二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Flickering lights are annoying but they may have an advantage. Visible light communication (VLC) uses rapid pluses of light to transmit information wirelessly. Now it may be ready to compete with conventional Wi-fi.

In a recent TED talk, Harald Hasas from the University of Edinburge,UK demonstrated one VLC prototype(原型),“Li-Fi", transmitting a video from a store-bought LED lamp to a solar cell to a laptop. “Li-Fi is essentially the same as Wi-Fi,except for a small difference- we use LED lights around us to transmit the data wirelessly as opposed to using radio," Haas says.

Once established, VLC could solve some major communication problems. In 2009, the US Federal Communications Commission(FCC) warned of spectrum (波谱)crisis: because our mobile devices are so data- hungry we will soon run out of radio-frequency bandwidth.Li-Fi could free up bandwidth, especially as much of the infrastructure is already in place."There are around14 billion light bulbs worldwide, they just need to replaced with LED ones that transmit data", says Haas.

The idea of transmitting data through the visible light spectrum is not new.Alexander Graham Bell transmitted sound via a beam of sunlight in 1880 using a photo phone, a sort of solar-powered wireless telephone. In the past several decades, a number of researchers have looked at using visible light to transmit data.

But what Haas seized on is the use of simple LED light bulbs for data transmission. LED bulbs are controlled by a driver, which can rapidly di the light or turn it on or off. Therefore, Haas figured, data could be encoded in subtle shifts of the light’s brightness. Eventually, he creaded a working transmitter and receiver system with an IKEA lamp and a solar panel.

Li-Fi stands to be much faster than Wi-Fi. According to Haas research, Li-Fi can achieve data density 1000 times greater than Wi-Fi,because Li-Fi signals are contained in a small area, as opposed to the more diffuse (分散的),radio signals. The system wouldn’t mean having to keep your lights on all the time either, Haas says---bulbs could be dimmed to such a point that they appear off, but still transmit data.

Now, Haas’ team hopes that Li-Fi could make its way into homes in a few years. The system can easily network any device with an LED light—an electric kettle, an oven. Eventually, this could bring about the Internet of Things era much faster. Haas also  sees Li-Fi as a way to bring internet to remote location, using hilltop transmitters and rooftop solar panels. LED streetlights could even be used to form a network of outdoor Li-Fi, making it possible to stay connected when walking around the city.

But some sound a cautious note about VLC’s future. It becomes less powerful , for example, when light is blocked, wheather due to fog or other conditions.

【1】By saying "There are around14 billion light bulbs worldwide”Haas intended to tell us that  ______________

    A. mobile devices will consume more data

    B. radio-frequency bandwidth needs to be freed up.

    C. VLC might solve the spectum crisis.

    D. the world has a complete lighting infrastructure.

【2The underlined phrased “seized on“ in the passage is closet in meaning to “_____________”

    A distinguished   B. exploited  C.  created   D. figured

【3We can learn from the passage that ________________________

    A. Li-Fi can’t work outdoors.

B Li-Fi can work with LED lights off.

    C. Li-Fi can be used with all household appliances.

    D. Li-Fi needs improving to next diverse need.

  • 22、Brittany McGuire never expected TikTok to have such a life-changing influence on her life, but with 3.4 million followers and the kind of relationship she’s always wanted with her brother, that’s exactly what happened.

When she was a child, it was difficult for Brittany to relate to her autistic (患自闭症的) brother, Ryan. “Growing up, I didn’t understand how to relate to him,” Brittany said. “He loves sports—he is a walking encyclopedia (百科全书) of sports. I would try to talk about sports, but I knew so little and he knew so much. At times, I felt like a bad sister because I couldn’t connect to him.”

When Brittany first joined TikTok, she didn’t have any plans to include Ryan in them. Then, a single video changed everything. One day, Brittany decided to put on a skincare face mask, leaving her with a pink, unusual looking complexion that Ryan didn’t like. She found his reaction amusing, so she decided to share it, thinking that others would agree ... and she was right! The video went viral!

As fun as it was for Brittany to see everyone appreciating Ryan’s reaction, it also sparked conversations around autism (自闭症) .“Many people ask what’s wrong with Ryan and my reaction is to say that nothing is wrong with him without getting angry,” she said. “I think most people are curious about Ryan and autism. So we help them gain a better understanding by posting videos.”

One important message that Ryan hopes people remember is that autism is a disorder not an illness. He says, “Autism is how the brain functions.” In other words, just his brain works differently, which doesn’t make him less valuable than anyone else. In sharing these moments with Ryan, whether they’re serious and educational or fun and silly, Brittany herself has come to better understand her brother.

“Through TikTok, Ryan shares his story with the world and helps others better understand autistic people,” Brittany said. “But for me, having something we do together that helps us bond and spend time together is priceless and what I always hope is that we can share.”

【1】Why did Brittany think of herself a bad sister?

    A.She suffered from autism.

    B.She knew nothing about sports.

C.It was sad for her to have a sick brother.

D.It was difficult for her to communicate with Ryan.

【2】What brought changes to Brittany and Ryan’s life?

    A.A video shared on TikTok.

    B.The invention of TikTok.

    C.Ryan’s funny reaction.

    D.A skincare face mask.

【3】What does Brittany think of people’s question in paragraph 4?

    A.Upsetting

    B.Understandable

    C.Regretful

    D.Disappointing

【4】What can be inferred from paragraph 5?

A.Autism is a kind of serious disease.

B.People with autism have complex feelings.

C.Brittany loves her brother more after he got sick.

D.Brittany and Ryan make people learn more about autism.

  • 23、This winter, the U. S. state of California received unusually large amounts of rain and snow. Now, people worry that some areas will flood as the snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains melts (融化).

Ron Caetano lives about half-way between the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco. He is preparing to leave in case his community, called the Island District, floods.

More than 100 years ago, the Island District area was under a large lake named Tulare Lake. At one time, Tulare Lake was the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. But reservoirs (水库) and watering systems for agriculture caused it to disappear. However, in very rainy years, farmland can still get covered with water.

Experts say reservoirs near the area will likely receive three times more water than they can hold this year. That means officials must increase the amount of water they release (释放) from the reservoirs. If too much water is released, the area might flood.

The Island District has organized a community network to help prepare for floods. People are placing sandbags close to elderly neighbors’ houses to block possible flooding. And they are looking at reports from water officials, county officials, and from each other.

California has had very dry weather in recent years. Both cities and farm communities acclaimed this year’s winter rains. If the weather gets warmer slowly, the snow will not melt quickly and there may be little or no flooding. But if the weather gets hot quickly, that will bring trouble from too much melting snow.

Officials announced plans to close parts of Yosemite National Park because of threats of flooding. The park is about 270 kilometers east of San Francisco in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Nicholas Pinter is with the University of California, Davis Center for Watershed Sciences. He said the lake’s size has always changed because of California’s weather. He described the surrounding area this way. “It has been an engineering problem all along,” he said. “This is a bathtub (浴缸) with no way out.”

    【1】What made Tulare Lake disappear?

    A.Lack of rainfall.

    B.Natural disasters.

    C.Human behaviors.

    D.Climate warming.

【2】What does the underlined word “acclaimed” mean in paragraph 6?

    A.Feared.

    B.Prevented.

    C.Stored.

    D.Welcomed.

【3】What might people of California hope to happen?

A.The government can help them escape.

B.The weather will gradually get warm.

C.There will be more rain there.

    D.Officials won’t let off water.

【4】What can we infer from Nicholas Pinter’s words?

A.It is difficult to deal with the flood.

B.It is easy to keep the snow water.

C.The surrounding area is unfit to live.

    D.The lake is already overflowing.

Penguin’s Who Was? series tells the incredible stories of trailblazers (开拓者), legends, innovators, and creators. The following are frequently asked questions:

How many Who Was? titles are there?

About 250 Who Was? titles have been published since the series first began 20 years ago. And with the addition of the What Was? and Where Is? series, readers now have more than 300 amazing books about influential people, world-famous landmarks, and interesting historical events.

How do you choose the subjects for the Who Was? titles?

The subjects for the Who Was? series are often decided quite far in advance. People who are the first at something, or the best at what they do, or who have made major contributions in their field—and sometimes all three—make the best subjects.

What was the first Who Was? book?

The first four Who Was? books—Who Was Sacagawea?, Who Was Ben Franklin?, Who Was Albert Einstein?, and Who Was Annie Oakley2—were actually published on the same day. So when February 18 rolls around, be sure to wish these books a Happy Birthday!

Does the same person illustrate every cover?

Just about every Who Was? cover (except two)is illustrated by Nancy Harrison, who has been working on the series since the very first book.

How long does it take to complete one book?

It can take years! And sometimes the books are finished much more quickly. From the time an author is contracted to write the manuscript, through editing, copy editing, design and illustration, to publication, it takes—on average—eighteen to twenty-four months.

【1】How many Who Was? books are published every year on average?

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I was 8 years old then. I had little need of luggage. But something about my grandma's old leather suitcase, which had been there beneath my bed, appealed to my imagination.

There was an elegance in the chestnut-brown leather of the suitcase. The cracked handle felt firm in my grip and made me feel like I was going to places. But I didn't use the old suitcase before that day.

It was a fall morning in our North Carolina town, and a fine mist dampened the fallen leaves. I was angry. My mother had slighted (冷落) me somehow, though now I have no idea what sparked my anger. I wanted to make her pay. I wanted to give her a taste of what life would be like without me. I decided to run away.

“Goodbye, Mom. ” I stood outside the kitchen door, suitcase firmly in hand. I was serious.

“Goodbye, Mom,” I repeated twice more, cracking open the swinging door with my foot the final time to make sure she'd heard. At last, Mom emerged, wiping her hands on a dish towel. I lifted the suitcase a little just to make sure she didn't miss it.

“I’m leaving home,” I said. I'd rehearsed for the expected reaction. The plan was to let her suffer guilt and beg for a minute or two, and then I would agree to stay.

“Did you pack a lunch?” Mom's question knocked me off balance. Where were the tears? The begging? The pleas? “I said I'm leaving,” I said. “I'm running away. For Ever!” I drew out the dreaded words, sure they would crack her down.

Instead, she smiled. “Well, would you like me to fix you something? A sandwich? A bag of chips? I just made chocolate chip cookies. ”

    “I'm really going,” I said.

    “I can see that.”

“Maybe a cookie.” I hesitated, “All right, I’m off. ” As I stepped onto the front walk, fresh-baked chocolate chip tucked in my coat pocket, I looked back at our big yellow house.

Surely, she would follow me. I stared at the front door, waiting for it to fling open. I watched the lace curtains in the living room window for movement. But, no! Not even a flicker of a curtain! My mother didn’t care if I ran away. Had she ever loved me at all?

    注意:
