21、When the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), the world’s governing body for soccer, claimed that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar would be “a fully carbon-neutral (碳中和) event”, it attracted worldwide laughter from the environmentalists.
World Cup hosts often maintain that stadiums built for the event will remain in constant use after its conclusion—a claim that allows them to spread their carbon footprint over many years. But it’s hard to believe the claim. After all, Qatari soccer culture is still undeveloped. Even soccer- mad countries such as Russia, Brazil and South Africa-hosts of the previous three men’s World Cups-have been left with a group of relatively useless stadiums.
In addition to the carbon cost of the stadiums, Qatar expects to see 1, 300 daily flights to and from the country during the World Cup. But that’s not the only source of airplane emissions. The grass seeds to give rise to the tournament’s green pitches (球场) have been flown in from North America on climate-controlled planes. And these fields won’t water themselves. The groundskeepers who maintain the eight stadium pitches, as well as the 136 practice fields, douse each field with 10, 000 liters of water every day in the winter. In the summer the pitches require a surprising amount of 50, 000 liters each.
Soccer isn’t alone in this. Three recent Olympics-Tokyo 2020, Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Sochi 2014-earned some of the worst environmental sustainability scores. All this raises an important question: Is it even possible to stage a carbon-neutral sports mega event? The ever- expanding size of these events likely puts net-zero emissions out of reach. One recent study found that between 1964 and 2018, the soccer World Cup and the Olympics were about 60 times as large in terms of the number of sports, athletes, journalists, spectators, marketing and costs involved.
The large sports events, as they are currently organized, are unsustainable. Since FIFA and the International Olympic Committee made more environmental claims back in the 1990s, their events have only become bigger, and their effects have only become more severe.

A.Critical.
B.Mixed.

22、Then comes the July, and with it are examinations; but these are soon finished and with them ends the school year. Boys and girls have nearly two months holiday before them as they leave school by train and car to return home to their fathers and mothers.
The summer holidays are the best part of the year for most children. The weather is usually good, so that one can spend most of one’s time playing in the garden or, if one lives in the country, out in the woods and fields. Even if one lives in a big town, one can usually go to the park to play.
The best place for a summer holiday, however, is the seaside. Some children are lucky enough to live near the sea, but for others who do not, a week or two at one of the big seaside towns is something which they will talk about for the whole of the following year.
In England, it is not only the rich who can take their children to the seaside; if a factory worker or a bus driver, a street cleaner or a waiter wants to take his wife and children to Southend or Margate, Blackpool or Clacton, he is usually quite able to do so.
Now, why do children like so much about the seaside? I think it is the sand, sea and sun more than any other things. Of course, there are lots of new things to see, nice things to eat, and exciting things to do, but it is the feeling of sand under one’s feet, of salt water on one’s skin, and of the warm sun on one’s skin, and of the warm sun on one’s back that make the seaside what it is.
【1】Summer holidays start _______.
A. with July B. as soon as the examinations are over
C. in mid----June D. in August
【2】After the examinations, all the pupils leave for home -_____.
A. by train only B. by car

23、Many Android and iPhone owners use Google services on their mobile phones or tablets. One of the most widely used location services is Google Maps. When someone uses Google Maps, information about times and locations is recorded and stored.
Google also uses tracking tools with other services. Weather apps, for example, are designed to identify a user’s location to provide local weather information. Even some Google Internet searches can result in the collection of information about exactly where a person was when the search was made.
Google says it collects the data to improve users’ localized experiences. But such practices have also raised privacy concerns. Privacy activists have called on Google and other major technology companies to make it easier for users to turn off location services if they do not want to be tracked. In some ways, Google is clear about asking permission to use location information. For instance, Google Maps will seek approval from a user to give the app access to locations. If a user agrees to let Google collect location information over time, Google Maps will show this history in a “timeline” that shows the person’s daily movements.
Google also has a “Location History” setting. The company says any user can turn off Location History at any time. And when Location History is turned off for a user’s account, it is turned off for all equipment linked to that Google account. But the AP (Associated Press) found this does not appear to be true, finding that Google continued to save location history even if a user had turned off Location History.
Google states users can stop the saving of all location markers by turning off another setting, however, which is not clearly identified as being connected to location tracking. The setting is called “Web and App Activity”. It stores different kinds of information from Google apps and websites to a user’s Google account.
【1】Why does the author mention Weather apps?
A.To advise people to stop using them.
B.To stress Google services are widely used.
C.To prove Google collects users’ data illegally.
D.To show many apps can track a user’s location.
【2】What is the voice from the privacy activists?
A.Users should use the Internet less.
B.Google should stop tracking users.
C.Google should respect users’ privacy.
D.Google should turn off location services.
【3】What does the author indicate in paragraph 4?
A.The Location History setting is difficult to find.
B.The AP asks Google to remove Location History.
C.Turning off Location History can avoid being tracked.
D.What Google announces is hardly consistent with the fact.
【4】Which can best summarize the passage?
A.Using Google puts you into a dangerous state.
B.Google services urgently need to get improved.
C.Google still tracks you with Location History off.
D.Web and App Activity has endangered people’s life.
24、Tuna sashimi may be tasty but every bite comes with a high body count: the millions of sharks killed each year when they’re accidentally caught by industrial fishing vessels. Now a new technology has shown promising results in sharply reducing the killing of a top predator key to keeping ocean ecosystems healthy.
The cylindrical (圆柱形的) device, called SharkGuard, was developed by Eishtek Marine, a UK company in 2020. The SharkGuard capsule is attached to a baited fishing hook. It contains a battery-powered capacitor that generates a three-dimensional electric field, which can be sensed by sharks. The electrical pulse overstimulates the animal’s electroreceptors that it uses to locate prey, and shocks the shark away from the hook.
In July and August 2021, two vessels fishing for bluefin tuna off the south coast of France tested SharkGuard on hundreds of baited hooks. During the trials, “bycatch” of blue sharks per 1, 000 hooks fell by 91. 3%.
An estimated 100 million sharks are killed annually by commercial fisheries and shark populations have fallen 71% since 1970, according to scientists.
“I see this as being potentially a game-changer,” said Rachel Graham, a marine scientist. “The use of these instruments will be very helpful for companies to be able to label their tuna or their other target species as being ‘shark safe’, like they do with dolphin-safe tuna.”
However, the current version of the device has its limitations and it is not yet commercially available. The battery must be changed after 65 hours, which would not be feasible for vessels that deploy thousands of hooks on fishing lines that can stretch for miles,
A solution, though, is under development. Fishtek has obtained funding from the government to create an induction (电磁感应) charging system that would be built into the bins that store longline hooks. When the hooks are reeled in, they would dock in a charging cup and be fully powered for the next deployment.
