二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When Alex Lin was 11 years old, he read an alarming article in the newspaper about e-waste. The article said that people were throwing away their e-waste in places it should never go. This was dangerous, the article said, because e-waste contains poisonous chemicals and metals like lead. These harmful substances (物质) can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies — and people.

Alex showed the article to a few of his classmates. They were worried too. But what could they do about this problem with e-waste? How would they even start? “The first thing we did,” Alex says, “was to learn more about the problem.” Alex and his friends spent several weeks gathering information about the chemicals in e-waste and their effects on humans. They learned how to dispose (处理) of e-waste properly and how it could be recycled. “Then,” he says, “we had to find out what the situation was in our town. So we sent out a survey.”

What they found shocked them: Of the people who answered the survey, only one in eight even knew what e-waste was, let alone how to properly dispose of it. Alex and his friends went into action. They advertised in the local newspaper and distributed notices to students, asking residents to bring their unwanted electronics to the school parking lot. The drive lasted two days, and they collected over 21,000 pounds of e-waste.

The next step was to set up an e-waste drop-off center for the town and to find a responsible company to recycle the waste. That was when Alex and his friends learned another scary fact about e-waste — some irresponsible recycling companies don’t break down the e-waste and dispose of it safely themselves. Instead, they ship it overseas to countries such as China and Nigeria, where local environmental laws are not applied. “We checked carefully online to make sure the company we chose didn’t do this,” Alex says.

Because of the work of people like Alex and his team, more and more people are getting the message about safe disposal of e-waste. As Alex says, “Today’s technology should not become tomorrow’s poisonous trash.”

【1】What can we learn about Alex from paragraph 1 and paragraph 2?

A.He was curious about chemistry experiments.

B.He possessed a strong sense of responsibility.

C.He set out to solve the problem individually.

D.He formed the habit of reading newspapers.

【2】What does the underlined word “drive” mean?

    A.Campaign.

    B.Imagination.

    C.Performance.

    D.Technology.

【3】Why did some companies transport the e-waste to other countries?

A.Lack of available space was the reason for shipping.

B.Recycling was totally banned in their own country.

C.They were running their companies on a tight budget.

D.They were not charged with insecurely disposing it.

【4】What’s the suitable title for the text?

    A.Reusing School Computers

    B.Recycling Electronic Waste

    C.Meeting a challenge

    D.Doing Scientific Experiment

  • 22、Walter Wetzel had met Ryan Lamantia nearly eight years ago in a hospital waiting room. Both were very sick——Ryan with brain cancer, Walter with leukemia (白血病). Ryan, who was 3 at the time, began making silly faces at Walter and chatted about going home to change into his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles costume. Several days later, Ryan moved to another hospital. Though they saw each other only a handful of times after that, Walter never forgot Ryan.

"He inspired me to fight against my cancer," said Walter, now 17, a football player. Then one day, Walter saw a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shirt at a mall, which made him decide to search out Ryan. Back home, Walter typed in "Ryan Lake in the Hills brain cancer" on his computer, and a link to a Facebook page for Ryan came up. But, the news was shocking.

Ryan had died on Sept. 8, 2005. He was 6. The Facebook  page  was  for  the  Ryan  Lamantia Foundation, a non-profit organization that Ryan's family formed after his death to raise money for brain cancer research.

Walter left this message right away: ."Ryan is my hero. My trips to the hospital were always horrible, until the day I met Ryan."

Ryan's mom's eyes were filled with tears as she read Waiter's message. "We always knew Ryan was special, but to hear it from somebody else, it really means the world to us," Lamantia said.

Walter wasn't the only person who was greatly impressed with Ryan.

"He was a little superhero," said Wendy Stellpflug, a nurse at Children' s Memorial Hospital. "Ryan always kept his spirits high, even after he suffered hearing loss and experienced 14 operations."

"Ryan didn’ t let his illness stop him. He always had a smile on his face," said Dr. Stewart Goldman, the doctor who treated Ryan.

Walter and his family have been in touch with the Lamantias for the past few weeks. And last week, they met for the first time since Ryan's death. The families told stories of being affected by cancer so young and Walter expressed his hope to volunteer with Ryan' s foundation.

  • 24、One of my favorite actions is doing good deeds. When other people receive my help, it makes me happy. However, some people look at you strangely when you want to do that. Once I asked a gas station operator if I could pay for the car behind me, but I got a blank stare. After a short explanation, he hesitantly agreed, but then said it was so unbelievable when I pleasantly made this double payment.

So, it’s nice when people “get it”. It seems that people do me a favor too if they receive my favor. At a barbershop recently, after getting my hair cut, I went to the counter to pay. My barber said, “That’ll be twenty dollars please.”

I found that in my wallet I had exactly forty-two dollars. “OK, tell me if you think this is crazy—I’d like to pay for someone else’s haircut as well.”

She hardly hesitated, “Yeah, you can do that.”

Wow it seemed that she was used to this. How cool! She opened her appointment book and asked, “Who do you want to pay for?”

    “You pick.”

A pause. “Oh, you mean someone you don’t know?”

“Yeah, is that crazy? What do you think?”

“No, that’s great! I mean sure, why not?”

She agreed to pick an upcoming appointment of hers. I told her I was sorry I only had two dollars left for her trip, but that I would come back later with more. “No, no, this is enough,” she said with a smile, as she quickly wrote down a note. It was as if this idea was so pleasantly natural that she was being introduced to something familiar.

I don’t know who got my help at last, which isn’t important. The process is often just as satisfying, if not more that the result.

C.He couldn’t believe what the author said.

B.She misunderstood the author at first.

C.She always helps others like the author.

D.She always helps the author like others.

【3】How much money did the author have when he left the barbershop?

    A.Forty-two dollars.

    B.Twenty-two dollars.

    C.Two dollars.

    D.None.

【4】The author probably thinks helping process is ________.

    A.rather satisfying

    B.difficult to accept

    C.less exciting

    D.very boring

【5】Which of the following best describes the author?

    A.Serious and stone-hearted.
