二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When the swim season began, my 11-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, and I cut a deal. She would go to practice three times a week, and I wouldn’t make her compete in swim meets.

Elizabeth does not like swim meets, she gets horribly nervous because she is afraid that she will do something wrong and let everyone down. she started to talk about quitting swimming, which broke my heart because she loves swimming. So I came up with the deal.

Recently, Elizabeth’s team announced a T-shirt relay, which works like this: One person from each relay team puts on a T-shirt and a pair of socks and swims 50 meters. She takes off the clothes and put them on the next person, who then swims 50 meters. This continues until everyone on the team has completed a lap.

It wasn’t exactly a meet, because it would involve only team members. But Elizabeth thought it was. I told Elizabeth I really wanted her to go. She fought back angrily but finally agreed.

When the day for the T-shirt relay arrived, Elizabeth was nervous. She was chosen to swim the anchor leg (最后一棒).By the last leg, Elizabeth’s team had built up a narrow lead. Then it was Elizabeth’s turn to swim.

Approaching the halfway mark, she was still in the lead. Then somebody noticed that one of  Elizabeth’s socks had fallen off and was floating in the pool. “She has to get that sock on before the end of the race,” a swimming official told Elizabeth’s team,“ or you will be disqualified.”

Everybody on her team started shouting, “Elizabeth! Get the sock!” But she couldn’t hear them. Meanwhile, a girl in lane two was gaining on Elizabeth. Just then, a girl on my daughter’s team jumped in the pool, grabbed the sock, swam after Elizabeth and put the sock on Elizabeth.

With the sock finally on, Elizabeth swam her heart out for the last 15 meters and won! There was much celebration. And, for a few minutes, Elizabeth was the hero.

On the ride home, she relived her moment of glory again and again. She told me that if the T-shirt relay was an Olympic event, her team would win the gold medal, I told her that in my professional opinion, she Was absolutely right.

【1】 What do we know about the T-shirt relay?

    A. Elizabeth was eager to attend it.

    C. Elizabeth thought she was sure to fail the relay.

    D. Elizabeth agreed to attend it after a lot of persuasion.

【2】 What happened to Elizabeth when she was swimming the anchor leg?

    A. The girl on the other team swam faster than her.

    B. She was disqualified for breaking the rule.

    C. She was too nervous to swim.

    D. One of her socks fell off.

【3】We can infer from the last paragraph that Elizabeth_____.

    A. believed she was the best of her team.

    B. Hoped to take part in the Olympics.

    C. Overcame her fear of swim meets.

    D. Was grateful for the girl’s help.

【4】 What would be the best title for the text?

  • 22、Here’s something that might make you feel a little better the next time you have a serious case of hanger - you’re not being irrational or unreasonable, it’s just science.

The concept of being ‘hangry’ - angry because you’re hungry - comes up among ScienceAlert staff. But there’s nothing wrong with being hangry - there’s a scientific reason why having low blood sugar can make some people aggressive.

According to a study published earlier this year, blood sugar levels directly related to how married couples were likely to treat each other.Working with 107 couples over three weeks, the researchers, led by psychologist Brad Bushman from the Ohio State University in the US, found that when individuals experienced lower than usual blood sugar levels, they became increasingly aggressive and mean towards their significant others.

This was measured through the use of a good old-fashioned voodoo doll the volunteers were each given one, along with 51 pins, to represent their spouse-a partner in marriage. Each person’s aggressive impulses(冲动)were then measured based on how many pins they stuck into their spouse-dolls every night throughout the experiment.

Aggression, on the other hand, was measured by volunteers blasting(炮轰)their spouse with a loud and unpleasant noise in the headphones they had to wear.

Turns out that the volunteers who experienced the lowest blood sugar levels stuck more pins into their voodoo dolls, and forced louder and longer blasts of noise on their spouses than those who had plenty of glucose(葡萄糖) in their system.

"People are often the most aggressive against the people to whom they are closest intimate partners,” the researchers concluded."Intimate partner violence might be partly a result of poor self-control.Self-control of aggressive impulses requires energy, and much of this energy is provided by glucose from the food we eat."

As Susannah Locke explains at Vox, glucose is the only molecule(分子) that our brains will accept as fuel. This means, quite simply, that when we’re not producing enough glucose, our brains won’t function properly. It also means that we lack the energy we need to maintain self-control, which is why we’re more likely to hit or criticize others suddenly in an uncharacteristic manner when we haven’t eaten in a while.

【1】According the passage, what can make you feel better?

A.Knowing that your are being irrational.

B.Knowing that your are being angry

C.Knowing that you are being hungry

D.Knowing that you are angry for a reason.

【2】How did the researchers get the final result of the experiments in various ways?

A.By making good use of a doll to represent their spouse.

B.By using voodoo dolls , pins and headphones to measure their aggression.

C.By measuring aggression based on how many pins they stuck into their dolls

D.By measuring aggressive impulses in terms of their blasting their spouse with a noise.

【3】Which of the following is right according to Susannah Locke?

    A.Glucose is our brain's fuel.

B.We lack energy to control ourselves.

    C. Without glucose, our brain will function properly.

D.We are more likely to lose control if we produce enough glucose.

【4】From the passage, in which condition will you be more likely to feel angry?

A.At 8:00 a.m, you are driving a car alone after having breakfast.

B.At 11.00 a.m, you are in your office with colleagues waiting for the lunch.

C.At 5:00 p.m, you are cleaning the house at home while your wife is cooking.

D.At 6:00 p.m, you are taking a walk with your family after having dinner.

【5】What did researchers conclude from the research?

A.Lower blood sugar level had less pins stuck than higher blood sugar.

B.Poor self-control could cause aggression between intimate partners.

C.People are often the most aggressive against the strangers.

D.People with more glucose force louder blasts of noise

【6】What does the underlined word “aggressive” in the second paragraph mean?

    A.有进取心的

    B.好争斗的

    C.积极的

    D.乐观的

Being a blockchain developer for two years, Zhang Yu admits that it was his aspiration (抱负) to explore new things that led him into this area of work.

“The blockchain can be seen as another form of the internet which is parallel to it,” said the 25-year-old. As applications used on the internet are developed by different companies, their data might not be trusted, according to Zhang. The blockchain, however, is decentralized, meaning that on this shared platform, it’s difficult to change the data. “The information is more secure and copyright is ensured due to its transparency,” Zhang said.

Zhang mostly programs digital collections such as artwork and digital museum exhibits into blockchain products. The products are then digitalized and can be traded virtually.

People may think that entering such a cutting-edge field must be awfully difficult. “A strong education background in computer science is required,” Zhang said. “However, it’s never too late to start.” Zhang himself is an example — he started as an undergraduate majoring in English and taught himself programming due to his interest in the topic. Zhang then studied computer science at a university in Hong Kong, which led to his current job.

Zhang pointed out the challenges a developer may face. “There are only about five thousand blockchain developers in China. So most of the time developers have to solve problems on their own,” Zhang said. They need to learn from their mistakes and explore new solutions. “Learning from peers is also crucial. When a new idea comes out, every developer needs to learn it to keep up with the latest trends,” Zhang added.

On the bright side, “the sense of achievement is massive when a project is finished,” Zhang said. “Plus I get to work from home and enjoy more freedom than others.”

    【1】What is a blockchain?

    A.A new internet-like service.

    B.A platform for digital exhibits.

    C.An application for data storage.

    D.A system to manage copyrights.

【2】Which statement does NOT consist with the principle of the blockchain?

A.The blockchain prohibits companies from changing data at will.

B.The information in the blocks is secure and transparent in the network.

C.The transaction won’t be added to the block unless it is proved legal.

D.The money is moved indirectly from A to B.

【3】What is required to become a blockchain developer?

    A.The ability to self-study.

    B.Relevant work experience.

C.A good com mand of English.

D.A solid knowledge of computer science.

【4】What is a challenge blockchain developers may face, according to Zhang?

    A.Intense peer pressure.

    B.Limited job opportunities.

    C.Little experience to refer to.

    D.High likelihood of making mistakes.

【5】What does Zhang think is a benefit of being a blockchain developer?

A.Feeling fulfilled after a project is completed.

B.Gaining constant access to new knowledge.

C.Having the opportunity to work independently.

D.Having the chance to work on well established projects.

  • 24、I drove a taxi for extra money east of Toronto thirty years ago. Each time a taxi drove up to the front of the Greenwood Racetrack, a group of local kids would run along the sidewalk angling for position by the passenger door. One lucky kid, or rather, the most aggressive one, would open the passenger door and say “Good luck, Mister!” The man getting out of the cab would vaguely say thanks and throw the kid a quarter. It was a routine everybody knew.

Throughout the summer, one kid caught my eye. He was bigger than most of all the other kids but pushed away by even the smallest. He never made it but never gave up. One day, his chance arrived. As I was pulling up to the sidewalk, all the kids were pushing for a cab just ahead of mine. The boy saw me and walked toward my taxi. As I positioned the passenger door right beside him, he never paused and opened the passenger door, warmly saying, “Good luck, Mister!”

But the man neither said thanks nor flipped him a quarter. He pushed him aside so hard that the boy fell on the sidewalk. I knew it hurt him badly. I got out in less than 10 seconds, but the man was gone in the crowd. So I looked for the kid. I decided to give him $20 for the effort. By the time I spotted him he was far up ahead, walking away in the opposite direction through the crowd and his head hanging down. When I got the cab turned around I lost sight of him. I never saw him again. I’d like to find him one day and tell him that if only he had stuck around a little longer I would have given him a whole $20.

I learned from this kid that when things seem so hopeless that you are ready to give up, it’s the time when things are most likely to turn around for you.

1What can we learn from the first paragraph?

    A. The passenger was ready to give a tip to the kid.

    B. The author was a professional taxi driver at that time.

    C. The lucky child was the toughest among the local kids.

    D. The driver would work with and benefit from those children.

2Why did the kid never succeed in opening the passenger door?

    A. He was modest.   B. He was the shortest.

    C. He made no effort.   D. He pushed his way.

3Why did the author get out of his taxi?

    A. To catch up with the kid.

    B. To encourage the disappointed kid.

    C. To give the kid some money.

    D. To intend to demand the tip for the kid.

4According to the passage, which goes with the author’s intention?

    A. Never give in to difficulties.   B. Sunshine comes after a storm.

    C. Face up to competitions.   D. Each road leads to Rome.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Many years ago, I was at a girls’ school and our teacher made all the girls in the class sit next to someone different every day.

On one of the days, my teacher paired Madhuri, who I had never talked to, and me to sit next to each other. I noticed that she seemed very anxious. I asked her what was wrong. She remained silent at first, but eventually, she told me that she had three sisters in her family and that her father couldn’t afford school books for all of them.

My primary school was strict, as was the standard then, and if you didn’t have your school books the teacher would make you leave the class. Madhuri was very anxious that day because she thought that the teacher would tell her to leave the class. When the teacher saw that she didn’t have the books, he told Madhuri that she couldn’t attend class for a week.

Madhuri was very upset. I felt so bad when I saw her pain that I decided to help her. I went to speak to her and offered to buy the books for her. She refused my offer to help. She had very strong principles and she would never accept things bought by others.

When I got home from school I told my mom the story. She said that it was good that I had tried to help but I should stop worrying about it because there was nothing more that I could do if she had refused my offer to help. I couldn’t stop worrying about it though.
