21、I am Peter Hodes, a volunteer stem cell courier. Since March 2012, I’ve done 89 trips -— of those, 51 have been abroad, I have 42 hours to carry stem cells (干细胞) in my little box because I’ve got two ice packs and that’s how long they last. In all, from the time the stem cells are harvested from a donor to the time they can be implanted in the patient, we’ve got 72 hours at most. So I am always conscious of time.
I had one trip last year where I was caught by a hurricane in America. I picked up the stem cells in Providence, Rhode Island, and was meant to fly to Washington then back to London. But when I arrived at the check-in desk at Providence, the lady on the desk said: “Well, I’m really sorry, I’ve got some bad news for you — there are no flights from Washington.” So I took my box and put it on the desk and I said: “In this box are some stem cells that are urgently needed for a patient — please, please, you’ve got to get me back to the United Kingdom.” She just dropped everything. She arranged for a flight on a small plane to be held for me, re-routed (改道) me through Newark and got me back to the UK even earlier than originally scheduled.
For this courier job, you’re consciously aware that in that box you’ve got something that is potentially going to save somebody’s life.

23、After years of intense public pushback, the Ringling Bros, and Barnum & Bailey Circus finally announced the retirement of their Asian elephant performers in 2016. While the decision was a victory for animal lovers and activists, it raised a new issue. The elephants were raised in a small closed area and lacked the skills to survive in the wild. Now, thanks to Florida-based White Oak Conservation, the animals have a new home-one where they can wander freely.
Located about 30 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida, the 17, 000-acre(英亩) facility is home to between 350 and 400 animals including 35 endangered species. The conservation center welcomed the first group of retired circus elephants in May 2021. The 12 female elephants range from 8 to 38 years old. To make the move easier, they were socialized together for several months before they came to the center. The animals will be joined by the remaining 20 as soon as the additional areas to house them are completed.
The elephants’ new home is modeled after the elephant’s natural habitat in the wild. The diverse environments include forests, grassland and wetlands, all connected for easy passage by foot. The elephants can wander in the woods, relax in the mud, or swim in one of the eleven specially-built water holes. The elephants can also spend their days relaxing inside the specially-built barns(畜棚)close to their human caregivers.
"We are excited to give these elephants a place to wander and explore," said the conservation center’s owner Kimbra Walter. "We are working to protect wild animals in their native habitat. But for these elephants that can’t be released, we are pleased to give them a place where they can live comfortably for the rest of their lives."

A.They are still locked.
B.They lack natural habitat.
C.They are unable to live in the wild.
D.They are in danger of being caught.

A.It is transformed from a circus.
B.It houses over 300 elephants.
C.The retired elephants are its first residents.
D.Some part of it is still under construction.
【3】What’s the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The reserve’s efforts to protect the animals.
B.The elephants’ new life in the natural habitat.
C.The environment of the elephants’ new home.
D.The daily activities of the animals in the reserve.
【4】What does Kimbra Walter think of their effort to protect the animals?
A.It’s unique.
B.It’s suitable.
C.It’s helpless.
D.It’s temporary.
24、There is increasing alarm about the extent of microplastic pollution, which has been found everywhere from Everest to the Arctic. However, it turns out there’s an even smaller and more toxic form of plastic pollution entering remote reaches of the globe. A new study published in Environmental Research found significant quantities of nanoplastics in ice samples from both the North and South Poles.
“Now we know that nanoplastics are transported to these corners of the Earth in these quantities. This indicates that nanoplastics are really a bigger pollution problem than we thought,” study lead author Dusan Materic said in a press release.
Nanoplastics are plastics that are smaller than a micrometer in size. Their small size means they are more difficult to study than microplastics, or plastics between five millimeters and a micrometer. But they may be even more dangerous.
“Nanoplastics are very toxicologically (毒理学地) active compared to, for instance, microplastics, and that’s why this is very important,” Materic said.
Materic and his team used new methods to measure nanoplastic pollution in ice samples from Greenland and Antarctica. They sampled a 14-meter-deep ice core from the Greenland ice cap and sea ice from Antarctica’s McMurdo Sound. They found that there were an average of 13.2 nanograms per milliliter of nanoplastics in the Greenland ice and an average of 52.3 nanograms per milliliter in the Antarctic ice.
But what was even more surprising than the amount of nanoplastics in the remote ice was just how long they had sat there. “In the Greenland core, we see nanoplastic pollution happening all the way from the 1960s. So organisms in that region, despite the lack of the solid evidence, likely all over the world, have been exposed to it for quite some time now,” Materic said.
The study also looked at the types of plastic present in the samples. Half of the Greenland nanoplastics were polyethylene (PE), the kind of plastic used for plastic bags and packaging. A quarter came from tires and a fifth were polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used for clothing and bottles.
【1】Why should researchers focus more on nanoplastics?
A.They are more important to science.
B.They are smaller but more dangerous.
C.They are easily polluted by ocean water.
D.They are more active in cold surroundings.
【2】What can we learn about nanoplastics?
A.The North and South poles are the birthplace of nanoplastics.
B.Kanoplastics have less influence on the planet than microplastics.
C.Nanoplastics found in the samples are widely used in the daily life.
D.Nanoplastics have been existing since the 1960s throughout the world.
【3】What does the underlined word ‘that region’ refer to in Para 6?
A.Greenland ice cap.
B.Antarctica’s McMurdo.
C.The south and north poles.
D.All places in the world.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Mircoplastics—proving more dangerous.

C.Nanoplastics—posing a threat to people’s life.
D.Mircoplastics—setting the alarm bells ringing.

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Can Birdsong Make You Happier?
If you are able to step outside and hear many types of birds, you might also have a greater feeling of well-being. Two studies show that hearing diverse birdsongs may help increase our happiness.
One study was done by the researchers at California Polytechnic State University. The team studied the effects of birdsong on people walking through a park in the U.S. state of Colorado. Danielle Ferraro, who led the Cal Poly study, says that there could be an evolutionary reason why we like birdsong. The idea is that when we hear birdsong it could signal safety to us. There could be many other reasons too Ferraro states that in some areas around the world birdsong can also signal the arrival of spring and nice weather. Bird diversity, she adds, can also mean a healthy environment.
Similarly, scientists in Germany examined for the first time whether a diverse nature also increases human well-being across Europe. The researchers looked at the European Quality of Life Survey to study the connection between the different kinds of birds in their surroundings and life satisfaction. They looked at more than 26,000 adults from 26 European countries. “Europeans are particularly satisfied with their lives if their surroundings have a high species diversity,” explains the study’s lead author, Joel Methorst, a researcher at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. He and his team found that the happiest Europeans are those who can experience many different kinds of birds in their daily life, or who live in near-natural surroundings that are home to many species.
So, if birdsong is good for our mental health, how can we increase the different types of birdsongs we hear? Scientists also mentioned, “We would recommend planting native trees and flowers because we have a lot of pretty decorative plants in our cities. And they might look nice to us, but birds can’t necessarily use them. So, we think it important to have species that are native to the area to increase bird diversity.”
