二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It is inevitable (不可避免的) that students will make mistakes. Some teachers think punishing students is the most effective way for them to learn their lessons. Others choose a more moderate (温和的) way, like a face-to-face talk. I support the second.

In my opinion, punishment, especially physical punishment, will harm the students mentally. The students are likely to feel very ashamed. Their confidence may get lost as a result. They may end up locking themselves up and refusing to communicate with even their best friends. In such a situation, it will be very difficult to encourage them to open up again.

Furthermore, punishment is likely to cause additional misunderstandings between the teacher and the student. For example, my cousin once disturbed his teacher in class by talking to another student. The teacher only punished him instead of both of them. He believed the teacher to be partial towards students with better grades. Little by little, he started to dislike this teacher.

To help students learn lessons from their mistakes, there are many better methods for teachers to use than punishment. Here are some suggestions:

① Both the student and the teacher should calm down and then discuss the problem together.

② The teacher should give the student a chance to express his or her thoughts on the problem. In this way, the student may also be more willing to follow the teacher’s advice.

③ The teacher and the student can reach an agreement. For example, if the student promises not to make the same mistake again, the teacher can promise him or her a reward (奖励).

【1】According to the writer, if a student gets physical punishment, he or she may ________.

    A.understand the teacher

    B.lose the confidence

    C.follow the teacher’s advice

    D.learn some lessons

【2】What does the word partial probably mean in this passage?

    A.部分的

    B.热情的

    C.偏袒的

    D.聚会的

【3】The writer supports his/her idea by writing________.

    A.Para.1 and Para. 2

    B.Para. 2 and Para. 3

    C.Para. 2, Para. 3 and Para. 4

    D.Para. 3 and Para. 4

【4】The writer writes the passage in order to________.

A.To call on students not to make mistakes

B.To ask both teachers and students to calm down.

C.To advise teachers to use a better way instead of punishment

D.To advise teachers to use physical punishment

【5】From the passage we know the writer is ________.

    A.a nurse

    B.not a good student

    C.a strict teacher

    D.a worrying parent

  • 22、When we hurt someone, we may be unwilling to acknowledge our fault and make an apology because it makes us feel guilty, conflicts with our beliefs about being a good person, or means accepting that we’re imperfect human beings. We may want to excuse our behavior and blame the other person, minimizing our role in hurting him or her.

Researchers carried out a study to find out how we can be better at apologizing. In the study, researchers asked 120 college students to recall a time when they’d hurt someone else and the conflict remained unresolved. Then, participants were randomly assigned to either a 15-minute guided mindfulness exercise focusing on their breath and having people think in the present moment or a guided mind-wandering exercise, where they were encouraged to let their minds wander.

Afterward, they were asked to report how much they felt like apologizing to the person versus not apologizing or offering excuses for their behavior. Then, they were asked to write a note to the person, without instructions to apologize or not. In analyzing the notes, the researchers found that participants who had practiced mindfulness were more likely to write statements like “I’m sorry” or “I apologize” in their notes than those who had mind-wandered.

“One way in which we can foster apologies is by having people think in the present moment,” lead author Sana Rizvi says. “We can teach individuals to be mindful of their present states, and it can be done in about 15 minutes.”

Why might this be the case? Rizvi isn’t sure, as there has been very little research on how being more mindful might affect us when we hurt others. Prior research has found that being more mindful helps victims of wrong doing to be more forgiving, and it seems to improve relationships generally.

Mindfulness makes us feel less defensive and, therefore, helps us consider the importance of the other person in the conflict more. It’s encouraging that teaching simple mindfulness techniques (like focused breathing) could increase apologies, especially in places that are often filled with interpersonal conflicts, like workplaces or other occasions. It could help improve interpersonal interactions and repair relationships helping people move more easily from a place of conflict to understanding and forgiveness.

【1】What does the author want to convey in Paragraph 1?

A.It is difficult for us to apologize.

B.It is hard to put ideas into action.

C.It is normal for us to make mistakes.

D.It is useless to regret what we have done.

【2】What can we know about the participants in the study?

A.They were bad at handling conflicts.

B.They were encouraged to discuss their trouble.

C.They did something hurtful to others in the past.

D.They received mindfulness training before the study.

【3】What conclusion did the researchers draw from the study?

    A.Mind-wandering tended to increase conflicts.

B.Mindfulness could help people apologize more.

C.College students are more likely to behave responsibly.

D.College students seem to have better emotional control.

【4】What does the author think of practicing mindfulness in workplaces?

A.It is challenging to carry out.

B.It takes time to prove its effect.

C.It solves conflicts once and for all

    D.It helps achieve better relationships.

【5】What does the text mainly talk about?

    A.Necessity of apology.

    B.Benefits of mindfulness.

    C.Apology and mindfulness.

    D.Understanding and mindfulness.

  • 23、You jerk(猛然一动)awake in the middle of the night in confusion. Is there a figure standing in the corner of the room? Your brain begs your legs to move, but nothing happens. The anxiety increases. Your eyes scan the room. Just as you’re about to hit peak panic, you sit up and the figure disappears.

You’ve just experienced sleep paralysis(瘫痪), which is the name experts give to all sorts of weird things that occur during sleep. It happens when the brain temporarily disables the body to prevent it from acting out the vivid dreams occurring during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. It often comes with a feeling of immobility, and a sense of choking. The good news is, it’s absolutely normal, even if it’s terrifying.

But when sleep paralysis happens outside of deep sleep—when a person is just dozing off—it can be “disruptive of the architecture of sleep,” said Baland Jalal, a researcher who investigates the phenomenon. That could lead to more sleep paralysis.

While not everyone who has sleep paralysis experiences hallucinations(幻觉), seeing a person or a ghost in the room is the most common vision, said Jalal. The mechanisms behind sleep paralysis remain unclear, but research indicates that certain risk factors may increase the likelihood of experiencing a jerk, including extreme exercise before sleep, inadequate sleep, emotional stress and worry, and excessive stimulant consumption (like caffeine and nicotine), especially later in the day.

“For most people, it is not indicative of any kind of disease. If you are really worried about it, regular sleep and other simple relaxation techniques, like meditation, deep breathing and yoga, may help,” said Dr. Nathaniel Watson, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. While the experience feels frightening, the episodes last only a few seconds or minutes at most. Most people slip out of it as quickly as they fell into it, he said.

    【1】What is sleep paralysis?

A.A frightening dream that interrupts sleep.

B.A physical symptom of anxiety disorders.

C.A mental disease that affects sleep quality.

D.A brief state of being conscious but frozen.

【2】What do people who have sleep paralysis often experience?

    A.Involuntary cough.

    B.Unreal sensation.

    C.Sharpened vision.

    D.Sustained immobility.

【3】What does Dr. Nathaniel Watson say about sleep paralysis?

A.It is caused by inadequate sleep.

B.It can be a warning signal of diseases.

C.It is a temporary disturbing experience.

D.It can be prevented by extreme exercise.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A.Common Myths About Sleep Paralysis

B.Sleep Paralysis: How It Affects Sleep Patterns

C.Ways to Prevent and Cope with Sleep Paralysis

D.Sleep Paralysis: Why We Jerk Awake and Can’t Move

  • 24、For most caffeine(咖啡因)consumers, its chief benefit is that it helps you get more done. This is what makes it unusual, says Stephen Braun, author of Buzz: The Science and Lore of Alcohol and Caffeine.

“Its appeal is that it helps us earn more money,” he adds. “What makes it different from other drugs is that it’s used as a productivity tool –– not for pleasure.”

Many of history’s creative minds have also been associated with a large amount of caffeine consumption.

According to one biographer, the French novelist and playwright Balzac drank as many as 50 cups of coffee a day. “Were it not for coffee one could not write, which is to say one could not live,” he once insisted.

For seven years, the film-maker David Lynch ate at the same Los Angeles diner every day, drinking up to seven sweetened cups of coffee “with lots of sugar” in one sitting, which he said would guarantee that lots of ideas” arrived.

Ludwig van Beethoven was said to have painstakingly counted out exactly 60 coffee beans per cup when he brewed(煮)coffee.

Perhaps recent tales of caffeine excess featured the singer Robbie Williams, who reportedly consumed 36 cups of black coffee and 20 cans of Red Bull a day.

It is the routine task itself, as much as the stimulating(刺激的)effects of caffeine, that makes the process so important, says Mason Currey, author of Daily Rituals: How Artists Work. “A lot of artists use the process of making coffee as a gateway to the creative process,” he adds. “You need to get into the right mindset to do that sort of work, and the preparation process provides a focus.”

One problem with attempting to control caffeine, says Braun, is that it affects everyone differently –– it is impossible to work out a “safe” limit that works for everyone. “Eventually, you have to become your own scientist –– there isn’t an alternative to careful self-experimentation,” he says.

    【1】Stephen Braun mainly stresses caffeine’s _______.

    A. creating ideas   B. improving work efficiency

    C. helping people to relax   D. stimulating people

【2】The examples of some famous people are given to show that _______.

    A. most artists like drinking coffee

    B. drinking coffee helps artists make more money

    C. there’s a link between drinking coffee and creating ideas

    D. drinking coffee makes artists become more successful

【3】What leads to the artists’ creative process according to Mason Currey?

    A. Getting a good mindset.    B. Drinking the coffee.

    C. Being lost in thought. D. Brewing the coffee.

【4】What does Braun advise us to do in the end?

    A. To drink less coffee.

    B. Never to take more coffee than you need.

    C. Never to limit caffeine use.

    D. To work out a safe level of caffeine use.
