21、Humor raises your energy and transports your mind away from your daily troubles. Humor lets you better understand life and sometimes helps you laugh at even the worst of your problems. But not all senses of humor are created equal. 【1】
You don’t have to be the joke teller in the group in order to show your sense of humor. You can be the one who directs the conversation to fun topics that are ripe for others to add humor. Every party needs a straight person. You’ll appear fun and funny by association.
【2】When people see you trying to be funny, it frees them to try it themselves. So even if your own efforts at humor all short, you might be freeing the long kept humor in others. People need permission to be funny in social settings because there’s always a risk that comes with humor. For in-person humor, your attitude and effort count a lot.
Some people believe that humorous complaint about the little problems of life make humor. 【3】The problem comes when you start doing too much complaint-based humor. One funny observation about problem in your life can be funny, but five is just complaining, no matter how smart you think you are. 【4】.
Self deprecating humor is usually the safest type, but here again you don’t want to overshoot the target. One self-deprecating comment is a generous and even confident form of humor. 【5】But if you do it too often, you can transform in the eyes of others from a confident joker to a Chihuahua dog.
A.And sometimes that is the case.
B.Funny complaints can wear people out.
C.Such are the most common humorous people.
D.When it comes to in-person humor, effort counts a lot.
E.Humor definitely plays a significant role in our daily life.
F.So it would be useful to include some humor tips for everyday life.
G.You have to be at least a bit self-assured to laugh at yourself in front of others.
22、It might be strange to wear clothes made out of plastic bottles, But in fact, some clothing companies are already making such clothes. Fashion brand JUMA recently showed its newest collection at a workshop in Shanghai. Eighteen clothing items from the collection, including jackets, shirts and dresses, were made from recycled plastic bottles. “We realized that billions of water bottles were being thrown into landfills and oceans every year and that these bottles take hundreds of years to break down.We thought we should use them to create our clothes and help the environment,” said Alia Juma, the company's design director.
Many other fashion companies are finding similar ways to save our planet these days. The process is rather simple. First, the plastic bottles are washed and cut into small pieces. Then they are melted and shaped into small balls. The balls are melted again to for thread. People can then use the thread to make different kinds of clothes.
According to Juma, it takes 67,000 bottles to create 1 ton of thread. This reduces carbon emissions(排放)by 4.2 tons and water use by 6.2 tons compared with the normal way of making thread.“Four bottles can make one pillowcase. Five can make a shirt, 10 a dress and 20 a short coat,”Juma said.
Some people might have doubts about wearing something made out of plastic bottles. But according to Causeartist, a website that focuses on innovation, clothes made from plastics could be even better than some clothing-making materials.Plastic thread can be made into different textures(手感),such as cotton, silk or even wool. “The more we learn about recycled fabrics, the more we realize that they work just like other fabrics. You can get a heavier cotton feeling or a silky feeling by weaving the yarns(纱)into different textures and using different wash methods. There's actually a lot you can do with this fabric.” Juma said.
Currently, the price for the clothes in the new collection ranges from 500 to 3,000 yuan, However, Juma is optimistic that prices will decline when more companies follow the sustainability path taken by her business.
【1】What caused Juma to create the clothes made from plastic bottles?
A.They are light to carry.
B.They are easy to wash.
C.They are simple to make.
D.They are environmentally friendly.
【2】How does Juma support her views in Paragraph 3?

B.By presenting figures.

D.The reduction of carbon emission when making plastic thread.
【4】What will the price of the plastic- made clothes be like in the future?
A.The price will go up year by year.
B.The price will range from 500 to 3,000 yuan.
C.The price will fall if more companies participate.
D.The price won't change a lot.
23、National Guide Dog Month is held in September every year. It is a month-long celebration set apart to honor the work of guide dogs and raise awareness, appreciation, and support for guide dog schools across the US. Guide dogs go through demanding training from an early age. They help those with sensory issues such as blindness and provide added mobility (移动能力) and independence for those who might not have otherwise had such freedoms.
The first attempt to train guide dogs was in Paris at the “Les Quinze-Vingts” hospital for the blind. The founder of the Institute for the Education of the Blindd “Blinden-Erziehungs-Institut” in Vienna, Johann Wilhelm Klein, wrote about guide dogs in his book published in 1819. This provides evidence that dogs have been helping humans for a long period.
After the World War I, when many soldiers came back blind, the use of guide dogs peaked. The demand for this service accounted for the opening of the first school for guide dogs in Oldenburg, Germany. Dog trainer Dorothy Harrison Eustis is credited with bringing the first guide dog to America, and Eustis later established the “Seeing Eye School” in Morristown, New Jersey.
Dick Van Patten was the inspiration behind National Guide Dog Month. He admired the ability of these dogs to improve the standards of life for those living with blindness but he was also aware of the time, energy, and cost that went into training these dogs. He decided to take action and raise awareness and provide financial support for guide dog schools. Van Patten owned a pet food company that underwrote (承担) all costs for the promotion of National Guide Dog Month. The first guide dog fundraiser was in Southern Califormia with the support of the Petco Foundation.
Thanks to Van Patten’s effort, many guide dog organizations have now become beneficiaries (受益者) of these month-long events. In the month of September, a drive is held to collect funds that go towards funding non-profit guide dog organizations accredited by the International Guide Dog Federation.

24、 Barbara and I were having dinner with four friends of ours. As the evening progressed, one friend talked about his struggle with a sister, who, at the age of 30, often quarreled with him. That prompted another friend to share how his brother was overdependent on his 70-year-old mother. He explained that he didn't know how his brother would survive after his mother died. Another friend shared a situation with his 40-year-old sister who didn't have a job and was regularly financially rescued by them. A fourth friend complained about a sibling (兄弟姐妹) who at 35 couldn't make a basic decision and spent most of his time going to watch motor racing. By the time we finished dessert, I commented, "I wonder if this is just what occurs in most families?'
And then, as Barbara and I drove home, the thought struck me: the problem with families is that all of us come from one!
Adult sibling relationships in families are like the weather-stormy at times, unpredictable and disruptive (破坏的). You may have a distant relationship with a sister. Perhaps you and your brother are no longer in contact with each other. Whatever your situation, I'd like to offer a couple of thoughts that might help you weather the storm.
Everyone comes from a less than perfect family. So you are not alone in dealing with your family relationships. The question is this: how will we respond to a sibling who is not making wise choices?
First, stop trying to change your sibling. At some point, you may have to let him or her be who he or she is. Second, give up your "911" job in your sibling's life. If you have a tendency to take responsibility for his or her life by rescuing him or her, resign from that role. Third, ask for help from some friends. Gather a couple of wise friends and ask them to give you some guidance. Finally, if your sibling continues making unwise choices, a formal intervention by family members may be necessary.
【1】The author mentions his friends' experiences in the first paragraph to.
A.encourage people to make different friends
B.introduce the topic of sibling relationships
C.show that his friends all have a miserable life
D.advise people to be close to friends and family
【2】What can we learn about the author's friends from the first paragraph?
A.They liked complaining to the author very much.
B.They all had close relationships with their siblings.
C.They were always dissatisfied with their personal life,
D.They were all facing difficult situations with their siblings.
【3】What do the underlined words "weather the storm" in the third paragraph probably mean?
A.Predict storms and bad weather.
B.Find a safe place to hide from a storm.
C.Gather a group of friends to get some guidance.
D.Improve your relationships with your adult siblings.
【4】What should you do if your brother continues making unwise decisions?
A.Take action to stop him.
B.Leave him alone.
C.Try to change him.
D.Call "911” for help.
