staying al home.

Marie Van Brittan Brown, an African American nurse living in Jamaic, Queens in the 1960s, was working in shifts, as was her husband, Albert, an electronics technician. When she arrived home late, she sometimes felt afraid. Serious crimes in Queens jumped nearly 32 percent from 1960 to1965, and police were slow to respond to emergency calls. Marie wanted to feel safer at home.

With the help of her husband. Marie imagined a device that could be attached to the front door. It would offer lour small holes, and through these, a video camera on the inside could view visitors of different heights as the host turned the camera up and down. The camera was connected to a television monitor inside. A microphone on the outside of the door and a speaker inside allowed the host to interrogate a visitor, while an alarm could inform the police via radio.

Closed-circuit Television (CCTV), invented during World War II for military use, was not widespread in 1960s, and the Browns proposed using the technology to create the first modem home security system. They filed a patent for their device in 1966, citing Marie as the leading inventor. It was approved three years later. “The equipment is not in production,” The New Times reported, “But the Browns hope to interest manufactures and home builders.” That never happened. “The cost of installing it widely would be very pretty high,” says Robert McCrie, an emergency management expert at John Jay College of Criminal in Manhattan.

Marie’s invention, though it didn’t benefit them financially would earn the Browns a measure of recognition in the technology world: The predecessor (前身) of today’s home security systems, it has been cited in 35 US patents.

【1】What can we learn about the main character Marie?

A.She worked as an electronics technician.

B.She lived in an unsafe and dangerous neighborhood.

B.It was regarded as a silly invention.

C.It was thought little of by the then police.

D.It was illegal to be used by common people.

Once upon a time, there was an old man who couldn't read or write. When he was little, his family was so poor that he couldn't attend school. But he always dreamed of being able to read.

One day, he took his seven-year-old grandson to school.

Since he didn't have anything to do that day, he didn't leave immediately. Instead, he stood outside his grandson's classroom and looked in through the window.

The kids' teacher, who was an old man in his fifties, entered the classroom when the class began. The teacher was wearing thick glasses. He started teaching. Through watching him, the old man found something interesting, He noticed that the teacher could read nothing without putting his glasses on. As soon as he put on his glasses, he could read very well.

“How amazing! said the old man to himself.

He waited outside the classroom until the class was over and stopped the teacher.

“Excuse me, sir," said the old man to the teacher.

    “Yes?” said the teacher.

“I noticed something amazing. You can't read without the glasses, right?" said the old man.

"Yes, that's true. I can read nothing without them," replied the teacher.

"But you can read once you put them on, can't you?" asked the old man.

"Yes, that's true, too," replied the teacher, wondering why the old man was asking such strange questions.

The teacher looked at the old man, who left in a hurry with a big smile on his face.

The old man, who was extremely happy, decided to go to town to find an eyeglasses store. After being unable to read so many years, he finally found an easy way to read, which cheered him up. He realized what he needed to read was just a pair of glasses.

"I can finally read,” said the old man to himself when walking to the town.
