二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   This summer, when earthquakes rocked Southern California on back-to-back days, it was a close-to-home reminder that we may one day experience the “Big One,” a quake with the power to kill and destroy. A few people, however, saw something else: a photo opportunity. Tourists poured to a large crack in a highway to see evidence of the damage for themselves and, of course, take a quick selfie.

1 It feeds so many of the weakest parts of ourselves: our born attraction to images of human faces instead of landscapes or objects, our interest in capturing memories, and yes, our need for social approval. Yet, it is easy to feel uncomfortable with selfies and even laugh at them, especially when they are risky or in bad taste. So why do we take selfies?

Selfies have become so common that my grandma does them when we get together. 2 Instead, selfies are a way for us to connect and communicate, and feel a more personal connection with people all around the world.

In one example, researchers developed a #ScientistsWhoSelfie campaign studying how scientists posting photos of themselves with their work on social media influenced public opinion of the profession. 3 “Those scientists in general were described as warmer, but no less competent,” said Paige Jarreau, the lead author on the study.

While some scientists refused at first, fearing that their colleagues would consider them self-centered or think they take their work less seriously, those concerns disappeared once researchers explained that it could help build public trust. “This is not just me taking a duck-faced (嘟嘟嘴) selfie or trying to look cute on camera,” said Dr Jarreau. “This is me being able to better tell the story about my science in a way that helps people trust me.”

4 Dr Jarreau recalled a road trip she made to national parks, where she witnessed so many people taking selfies, she began taking photos of the selfie-takers themselves. “Ask yourself: Why are you posting that picture?” she said. “If there was a platform that didn’t enable likes, would you post it?” After all, there are other ways to develop a social connection. You could send the photo to a private group. You could put it in a frame at home. You could be mindful in the moment by not taking it at all. 5

    A. But if you do, watch your step.

    B. There is no denying the draw of the selfie.

    C. With each like, we feel better about ourselves.

    D. The thought that selfie is the symbol of self-love is outdated.

    E. However, most of us post mechanically, even madly, in our daily lives.

    F. After all, people have been making self-portraits for long, in remarkably similar ways.

    G. They found that photos with human faces helped improve impressions in a field that is often subject to negative stereotypes.

  • 22、“Kill the fool!” “Murder the referee!”

These are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. But let’s not kid ourselves. They have been known to influence behavior in such a way as to lead to real bloodshed. Volumes have been written about the way words affect us. It has been shown that words having certain connotations may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual humanistic behavior. I see the term “opponent” as one of those words. Perhaps the time has come to delete it from sports terms.

The dictionary meaning of the term “opponent” is “adversary” “enemy”; “one who opposes your interests.” Thus, when a player meets an opponent, he or she may tend to treat that opponent as an enemy. At such times, winning may dominate one’s intellect, and every action, no matter how gross, may be considered justifiable. I recall an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player’s request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player proceeded to rub his gloves across his wet T-shirt and then exclaimed. “Are they wet enough now?”

In the heat of battle, players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without considering the consequences that such a move might have on anyone in their way. I have also witnessed a player reacting to his opponent’s international and illegal blocking by deliberately hitting him with the ball as hard as he could during the course of play. Off the court, they are good friends. Does that make any sense? It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which departs from normal behavior.

Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated the game to the level where it belongs there by setting an example to the rest of the sporting world. Replacing the term “opponent” with “associate” could be an ideal way to start.

The dictionary meaning of the term “associate” is “colleague”; “friend”; “companion.” Reflect a moment! You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to the term “associate” rather than “opponent.”

【1】Which of the following statements best expresses the author’s view________?

    A. Aggressive behavior in sports can have serious consequences.

    B. The words people use can influence their behavior.

    C. Unpleasant words in sports are often used by foreign athletes.

    D. Unfair judgments by referees will lead to violence on the sports field.

【2】Harsh words are spoken during games because the players ________.

    A. are too eager to win

    B. are usually short-tempered and easily offended

    C. cannot afford to be polite in fierce competition

    D. treat their rivals as enemies

【3】What did the handball player do when he was not allowed a time out to change his gloves______?

    A. He refused to continue the game.

    B. He angrily hit the referee with a ball.

    C. He claimed that the referee was unfair.

    D. He wet his gloves by rubbing them across his T-shirt.

【4】The author hopes to have the current situation in sports improved by ________.

    A. appealing to players to use clean language on the court

    B. raising the referee’s sense of responsibility

    C. changing the attitude of players on the sports field

    D. regulating the relationship between players and referees

  • 24、Rise of the Robots

The word “robot” was coined in 1920 by the Czech playwright Karel Capek. 【1】 For most of their history, however, robots have been dumb, inelegant mechanical devices sitting out of sight in factories.

Things are starting to change, however. 【2】 They brought cheap cameras and sensors, fast wireless communications and powerful, smaller computer chips to robots. More recent advances in machine learning have added software to make robots better informed about their surroundings and equipped them to make wiser decisions. Robots are leaving carefully managed industrial settings for everyday life and, in the coming years, will increasingly work in supermarkets, clinics, social care and much more.

【3】 Many industries are facing a shortage of labour—the demand for workers has recovered much faster than expected from the pandemic and some people have left the workforce, particularly in America. Warehousing has grown rapidly thanks to the e- commerce boom. Robots are now crucial, picking items off shelves and helping people pack an exponentially rising numbers of boxes. In a pandemic-ravaged world, short of workers but with lots of elderly folk to look after, having more robots to boost productivity would be a good thing.

Inevitably, some people will be on the losing end of change even as the robots make society as a whole better off. One lesson from the freewheeling (随心所欲的) globalisation of the 1990s and 2000s is that the growth in trade that was overwhelmingly beneficial triggered a political opposition, because the losers felt left behind.   【4】 As jobs   change, workers should be helped to acquire new skills, including how to work with and manage the robots. that will increasingly be their colleagues.

The potential gains from the robot revolution are huge. In Capek’s play, the robots rise up against their human masters and cause mass unemployment and worse. The beginnings of the world’s real robots have not matched Capek’s satire. There is no reason to think that their future needs to either.

A.And many people fear that robots will destroy jobs.

B.That is why firms and governments had better recognise the value of retraining and lifelong learning.

C.They could not be coming at a better time.

D.In his play, Capek imagined artificial, fully functional servants.

E.They are beginning to wheel slowly along some pavements, delivering goods or food right to people’s doors.

F.Robots have benefited from rapid innovations in smartphones.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I had tried unsuccessfully to get Frank to the dentist for a good clean. He felt that cleaning his teeth didn’t matter. Only after suffering for several days with a toothache did he finally agree, but under one condition. The dentist would have to treat him in his wheelchair. I called Dr. Bob, who was willing to satisfy my husband’s special needs.

The big day arrived. It was a hot day in June. The office was easy to locate, but parking was very limited. We decided to take our chances and parked across the street at a place with a “No Parking or Towing (拖)” sign. After parking, we walked two blocks to the office. As Dr. Bob had promised, Frank didn’t have to leave his wheelchair and after a few shots, the teeth were painlessly removed. Then we prepared to leave.

Frank uses an electric wheelchair with a breathing control system. He drives the chair by breathing through an air tube. Breathe in to go backward. Breathe out to go forward. His mouth was still too numb to control the wheelchair. Not a problem. I could drive for him.

Once outside, the chair was not responding properly. I had to push with both hands on the handlebars. I pushed the wheelchair with all my strength. The sunny day turned extremely hot with no shade between us and the car.

Exhausted, I stopped pushing. “I have to stop and rest,” I told Frank. Frank had a brilliant idea. His mouth was too numb to breathe out, but he might be able to breathe in, which would move the wheelchair backward. I agreed without hesitation.

We continued moving backward slowly up the sidewalk as I turned my head from left to right looking behind me for obstacles in our path. I noticed several cars slowing down and the people in the cars looking in our direction as they passed. Only when two ladies stopped and asked if we needed help did I realize how silly we looked.
