It had been set to sleep for two weeks to ride out extreme climatic conditions and will finally undertake its scientific mission. The Jade Rabbit was “ put to sleep” on 26 December at the onset of the first lunar night of the mission. One night on the moon lasts for around two weeks on Earth and during this time, temperatures fall to -180℃ ---conditions too cold for the equipment to function in. There is also no sunlight to power the Jade Rabbit’s solar panels.
Zhou Jianliang, chief engineer with the BACC, explained: “ During the lunar night, the lander and the rover were in a power-off condition and the communication with Earth was cut off.
“ When the night ends, they will be started up with the power provided by sunlight and resume operation and communication according to preset programmes. He added that the Jade Rabbit surviving the lunar night showed Chinese technology had proved successful.
The Jade Rabbit and the lander compose Chang’e-3 landed on the moon on 14 December. With the landing, China became one of only three nations to soft-land on the moon, and the first to do so in more than three decades.
Scientists said the mission was designed to test new technologies and build the country’s expertise of space exploration. The Jade Rabbit will gather scientific data and capture images from the Moon. China was planning further missions planned to collect lunar soil samples and it is thought officials are looking to conduct manned lunar landings if they prove successful.

DOGS DRIVE CAR
Auckland, New Zealand
After two months of learning, Monty, and Porter were able to drive an automobile around a racetrack. “We wanted to prove how smart rescue dogs are,” animal behaviorist Mark Vette says. Vette first used voice commands and treats to teach the dogs how to turn a steering wheel and how to change gear(换挡).
The dogs’ ride only accelerated up to 7.5 miles an hour, and trainers could stop the auto using a remote control.
GOLDEN ZEBRA
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
Zoe the zebra’s markings are special. The animal has white and golden stripes. Zoe’s appearance resulted from a rare condition called amelanosis(黑色素缺失症). Her body doesn't make enough melanin, the substance in an animal’s skin and hair cells that produces color. “Only 25 other golden zebras are known to exist in the world,”says Ann Goody, who runs the wildlife refuge where Zoe lives. In the wild, life may be difficult for animals with amelanosis because predators(捕猎者) can easily spot them. But Zoe is protected at her refuge.

24、If you’ve ever learned a new language, you know how difficult it can be. Learning a new language, especially after early childhood, can be a huge task, burdened by long vocabulary lists to memorize, and troublesome tenses to master. However, it’s worth the effort. In today’s interconnected world, learning a new language can change your life. It will certainly change your brain.
John Grundy, a neuroscientist in bilingualism and the brain at Iowa State University, explains when you learn a new language, your brain gets rearranged, new connections are made and new pathways are formed. Grundy offers a useful analogy (类比): Imagine that you always take the same route to work. Then one day, the road is washed out. Now what? If you’d varied your route over the years, you’d have options already in mind. You could hop on another road. “It’s really just a remodeling of the brain that allows it to become more efficient,” Grundy says.
A 2012 study found that this remodeling can be significant. After three months of intense language study, recruits at the Swedish Armed Forces Interpreter Academy had increases in cortical (脑皮层的) thickness in areas associated with language processing.
And the remodeling doesn’t help with only language functions. Ashley Chung-Fat-Yim, who researches bilingualism at Northwestern University, says knowing a second language can help prevent cognitive decline. “There is a consistent finding that bilinguals are able to stave off symptoms of dementia (失智症) for about four to six years compared to monolinguals,” says Grundy.
If you’re thinking it’s too late, you’re probably wrong. When it comes to adding on a new one, adults aren’t at as much of a disadvantage as you might think. Chung-Fat-Yim says it’s not so much the age at which you learn a new language as the way you learn it. If you practice a lot and immerse yourself in the language, you can see the benefits at any age, especially when you get older.
【1】What can we know about learning a new language from the text?
A.It is risky.
B.It is effortless.
C.It is rewarding.
D.It is enjoyable.
【2】What happens to your brain when you learn a new language?
A.It becomes messy.
B.It becomes stable.
C.It gets more efficient.
D.It gets less creative.
【3】What do the underlined words “stave off” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Extend.
B.Delay.
C.Show.
D.Worsen.
【4】What message does Chung-Fat-Yim try to convey in the last paragraph?
A.It’s never too late to learn.
B.He who laughs last laughs best.
C.The early bird catches the worm.

My mother was a teacher and she would tell me stories about my grandparents. When Grandma welcomed two kids, my mom and my uncle, she decided to look for a brave business journey in coffee industry where no women held any position at that time. She didn’t like the fact that Grandpa had to work for some other companies to make a living. Instead, she hoped that they would have their own business. So she moved away from where Grandpa used to live and bought a piece of land with two kids to help to start her own coffee farm.
When my mom and uncle grew up and went to school in the nearby village, my grandma, a brave woman. worked endlessly on the land planting one coffee plant after another. By the time my mom and uncle were at junior school. she had planted about 12 acres of coffee plants all alone. The business journey was very difficult. Grandpa returned home only on Saturdays and Sundays. For ten years, Grandma hardly slept well at night. guarding her land. resources and children. As the farm expanded, she had too much to do.
One Saturday morning. when Grandpa went back home, Grandma asked him. “Can you help me run the farm. dear?” After much thought. Grandpa replied. “Yes. Let’s work together to face the future.” Finally, he gave up his job and came to support Grandma both physically and emotionally.
Then Grandma realized that the farm was too large to rely on the labor of family members alone. More people were needed to keep the farm going. When my mom and uncle were at high school, Grandma thought that the village education wasn’t good enough for her kids, and later she sent them off to a town to study with their cousins.
Meanwhile, Grandma decided to ask other family members to work for the farm Grandpa often drove his truck to pick them up in the early morning and drop them at dusk. But the jol of transporting the workers was really hard. So Grandpa and Grandma wanted to think of a way to solve the problem.
