二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Nowadays, handwriting seems to become less necessary, for young children learn to tap and touch screens before they have even learned to pick up a pencil or tie their shoelaces. Most of our written communication is done through texting on mobile phones or typing on a keyboard. And voice recognition software is becoming more and more advanced一making even keyboard unnecessary!

So, are handwriting skills important to your child? Actually, handwriting is an exercise in eye-hand coordination (手眼协调), an important part of visual-motor (视觉运动) skills, which are connected with achievements in study. Scientists found that developing fine visual-motor skills in early childhood can lead to not only writing success, but better performance in reading and math in elementary school. It was also found that kids who fail to write neatly and efficiently are often accused of being lazy, and this may affect their behavior and self-worth. Moreover, a study showed that when a group of children were asked to come up with ideas for an article, the ones with better handwriting were more active and had quicker minds. In some ways, handwriting helps their brains' development.

The first attempts at writing can be challenging for pre-school children-- whose fine motor (精细动作)skills are not yet fully developed. But some skills to prepare for handwriting are simple to build at home and in preschool. Parents should provide lots of opportunities for kids to copy and draw shapes and simple pictures in early childhood before letters are introduced. Let your child copy your shapes in sand, or with chalk on a board before trying to draw the shapes on their own. Encourage your child to spend less time on electronic devices and more time on activities to improve eye-hand coordination.

Let's face it - technology is certain to continue developing and more research is needed to find the best ways to teach handwriting to young children. But, there' s plenty of evidence that the handwriting practice can provide young children with a good start in developing skills needed for a healthy and successful journey in school.

【1】According to Paragraph 1, handwriting is________.

A.easy to learn on a touch screen

    B.used less for communication now

    C.more difficult than typewriting

D.totally replaced by voice recognition software

【2】How does the author explain the benefits of handwriting'?

    A.By showing some research findings.

B.By giving examples of the kids around him.

C.By giving some news reports on handwriting.

D.By providing evidence about pupils with good grades.

【3】What does the author suggest parents do?

A.Keep young children away from electronic devices.

B.Teach pre-school children to write letters with chalk.

C.Help children get ready for handwriting before school.

D.Encourage children to face writing challenges bravely.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Does poor handwriting really mean being lazy?

B.Should handwriting be taken seriously in children's growth?

    C.How can handwriting affect children's self-confidence?

D.Should homework be done through handwriting or typewriting?

  • 22、“We are running out of space and the only places to go to are other worlds.... Spreading out may be the only thing that saves us from ourselves. I am convinced that humans need to leave Earth.” These are the words of the famous scientist Stephen Hawking, spoken at a science festival in Norway in 2017, a year before his death.

Hawking was not alone in this view. Many experts feel that the only way for humanity to last far into the future is to colonize (移民) other planets. That way, if an asteroid (小行星), a terrible disease, nuclear war, or some other disaster strikes Earth, civilization would still have a chance. Mars is one of the ideal destinations. NASA, SpaceX, and Mars One all have plans to send humans there. “Either we spread Earth to other planets, or we risk going extinct,” SpaceX founder Elon Musk said at a conference in 2013.

But not everyone agrees that colonizing Mars or any other planet is such a great plan. The most common argument against going is that it’s just too expensive or dangerous. It will take huge amounts of money and other resources just to get people there, let alone set up a place for them to live. It’s not even clear if humans could survive on Mars.

Maybe all the time and money people would pour into a Mars mission would be better spent on more urgent projects here on Earth, like dealing with poverty or climate change. Some experts argue that handling a problem like an asteroid strike or disease outbreak while staying here on Earth would be much easier and less expensive than surviving on a new planet.

In addition, moving to a new planet could harm or destroy anything that already lives there. Human visitors change or damage the Martian environment. Some feel that’s too much of a risk to take.

【1】What is Stephen Hawking’s view according to paragraph 1?

A.The earth is likely to blow up.

B.Humans are using up natural resources on Earth.

C.It is necessary to spread out to other planets.

D.We should explore our world to save ourselves.

【2】Why are many experts in favor of leaving Earth?

A.Because there will be a nuclear war in the near future.

B.Because human can live better on Mars.

C.Because it is a way for earth civilization to last.

D.Because it is a way to test our space technology.

【3】Which of the following may those who are against colonizing Mars agree?

A.It is wiser to deal with problems on Earth.

B.It is easy to stop a disease outbreak.

C.Human will not survive on Mars.

D.It is impossible to set up a place for people to live on Mars.

【4】What is the best title of passage?

    A.Leaving Earth to Other Planets

    B.Should We Colonize Mars?

    C.New Home on New Planet

D.A Mar Mission Is on The Way

  • 23、In the eighteenth century, Japan's feudal overlords (封建领主), from the shogun (幕府将军) to the humblest samurai (武士), found themselves under financial stress. In fact, this stress can be attributed to the overlords' failure to adjust to a rapidly expanding economy, but the stress was also due to factors beyond the overlord's control. Concentration of the samurai in castle-towns had acted as a stimulus to trade. Commercial efficiency, in turn, had put temptations in the way of buyers. Since most samurai had been reduced to idleness by years of peace, encouraged to engage in scholarship and martial exercises or to perform administrative tasks that took little time, it is not surprising that their tastes and habits grew expensive. Overlords' income, despite the increase in rice production among their tenant farmers (佃户), failed to keep pace with their expenses. Although shortfalls in overlord's income resulted almost as much from inefficiencies among their tax collectors as from their higher standards of living, a misfortune like a fire or flood, bringing an increases in expenses or a drop in revenue, could put an overlord in debt to the city rice-Otraders who handled its finances. Once in debt, neither the individual samurai nor the shogun himself found it easy to recover.

It was difficult for individual samurai overlords to increase their income because the amount of rice that farmers could be made to pay in taxes was not unlimited, and since the income of Japan's central government consisted in part of taxes collected by the shogun from his land, the government too was suffering. Therefore, the Tokugawa (德川幕府) shoguns began to look for other sources of revenue. Cash profits from government-owned mines were already on the decline because the most easily worked deposits of silver and gold had been exhausted. Opening up new farmland was a possibility, but most of what was suitable had already been exploited and further expansion was technically unfeasible. Direct taxation of the samurai themselves would be politically dangerous. This left the shoguns only commerce as a potential source of government income.

Most of the country's wealth, or so it seemed, was finding its way into the hands of city merchants. It appeared reasonable that they should contribute part of that revenue to ease the shogun's burden of financing the state. A means of obtaining such revenue was soon found by collecting forced loans, known as goyo-kin; although these were not taxes in the strict sense, since they were not fixed in amount and irregular in timing, they were high in yield (投资收益) . Unfortunately, they pushed up prices. Thus, regrettably, the Tokugawa shogun's efforts to pay off debts for the government made it increasingly difficult for individual Japanese who lived on fixed earnings to make ends meet.

【1】Which of the following could best replace the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2?

A.The importance of commerce in feudal Japan

B.The unfairness of the tax structure in eighteenth - century Japan

C.The difficulties involved in increasing government income by other means

D.The difficulty experienced by both individual samurai and the shogun himself in pulling themselves out of debt.

【2】According to the passage, the actions taken by the Tokugawa shoguns to pay off their debts for the government were regrettable because those actions ______.

A.raised the cost of living by pushing up prices

B.did not succeed in reducing government spending

C.resulted in the exhaustion of deposits of silver and gold

D.were far lower in yield than had originally been expected

【3】Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author toward the samurai discussed in the passage?

    A.Warmly approving

    B.Mildly sympathetic.

    C.Bitterly disappointed

    D.Profoundly shocked.

【4】The passage is most probably taken from ______.

D.an essay comparing Japanese and Western feudalism

  • 24、Many people would be unhappy to see young children sitting next to them on a flight, but a man called Todd took it as an opportunity to give a hand to a helpless mom. Jessica spoke about what Todd had done to make her travels with her children much easier.

She was in a panic when she boarded the plane. Her 4-month-old Alexander was screaming due to a series of unexpected events. Her 3-year-old Caroline, who had been excited before boarding the plane, lost her courage and began screaming too. As Jessica tried to calm them down and help them get settled in, the man sitting next to them stopped in to help.

He reached for the baby and held him while Jessica fastened Caroline’s seatbelt, got her iPad and started her movie. Once Caroline was settled and relatively calm, he also played games with her so that Jessica could feed Alexander. The kids were calm, but he didn't stop there. Throughout the flight, he engaged 3-year-old Caroline’s best friend.

Much to Jessica’s joy, the man was taking the same connecting flight, too. He helped them get off the plane and led them to the next gate, holding Caroline’s hand. As if that wasn't enough, he changed his seat on the next flight so he could sit in their row to help them. He told Jessica his wife had had a similar experience when their two boys were young and that a stranger had done the same thing, which moved him to spread the kindness.

The heartwarming story serves as a reminder to show kindness toward panic parents with young babies. Children don’t yet know how to handle their feelings, so they cry and scream when they are confused or uncomfortable in a new place. By offering a helping hand, we could not only help an overwhelmed parent but also make a child feel a little more comfortable.

【1】Jessica got panicked while boarding the plane because ________.

    A.she couldn’t find her passport

B.she was followed by a stranger

C.her children lost control of their emotions

D.her children were fighting with each other

【2】What did Todd do to draw Caroline’s attention away from her mom?

    A.Starting her movie.

    B.Feeding her snacks.

    C.Fastening her seatbelt.

    D.Playing games with her.

【3】What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?

A.Parents are always treated kindly at the airport.

B.People should help parents with young children.

C.Children cry in order to attract people’s attention.

D.Children refuse to learn to manage their emotions.

【4】According to the passage, Todd can be best described as ________.

    A.honest and funny

    B.brave and energetic

    C.selfless and determined

    D.patient and considerate
