21、“What is civilization?” asked Kenneth Clark 50 years ago in the influential BBC series on the subject. “I don’t know, and I can’t define it in abstract terms, yet. But I think I can recognize it when I see it, and I’m looking at it now.” And he turned to gesture behind him, at the soaring Gothic towers and flying buttresses of Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院).
It seems inhuman to care more about a building than about people. That the sight of Notre Dame going up in flames has attracted so much more attention than floods in southern Africa which killed over 1,000 arouses understandable feelings of guilt. Yet the widespread, intense grief at the sight of the cathedral’s collapsing steeple (尖塔) is in fact profoundly human—and in a particularly 21st-century way.
It is not just the economy that is global today, it is culture too. People wander the world in search not just of jobs and security but also of beauty and history. Familiarity breeds affection. A building on whose sunny steps you have rested, in front of which you have taken a selfie with your loved one, becomes a warm part of your memories and thus of yourself.
This visual age has given beauty new power, and social media have turned great works of art into superstars. Only a few, though, have achieved this status. Just as there is only ever a handful of world-famous actors, so the pantheon (万神殿) of globally recognizable cultural symbols is tiny: the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo’s David, the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramid— and Notre Dame. Disaster, too, is visual. In the 24 hours after the fire started, videos on social media of the burning cathedral were viewed nearly a quarter of a billion times.
Yet the emotions the sight aroused were less about the building itself than about what losing it might mean. Notre Dame is an expression of humanity at its collective best. Nobody could look up into that arched (拱形的) ceiling without wondering at the collective genius of the thousands of unknown craftsmen who, over a century and a half, realized a vision so grand in its structural ambition and so delicate in its hand-made detail. Its survival through 850 years of political unrest—through war, revolution and Nazi occupation—binds the present to the past.

22、 The host poured the tea into the cup and placed it on the small table in front of his guests, who were a father and daughter, and put the lid on the cup with a clink. Apparently thinking of something, he hurried into the inner room, leaving the thermos on the table. His two guests heard a chest of drawers opening and a rustling.
They remained sitting in the parlor, the ten-year-old daughter looking at the flowers outside the window, the father just about to take his cup, when the crash came, right there in the parlor. Something was hopelessly broken.
It was the thermos, which had fallen to the floor. The girl looked over her shoulder abruptly, startled, staring. It was mysterious. Neither of them had touched it, not even a little bit. True, it hadn't stood steadily when their host placed it on the table, but it hadn't fallen then.
The crash of the thermos caused the host, with a box of sugar cubes in his hand, to rush back from the inner room. He gawked at the steaming floor and blurted out. "It doesn't matter! It doesn't matter!
The father started to say something. Then he muttered, "Sorry, I touched it and it fell."
"It doesn't matter," the host said.
Later, when they left the house, the daughter said, "Daddy, did you touch it?"
"No. But it stood so close to me."
"But you didn't touch it. I saw your reflection in the windowpane. You were sitting perfectly still."
The father laughed. "What then would you give as the cause of its fall?"
"The thermos fell by itself. The floor is uneven. It wasn't steady when Mr. Li put it there. Daddy, why did you say that you...?"
"That won't do, girl. It sounds more acceptable when I say I knocked it down. There are things which people accept less, the more you defend them. The truer the story you tell, the less true it sounds."
The daughter was lost in silence for a while. Then she said, "Can you explain it only this way?"
"Only this way," her father said.

23、After 40 years, I met my childhood hero. Not a sporting god or an ageing popstar. Judy Blume, the beloved children’s author, at this year’s Sydney Writer’s Festival.
Still I am uneasy. As a primary school teacher and mum, what of today’s children’s inner lives? And their books? For them, “electronics have changed everything about the how of communication,” says Blume. “But not what they’re feeling.” Screens lure (诱惑) Australian children for up to seven hours a day. Screen time may involve reading and positive social interactions.
Reading books connects us in spirit. It unites generations and shapes children’s identity, their own voice. Reading books fired our imaginations. Characters filled our hearts. They were good company.
Will this generation feel the same? Surely “intelligent digital beings” like Siri, Alexa or Google Home could never replace children’s imaginary social companions?
Psychology Professor Sandra Calvert thinks it’s possible. She writes in the Journal of Children and Media although young children may understand that “artificial beings” are not biologically alive, children’s “personification and treatment of them ‘as if’ they are alive, may be enough to make them valuable social partners, who can serve as trusted teachers and friends”. Robots? Digital imitations can’t connect children with what it means to be human.
And books smell good. “How can we encourage children to read?” I asked my childhood hero. “Go to a bookstore with your child,” says Blume. “Sit on the floor. Turn the pages. Read the first page, a middle page, or don’t, but help your child find a voice they can connect with.” You can do that at the library or with a teacher. Me, I will be heading to the attic to dust off a few favourites.

24、Besides entertainment and beautiful lanterns, another important part of the Lantern Festival, or Yuanxiao Festival is eating small dumpling balls made of glutinous (粘性的) rice flour (粉状物). We call these balls Yuanxiao or Tangyuan. Obviously, they get the name from the festival itself. It is said that the custom of eating Yuanxiao originated during the Eastern Jin Dynasty in the fourth century, then became popular during the Tang and Song periods.
The fillings (馅料) inside the dumplings or Yuanxiao are either sweet or salty. Sweet fillings are made of sugar, walnuts (核桃), sesame(芝麻), osmanthus flowers (桂花), rose petals(花瓣). A single ingredient (原料) or any combination can be used as the filling. The salty variety is filled with minced meat (肉末儿), vegetables or a mixture.
The way to make Yuanxiao also varies between northern and southern China. The usual method followed in southern provinces is to shape the dough (生面团) of rice flour into balls, make a hole, insert the filling, then close the hole and smooth out the dumpling by rolling it between your hands. In North China, sweet or nutmeat stuffing is the usual ingredient. The fillings are pressed into hardened cores, dipped lightly in water and rolled in a flat basket containing dry glutinous rice flour. A layer of the flour sticks to the filling, which is then again dipped in water and rolled a second time in the rice flour. And so it goes, like rolling a snowball, until the dumpling is the desired size.
The custom of eating Yuanxiao dumplings remains. This tradition encourages both old and new stores to promote their Yuanxiao products. They all try their best to improve the taste and quality of the dumplings to attract more customers.

25、When it comes to anxiety over online data privacy, the first and most common legal solution comes to mind: more transparency. If firms are required to tell people what information they collect, and do so in a simple and obvious manner, people would be able to ___________ doing business with those that adopt abusive privacy practices.
There is one ___________ with the transparency solution. There is no evidence that it works! (And there are mountains of evidence that it fails.) Even when the information people are asked to share is highly private and ___________, and even if the notices about the ways firms collect, use and share this information are delivered in the simplest and most concise manner, people still don’t read the notices and don’t change their ___________. A recent experiment tried to deliver the privacy notices to users in the format of a simple “nutrition facts” box, to no avail. The notice still went ___________ and people shared the same amount of sensitive personal information as they do when the notices are long and cluttered.
If simple notices are not read or used by people, the hopes for ___________ choice flee. Users are not going to ___________ Google’s personalized ads or to personalize the Facebook’s privacy setting. These consumers might comparison-shop among services based on various quality and service measures, but not on the basis of ___________ features.
It is also important to dispel a second perceived solution to privacy ___________: lawsuits. There are numerous class action lawsuits percolating in courts, alleging violations by websites of privacy statutes. Google,____________, has long been defending against the complaints that its Gmail service, which scans the text of its users’ emails, is a violation of the Wiretap Act (窃听法). Many of these lawsuits eventually fail because they cannot prove a ____________ injury. But even the few that succeed are not going to change the behavior of firms. They will only teach firms to write more ____________ privacy notices and require more frequent clicks “I Agree” from users.
A third legal solution fueled by privacy anxiety is the “right to be forgotten”. It gives users the right to request search engines to ____________ links to personal information that are no longer accurate or relevant. Viewed by its ____________ as a major landmark in privacy protection, the right to be forgotten mandate is ultimately proving to be a storm in a tea cup. In one year, Google reported to have received only 218,000 requests (or which it granted about half). Only a minor number of users are ____________ sensitive to privacy issues to exercise the cherished right.

26、阅读下面短文, 然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
High school students in Victoria, Australia have been offered Education Department advice ahead of their written exams. The advice has been developed by the state Education Department together with a mental health organization. “Exams can be a stressful time and the government is ensuring that students have the support they need to get through the period,” Education Minister Martin Dixon said.
Students are advised to breathe deeply through their noses as a relaxation technique, to have a healthy diet, and to improve their mood by exercising. The importance of sleep, staying connected with family and friends, and planned study times are emphasized. Students will also learn “positive self-talk”. “The positive way that you talk to yourself can be used for greater confidence and reducing stress, and can be a very effective way to prepare yourself for a big test or exam,” students are told.
The tips encourage young people to speak up if they are having difficulty, and remember that life will go on beyond exams. At the same time, students with serious problems are urged to seek professional help.
