二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   If you asked people to name a famous psychology study, the “marshmallow (棉花糖) test” would probably come out near the top of the list. In this task, young children are told they can immediately get one marshmallow or wait to get two marshmallows. Researchers have shown that the ability to wait is associated with a range of positive life outcomes more than a decade later.

A new study published recently expands on this earlier research and shows that young children will wait nearly twice as long for a reward if they are told their teacher will find out how long they wait.

For their study, Heyman, the lead author on the study, and her colleagues conducted two experiments with a total of 273 children aged 3-4 years old. The researchers told the children that they could earn a small reward immediately or wait for a bigger one. Children were assigned to one of three conditions: a “teacher” condition, in which they were told that their teacher would find out how long they wait; a “peer” condition, in which they were told that a classmate would find out how long they wait; or a “standard” condition that had no special instructions.

Children waited longer in the teacher and peer condition than in the standard condition, and they waited about twice as long in the teacher condition as in the peer condition. The researchers were surprised at that because the traditional view is that 3- and 4-year-olds are too young to care about what other people think of them.

“The children waited longer even though no one directly told them that it’s good to wait longer,” said Heyman. “We believe that children are good at making these kinds of inferences because they pay close attention to what people around them value. This may take the form of carefully listening to the evaluative (评价性的) comments that parents and teachers make, or noticing what kinds of people and topics are getting attention in the media.”

1Why does the writer mention the “classic marshmallow test” in the beginning?

A.Because it is the basis of the new study.

B.Because it is the most famous psychology test.

C.Because it influences children’s life outcomes.

D.Because it reveals the link between wait and lifestyles.

2What does Paragraph 3 mainly explain about the experiments?

    A.The process. B.The purpose. C.The preparations. D.The results.

3How did the researchers feel about the findings according to the text?

    A.Unexpected. B.Disappointed. C.Overjoyed. D.Doubtful.

4What might be the conclusion of the experiments?

    A.Bigger rewards motivate human behavior.

B.The awareness of comments from others starts earlier.

C.Young children have a stronger desire to impress others.

D.The older children are, the better they control themselves.

  • 22、Every year on April 1, April Fools’ Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. In France, it’s called “Poisson d’Avril” or “Fish of April.” In Scotland, the holiday is often called “Gowkie Day.” In Iraq, the holiday is called Kithbet Neesan or “April Lie.”

History experts say people have celebrated April Fools’ Day for a long time. Some believe the tradition comes from the ancient Romans more than two thousand years ago. It was a day of playing games and pretending to be someone else.

Others say the day for fooling began in France in 1564, when King Charles changed the yearly calendar. He moved New Year’s Day from April 1 to January 1. Many people did not know about the change because of communication problems back then. Some people continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1. Other people called them April Fools and played jokes on them.

In the United States, April Fools’ Day is just a day of joking and playing tricks on friends. These kinds of jokes are also called pranks. These jokes typically end in the prankster shouting “April Fools’!”

Simple pranks, like telling a friend a funny lie or making prank phone calls, are still common. But, major companies also get in on April Fools’ Day fun in a much bigger way. A few years ago, on April 1, Starbucks announced it was introducing new coffee cup sizes -- Plenta and Micra. The very large cups, bigger than a human head, remained useful for customers even after finishing all that coffee. According to Starbucks, the cups could be used as a rain hat, a pot for plants, or a lampshade.

It did not take long for customers to catch on to the prank! More and more people use social media or smart phone apps to play pranks on their friends on April Fools’ Day. One very annoying smart phone app, Cat Facts, sends funny facts about cats to your friends’ phones, every day.

1Why did some people keep the old New Year’s Day?

    A. It was known only by the government.

    B. They wanted to be different from others.

    C. They like the old celebration.

    D. They didn’t know the time changed.

    2Americans celebrated April Fool’s Day to _________.

    A. improve the friendship between friends.

    B. have fun and play jokes on others.

    C. find a chance to give children gifts.

    D. escape the stress of their work.

3What is the meaning of the underlined words “get in on” in Paragraph 5?

    A. participate in.   B. turn down.

    C. break away from.   D. give up.

4What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?

    A. To introduce a new festival.

    B. To tell a story on April Fool’s Day.

    C. To introduce April Fool’s Day.

    D. To express love to the friends.

  • 23、   The mind is a wonderful thing. It’s also excuse-making machine that frequently tries to convince us not to take action we know are good for us.If we hadn't learned about these excuses, or how to overcome them, we would never have succeeded in making these positive changes.

So why does the mind mess with us and make unreasonable excuses? Because the mind wants comfort, that's the reason. It’s afraid of discomfort, pressure and change. The mind is absorbed in its comfort zone, and anytime we try to stretch that zone too far, for too long, the mind tries desperately to get back to "ground zero" at any cost. These damaging excuses, such as "I can't do it", "It is too hard for me", "It’s too late now" and so on, are no strangers to our minds.

It seems too difficult at first, so you think you can't stick to the positive change you're making. This excuse can be countered (对抗)by looking at the fact that other people were no more capable than you thought you were. For example, my 60-year-old next-door neighbor finished running a marathon, so I told myself, "If she can do it, so can I !" Truth be told, the only person who tells you "I can't" is yourself. If you hear those words echoing in the back of your mind, tune them out.

I've witnessed people reinventing themselves at all ages 48-year-olds starting families, 57-year-olds graduating from college for the first time, 71-year-olds starting successful businesses, and so forth.

Another common excuse is that "I've already failed too much." If you break down, it's fine, because you are only human.Just don't stay down; take a rest, and then pick yourself up so you can go to where you'd rather be.As Winston Churchill said, "Success is never final; failure is never fatal .It is courage to continue that counts."

Some people feel like quitting when they have almost reached their goal, while others attain  goals through their efforts until the last second. So make some necessary adjustments to get rid of the bad habit of making excuses.Keep going! No excuses! Think, work, and climb, that's how you'll move your life forward.

1Why does our mind make excuses?

A.It tends to seek comforts rather than suffering.

B.It needs rest and relaxation .

C.It is preparing for the difficult times.

D.It is the way it tries to find a solution.

2What might "ground zero" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The lowest spot. B.The safest place

C.The original place D.The proper position

3Knowing his neighbor finished the marathon made the author realize________.

A.completing a marathon was not too difficult

    B.people often neglect their abilities

C.looking down upon the others is wrong

D.people shouldn't let negative thoughts step in their way

4For someone who fears failure, the author advises him to_______.

    A.learn from those good examples

B.stop for a while and examine himself

C.try to adjust himself, and get back on his feet

D.look for new directions and keep trying

5What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?

A.To tell readers how to make a change.

B.To help readers develop a new view of life.

C.To encourage readers to leave their comfortable zone.

D.To tell readers to stop making excuses and keep fighting.

  • 24、Nature is all about relationships: the interconnected links between the living and lifeless, and how they harmonize beautifully into a whole that might not be immediately apparent to us humans, as the complexities of the world sometimes escape the grasp of our relatively short-sighted understanding. Perhaps that's why the urgency of the climate crisis and other environ-mental issues don't truly hit home for some; because that important data is presented in a dry, factual way that doesn't touch the deeper parts of our collective soul, in a way that would move us to realize what is being lost.

Clare Celeste is an environmentally-minded artist creating artworks that aim to highlight the precious biodiversity of the planet. Using paper that is complexly cut and then hand-assembled piece by piece, Celeste forms imaginary landscapes of plants and animals that are folded or pressed between glass.

Growing up in Brazil, Celeste says that her earliest childhood memories were of green, tropical ecosystems slowly being eaten up by the rapid expansion of nearby cities.

Celeste said, “When I made a series of combinations, I realized that many of the species in the illustrations had already gone extinct. Humans have wiped out 68 percent of all our planet's biodiversity since 1970, so working with old illustrations can be very heartbreaking as much of the diversity in these beautiful old illustrations has been wiped out by human activities.”

Celeste explains some of the motivations behind this series of paper works: “I wanted to convey the beauty of our planet's plants and animals, while also introducing a more architectural or human-made element with the geometric (几何图形的) patterns. Having grown up in Brazil, I was surrounded by dense urban spaces that often had rich jungle growth just wanting to break through the concrete architecture. I suggest we go back to our love: our love of nature, of our children, of future generations. Because when we love something deeply, we are required to act—to save it when it is threatened.”

【1】What can we infer from the first paragraph?

A.People are connected with each other.

B.People find data on nature boring to study.

C.People can't solve the climate crisis on their own.

D.People don't fully understand environmental issues.

【2】What did Celeste remember about her childhood?

A.Cities were rich in green plants.

    B.Buildings were decorated with plants.

    C.Urbanization destroyed the local biodiversity.

D.Nature was a mixture of natural artworks.

【3】What can be inferred from Celeste's words in paragraph 4?

A.Most species die without adapting to environment.

B.Humans feel painful at the loss of species.

C.Her paper cuts represent the extinction of species.

D.Human activities have severely damaged biodiversity.

【4】What motivates Celeste to create her works?

A.The desire to protect the biodiversity.

B.The desire for a good childhood memory.

    C.The idea of imagining landscapes.

D.The hope of preserving natural beauty.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When starting my sixth-grade year, I was nervous about many things. But nothing compared to the problem that I got to the age where my voice started changing. At first, the voice getting deep excited me. But then I learned before getting deeper, it can crack (变嘶哑).

The first time it happened I was so embarrassed. Surprisingly, my friends didn’t make fun of me. In fact, they didn’t even mention it. But in my self-conscious sixth-grade mind I was certain they made fun of me behind my back. They weren’t having the same problem.

After my first voice crack experience, I was determined to make sure it wouldn’t happen again. At least not in public. So, except for strategic times I said, “cool” and “yeah”, I didn’t talk. My logic was, “If I don’t use my voice, it cannot crack.” However, I couldn’t go without talking forever. I needed a new solution.

I began clearing my throat before speaking, which actually seemed to help. Limiting how much I spoke and clearing my voice made me much less stressful. This was great but there was a larger problem. I was much more scared about having a voice crack during class. My class had many new kids I’d never spoken with. I didn’t want their first impressions of me to be based on a voice crack.

Unfortunately, one day my concern came true. It was about two months after the beginning of the term. On the day it happened everything was the same as always until I got into the classroom. I noticed that we had a substitute teacher (代课老师) and immediately started thinking about how he would take attendance. My permanent teacher never had to, since he already knew each student, I panicked. So many thoughts rushed through my mind that I couldn’t think straight. I calmed myself down by telling myself that I only had to say one word “Here”. “Easy enough, right?” I thought so until my name was called. I did my routine — cleared my throat, took a breath, and said, “Here.” The only problem was that while saying this, I had the worst voice crack in the history of voice cracks.
