22、 What is the nature of the scientific attitude, the attitude of the man or woman who studies and applies physics, biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, medicine or any other science?
We all know that science plays an important role in our societies. However, many people believe that our progress depends on two different aspects of science. The first aspect is the application of the machines, products and systems of knowledge that scientists and technologists develop. The second is the application of the special methods of thought and action that scientists use in their work.
What are these special methods of thinking and acting? First of all, it seems that a successful scientist is curious - he wants to find out how and why the universe works. He usually pays attention to problems which he notices have no satisfying explanation, and looks for relationships even if the data available seem to be unconnected. Moreover, he thinks he can improve the existing conditions and enjoys trying to solve the problems which this involves.
He is a good observer, accurate, patient and objective and uses the facts he observes to the fullest. For example, trained observers obtain a very large amount of information about a star mainly from the accurate analysis of the simple lines that appear in a spectrum(光谱).
He does not accept statements which are not based on the most complete evidence available. He rejects authority as the only basis for truth. Scientists always check statements and make experiments carefully and objectively.
Furthermore, he does not readily accept his own idea, since he knows that man is the least reliable of scientific instruments and that a number of factors tend to disturb objective investigation.
Lastly, he is full of imagination since he often has to look for relationships in data which are not only complex but also frequently incomplete. Furthermore, he needs imagination if he wants to guess how processes work and how events take place.
These seem to be some of the ways in which a successful scientist or technologist thinks and acts.
【1】Which of the following statements about a curious scientist is TRUE?
A.He doesn't find confidence and pleasure in work.
B.He makes efforts to investigate potential connections.
C.He is interested in problems that are explained.
D.He looks for new ways of acting.
【2】According to the passage, a successful scientist would _______________.
A.easily appreciate others' research work

D.always use evidence from observation to the fullest

A.Objective and careful. B.Curious and casual.
C.Cautious and arrogant. D.Subjective and down-to-death .

A.Key to a successful scientist. B.Scientists’ ways of thinking and acting

23、 In one of my favorite photographs of my mother, she's about 18 and very tan, with long and blond hair. It's the 1970s and my dad is there, too, hugging her from behind.
I haven't seen this photo for years. I have no idea where it is now, but I still think of it — and, specifically, my mom is in it. She looks so young and innocent. At that time she hasn't yet dropped out of college, or got married. The young woman in this photo has no idea that life will bring her five children and five grandchildren, one divorce, two marriages, and a move across the country.
For me, as for many daughters, the time before my mother became a mother is a string of stories, told and retold: the time she sold her childhood Barbie doll to buy a ticket to Woodstock; the time she worked as a waitress at Howard Johnson's, struggling to pay her way through her first year at Rutgers. The old photos of her are even more appealing than the stories because they're a historical record, carrying the weight of fact, even if the truth there is slippery: the trick of an image, and so much left outside the frame.
It is always a comfort from those photos to know that time, aging and motherhood cannot take away a woman's essential identity. For daughters who closely resemble their moms, it must be an even bigger comfort; these mothers and daughters are twins, separated by a generation, and an oldphoto serves as a kind of mirror.
For daughters, these old photos of our mothers feel like both a chasm and a bridge. The woman in the picture is someone other than the woman we know. She is also exactly the person in the photo—still, right now. Finally, we see that the woman we've come to think of as Mom—whether she's nurturing, or disapproving, or thoughtful, or supportive, or sentimental—is also a mysterious, fun, brave babe.
She's been here all this time.
【1】Why does the author still think of the photo of her mother appealing?
A.The photo reminds her of her mother.
B.Her mother looks young and happy in the photo.
C.She wonders why her mother dropped out of college.
D.The photo tells a lot about her mother in her youth.
【2】What does the underlined word "chasm" in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Bond. B.Memory. C.Difference. D.Relation.
【3】Why do some photos of mothers bring comfort to their daughters?
A.The photos are kept well even after generations.
B.The photos record the life of the mothers faithfully.
C.The photos help daughters to learn more about their mothers.
D.The photos show the essential part of the mothers remain unchanged.
【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Pictures of Our Mothers. B.Our Mothers as We Never Saw Them.

24、You jerk(猛然一动)awake in the middle of the night in confusion. Is there a figure standing in the corner of the room? Your brain begs your legs to move, but nothing happens. The anxiety increases. Your eyes scan the room. Just as you’re about to hit peak panic, you sit up and the figure disappears.
You’ve just experienced sleep paralysis(瘫痪), which is the name experts give to all sorts of weird things that occur during sleep. It happens when the brain temporarily disables the body to prevent it from acting out the vivid dreams occurring during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. It often comes with a feeling of immobility, and a sense of choking. The good news is, it’s absolutely normal, even if it’s terrifying.
But when sleep paralysis happens outside of deep sleep—when a person is just dozing off—it can be “disruptive of the architecture of sleep,” said Baland Jalal, a researcher who investigates the phenomenon. That could lead to more sleep paralysis.
While not everyone who has sleep paralysis experiences hallucinations(幻觉), seeing a person or a ghost in the room is the most common vision, said Jalal. The mechanisms behind sleep paralysis remain unclear, but research indicates that certain risk factors may increase the likelihood of experiencing a jerk, including extreme exercise before sleep, inadequate sleep, emotional stress and worry, and excessive stimulant consumption (like caffeine and nicotine), especially later in the day.
“For most people, it is not indicative of any kind of disease. If you are really worried about it, regular sleep and other simple relaxation techniques, like meditation, deep breathing and yoga, may help,” said Dr. Nathaniel Watson, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. While the experience feels frightening, the episodes last only a few seconds or minutes at most. Most people slip out of it as quickly as they fell into it, he said.
【1】What is sleep paralysis?
A.A frightening dream that interrupts sleep.
B.A physical symptom of anxiety disorders.
C.A mental disease that affects sleep quality.
D.A brief state of being conscious but frozen.
【2】What do people who have sleep paralysis often experience?
A.Involuntary cough.
B.Unreal sensation.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
The New York City sun was shining and no amount of air conditioning could help ease the discomfort from the burning heat. The numerous buildings rose tall above the tree lines in Central Park, seeing over the busy streets filled with crowds of workers dressed in gray and black suits, rushing to be on time for work.
Peter, an officer, walked out of his company to get brunch and buy groceries as he always did. He was a young man, dressed in a loose, white T-shirt and basketball shorts. He was wandering about the streets, easing his way through the crowd, listening to his favorite songs through his earphones.
Upon his usual route to his favorite restaurant, his joyful pace came to a stop when he felt a faint smell of smoke carried by the warm wind. He took out his earphones and looked around to see if anyone else was alarmed by the stench (恶臭). The crowd began to slow down as more people stopped at this smell. Fire trucks raced by with their alarms and Peter, along with the people around him, started to become worried. Then he saw thick, black smoke starting to cloud the blue skies. In curiosity, Peter headed in the direction of the smoke to find its source.
His heart was racing as the awful smell of the smoke strengthened. When the clouds of smoke were finally directly above him, Peter saw a huge building in flames, starting to fall down to ashes. When he finally emerged in the front, the big red flames were licking (舔) the sides of the walls and columns of fire shot through the roof.
When he finally was able to shake himself out of a state of shock, he saw a sign that said “Moving Company”. He remembered that morning his brother, Ryann told him and their mother their company was scheduled to deliver a shipment that day. And Ryann was in the building!
“I cannot leave Ryann alone in the building,” thought Peter.
