二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Alpha, Beta, Delta… these Greek letters used to only appear in our math classes but are now popping up in news headlines.

Now, it’s Lambda. As the Delta variant (变异) spreads throughout communities in Asia, Europe and the United States, another variant, Lambda, is spreading rapidly throughout South America, Forbes reported on Aug 10.

On May 31, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a naming system for variants of the coronavirus that uses letters of the Greek alphabet. Before that, the public had to call a variant its scientific name or refer to it based on where it was identified (查明).

For example, a strain (菌株) of COVID-19 identified in South Africa in late 2020 was called variant 501Y.V2 or B.1.351. Media also called the same virus “the South African variant”. Now, everyone call it “Beta”.

Compared to complicated scientific names, the Greek letters are much easier to remember. “It is a lot easier for a radio newsreader to say ‘Delta’ than bee-one-six-one-seven-two,” Jeffrey Barrett, a UK statistical geneticist told Nature.

WHO hopes this change will help fight against the stigma associated with geography –based names. “I can understand why people just call it ‘the South African variant’— they don’t mean anything by it,” Salim Abdool Karim, an epidemiologist in South Africa, told Nature. “The problem is, if we allow it to continue, there are people who have a bad motive and will use it.”

“No country should be stigmatized for detecting and reporting variants,” Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s COVID-19 technical lead, wrote on Twitter.

As the virus is still evolving, 11 mutations (变种) have been named as recently as Sept 1. What if the 24 Greek letters are not enough? “We will possibly run out of the Greek alphabet, but we’re already looking at the next series of names,” Van Kerkhove told The Telegraph. “We’re actually considering star constellations (星座).”

Currently, the Virus Evolution Working Group and WHO’s legal team are double checking proposals to “make sure we don’t upset anyone with these names”, Van Kerkhove told The Telegraph.

In the future, will there be a “Virgo (处女座) variant” or an “Orion (猎户座) variant”? Let’s hope not, but only time will tell.

【1】What do we know about variants of the coronavirus according to the text?

A.Alpha, Beta, Delta… these variants used to only appear in our math classes.

B.It’s Lambda that spreads throughout communities in Asia, Europe and the US.

C.Beta variant was first detected and reported in South Africa.

D.It is a lot easier to say “bee-one-six-one-seven-two” than “Delta”.

【2】Which of the following best explains the word “stigma” underlined in paragraph 6?

    A.reputation

    B.discrimination

    C.pride

    D.surprise

【3】Which of the following isn’t supposed to be used as a name for a COVID-19 variant?

    A.Paris.

    B.Omega (ω).

    C.B.1.617.2.

    D.Virgo.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Not confusing anyone with scientific names

B.A new way to stop discrimination

C.The evolving mutations of the coronavirus

    D.Renaming COVID-19 variants

  • 22、“A positive attitude can be a gift to those around you,” said Jamie Long, a clinical psychologist in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “But it shouldn't take the place of listening thoughtfully to others' experiences.”

“When you choose to look at situations from one positive angle, you are very likely to dismiss a true experience,” Long explained. Even if you try to cheer up someone, ignoring someone's difficult experiences can leave them feeling they should hide negative feelings in the future.

As examples of “positive” responses that might destroy a friend's ability to share their feelings, Long listed: “Look for the silver lining” and “it could be worse”. Instead of trying to find a positive angle, Long suggested using accepting phrases that communicate a willingness to listen, and to share life's difficult moments with the people you care about.

Still, the positive benefits of negative emotions may be best experienced in relatively small doses(剂量). Lomas Quintero highlighted that appreciating the value of difficult feelings is all about finding balance. “Any negative emotion can go too far or turn into a clinical issue,” he said.

Long agreed. “There is an abundance of research that really touts(吹捧)the benefits of positivity, and we're not denying that,” Long said. “When you do so to an extreme, when you dismiss truth, that's where problems arise.”

    【1】What does Jamie Long advocate?

A.Taking a positive attitude to those around you,

B.Listening thoughtfully to others’ true experiences.

C.Choosing to look at situations from a positive angle.

D.Ignoring someone's difficult experiences to cheer up.

    A.To explain a rule.

    B.To clarify a concept.

    C.To give an example.

    D.To make a comparison.

【3】What is the author's attitude to the benefits of negative emotions?

    A.Favorable.

    B.Intolerant.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Objective.

【4】What do the last two paragraphs mainly talk about?

    A.The benefits of positive emotions.

    B.Clinical issues caused by negativity.

    C.Experiencing some difficult feelings.

    D.Balancing positivity against negativity.

People are being tricked into Facebook with the promise of a fun, free service without realizing they’re paying for it by giving up loads of personal information.

Most Facebook users don’t realize this is happening. Even if they know what the company is up to, they still have no idea what they’re paying for Facebook because people don’t really know what their personal data is worth.

The biggest problem, however, is that the company keeps changing the rules early on you keep everything private. That was the great thing about Facebook. You could create your own little private network. Last year. The company changed its privacy rules so that many things; your city, your photo, your friends’ names were set, by default (默认)to be shared with everyone on the Internet.

According to Facebook’s vice-president Elliot Schrage, the company is simply making changes to improve its service, and if people don’t share information. They have a “less satisfying experience.

Some critics think this is more about Facebook looking to make more money. In original business model, which involved selling ads and putting them. At the side of the pages totally, who wants to took at ads when they’re online connecting with their friends?

The privacy issue has already landed Facebook in hot water in Washington. In April. Senator Charles Schumer called on Facebook to change its privacy policy. He also urged the Federal Trade Commission to set guidelines for social networking sites. “I think the senator rightly communicated that we had not been clear about what the new products were and how people could choose to use them or not to use them,” Schrage admits.

I suspect that whatever Facebook has done so far to invade our privacy, it’s only the beginning, which is why I’m considering cancelling my account. Facebook is a handy site, but I’m upset by the idea that my information is in the hands of people I don’t know. That’s too high a price to pay.

【1】What do we learn about Facebook from the first paragraph?

    A. It is a website that sends messages to users who want to get married.

    B. It earns money by putting on advertisements.

    C. It makes money by selling its users’ personal data.

    D. It provides loads of information to its users.

【2】 What does the author say about most Facebook users?

    A. They are unwilling to give up their personal information.

    B. They don’t know their personal data enriches Facebook.

    C. They don’t identify themselves when using the website.

    D. They care very little about their personal information.

【3】Why does Facebook make changes to its rules according to Elliot Schrage?

    A. To provide better service to its users.

    B. To obey the Federal guidelines.

    C. To improve its users’ connection

    D. To expand its business.

【4】 Why does the author plan to cancel his Facebook account?

    A. He is dissatisfied with its present service.

    B. He finds many of its users untrustworthy.

    C. He doesn’t want his personal data badly used.

    D. He is upset by its frequent rule changes.

E-cigarettesthought by some to be responsible for a decline in youth cigarette smoking---are actually attracting a new population of adolescents who might not otherwise have smoked tobacco products, according to anew UC San Francisco study.

In the first national analysis of the impact of e-cigarettes on trends in youth smoking in the United States, UCSF researchers did not find evidence that e-cigarettes have caused youth smoking to decline. In fact, combined e-cigarette and cigarette use among adolescents in 2014 was higher than total cigarette use in 2009according to the study.

The authors concluded that the low-risk youth in the study, who went on to smoke regular cigarettes, may not have used nicotine at all if e-cigarettes did not exist.

“We didn't find any evidence that e-cigarettes are causing youth smoking to decline, ”said lead author Lauren Dutra, a former postdoctoral fellow at the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education and current social scientist at RTI International, a not-for-profit research organization based in North Carolina.

“While some of the kids using e-cigarettes were also smoking cigarettes, we found that kids who were at low risk of starting nicotine with cigarettes were using e-cigarettes," Dutra said. “Recent declines in youth smoking are likely due to tobacco control efforts, not to e-cigarettes.”

The national analysis builds on several previous studies that have reported that adolescents who start withe-cigarettes are more likely to subsequently smoke traditional cigarettes.

In August 2016, the US Food and Drug Adminis-tration restricted e-cigarette purchases to adults ages 18and older( California set the age to 21). The FDA also will require a warning label on e-cigarettes, starting August2018, regarding the addictive nature of nicotine. However, the FDA's ruling does not regulate advertising or flavors, and e-cigarettes continue to be sold in flavors that appeal to youth.

1What is the initial purpose for e-cigarettes to be invented?

A.To warn people of the harm of smoking. B.To discourage people from smoking.

C.To make cigarette smoking less harmful. D.To help kids give up  smoking.

2What do we learn about e-cigarettes, according to the study?

A.They actually have a negative influence on youth.

B.They are helpful in keeping kids away from smoking.

C.They help reduce the number of smokers.

D.They turned out to be less harmful than cigarettes.

3What probably caused the decline in youth smoking?

A.People's awareness of health. B.The use of e-cigarettes.

C.Efforts to control tobacco. D.Restrictions on e-cigarette sales.

4What's the suggestions of the FDA?

A.Advertising for e-cigarettes should be stopped.

B.There should be a warning label on e-cigarettes.

    C.E-cigarettes should not contain flavors.

    D.E-cigarettes should be further promoted.
