21、You know the saying “You’re as young as you feel.” Well, there may be some truth to that, according to researchers at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Ellen Langer, a Harvard psychologist who studies how the mind influences the body, and his colleagues reviewed the scientific literature for evidence that a person’s perception (感知) of their age might influence their health. They published their results in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science.
In one study that Langer led, 47 women had their hair done. The women who thought their new hairdos made them look younger did look younger to objective observers, who were shown before-and-after pictures. The women who thought they looked younger also showed a drop in blood pressure. Another study involving 4, 421 men found that those who became bald at a relatively young age were more likely to get cancer and heart disease than men who did not. Similarly, another study involving 2, 017 men found that those who lost their hair early were more likely to develop heart disease. “We believe that the feelings associated with being older than one’s real age account for some of these health outcomes,” the researchers wrote.
The researchers also described studies that found that women who had children later in life were more likely to be healthier and live longer than those who had children early, which they attributed to the fact that these mothers tend to spend more time with younger women. Similarly, people who marry younger partners tend to live longer than those who marry older partners, according to other studies.
Taken together, the research “supports the general mind-body hypothesis (假说) that when a younger mind is prepared, a younger body can accompany it.” While the mechanism remains unclear, the researchers figured that suggestions associated with aging can “make one unconsciously or consciously aware of old age and trigger a series of physiological processes that can have real effects on short-term and long-term health.”

22、When I entered Oxford University, I wasn't particularly interested in joining the rowing club. I just wanted to know what it is like to row in one of those narrow boats, so I signed up with the intention of quitting after the first session. At least that's what I thought.
Six months later, I found myself sitting in a rowing boat with three teammates, waiting for a 2000—meter race to start. In the boat alongside us sat a crew from the university's team, two of whom had won medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. My crew was only rowing at college—level and we had only trained a few times as a team, so facing such strong athletes was quite terrifying. I tried to focus my mind on the race, not on my opponents.
Go! We pushed off with all our might and rowed as fast as we could. As we reached the halfway mark, the other crew was ahead of us. But to my amazement we were gaining on them. If we could win the race, we would get through to the final! We pushed even harder, ignoring the pain in our legs and drawing energy from the cheers of our college friends. I could already sense the sweet taste of victory.
But then, disaster. One of my teammates lost control of his oar(桨), knocking him nearly out of the boat. We came to a sudden stop, and watched as our opponents crossed the finishing line. It was the most disappointing moment in my life. I wanted to punch my teammate who had ruined everything and push him into the water. But when I saw how angry he was with himself, I gave him a hug.
Although we lost, I'm still proud of how well we did that day facing a much stronger team. What I remember now is the thrill of racing, not the pain of defeat.

23、Brooke wanted a dollhouse and some sugar cookies. So the 6-year-old asked Alexa to get them. Alexa wasn’t her mom or babysitter. It was voice-activated home assistant powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Alexa comes with the Amazon Echo device. And it made Brooke’s wishes come true. A few days later, much to her parents surprise, a $170 dollhouse and four pounds of cookies showed up.
Alexa is not the only AI willing to order up treats for you. Apple HomePod has Siri, Google Home has its Assistant, and the upcoming Galaxy Home device will have Bixby. People who own these devices use them mainly for listening to music, checking the weather, and setting timers. According to a report, voice shopping is rare. People who do it mainly order simple things like paper towels. But many experts predict a boom in voice shopping in the near future.
But voice shopping has its downsides. Unwanted dollhouses aren’t the biggest problem. It’s usually very easy to cancel an order or return items. The thing that creeps some people out is that these assistants are always listening. They have to be able to respond when you want them. So they listen to for “Alexa” or “OK Google” or another command. When they hear it, they start recording the conversation. Some have worried about what happens to these recordings. Should companies be allowed to use them to learn about people’s shopping habits? Should police access them to solve a crime? What if someone hacks the device?
What do you think? Are you ready to start voice shopping?

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
During summer vacation when I was twelve, a sawmill (锯木厂) was operating in the woods near our farm. Early each morning. I’d watch the men cut down big trees, saw them into logs, and skids the logs to the mill to be cut into wood.
The logs were dragged by a team of horses named Jack and Billy. They were gentle, and I petted them every chance I got.
One afternoon when Jack and Billy were pulling a log up to the mill, a stick wedged (插进) in Jack’s right front hoof(蹄子). After Mr. Davis removed the stick, the horse driver said that the foot should be doctored. But Mr. Davis said he didn’t have time for that. He said if the horse couldn’t carn its living, he’d get one that could.
I felt sick inside. Jack and Billy were my best friends! I couldn’t stop thinking about Jack's foot and what Mr. Davis had said.
For the rest of the day the team pulled logs from the woods. By nightfall. Jack was limping (跛) badly. Mr. Davis told his workers that the mill would be closed for three days because he’d be away for the Fourth of July 22. He offered to pay me a dollar to feed and water the horses while he was gone. I quickly agreed.
The next morning. I rode my bike to Mr. Davis’s barn (畜棚). I fed the horses their grain and water. And then I looked at Jack’s hoof. The part inside of the big iron shoe looked red and broken. When I put the hoof down, Jack let only the front of it rest lightly on the ground. I knew that Jack couldn’t work with that injured foot, but if he didn’t earn his living. Mr. Davis would get rid of him. I just couldn't let that happen. But what could I do?
I didn’t know anything about medicine, and Mr. Davis said he wouldn’t pay for a doctor. As I slowly rode my bike home, my mind raced. I needed to find a way to help my big friend.
