  • 22、   Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was a French writer and pilot who used his life experiences to write his publications. The Little Prince is one of his most famous books, selling about 140 million copies worldwide, which makes it one of the best-selling and most translated books ever published. Born in Lyon, France in 1900, Saint-Exupéry’s family was filled with nobility. His father was a manager of an insurance company who died when Saint-Exupéry was very young.

In 1915, Saint-Exupéry joined a high school in Switzerland. Due to his poor performance in class, Saint-Exupéry didn’t graduate from the boarding school in 1917. Saint-Exupéry twice tried to apply for the French Navy Cadet School. However, both times he failed the entry test. Finally, he went to a local college to study architecture. Again, due to poor grades, he didn’t complete his study.

In 1921, Saint-Exupéry decided to join the French army as a soldier. He trained as a pilot and made his first solo flight in July of that year. The next year, after he obtained his licence, he was asked to transfer to the air force. However, his fiancee(未婚妻)and her family believed that joining the air force means meeting lots of risks. In that case, they were against this staying in the military. Finally, Saint-Exupéry gave in to them and left the military. Later he took an office job in Paris.

As he had difficulty setting on a career path, Saint-Exupéry began to fly as a pilot again in 1926. It turned out that he was a successful pilot and made great contributions to his country during World War Ⅱ. Saint-Exupéry’s last flight was on 31 July, 1944. He left on a wartime mission over occupied France, from which he was never seen again.

Saint-Exupéry was honoured by the French in France and the French region of Quebec, Canada. His portraits appeared on the 50-franc notes before the introduction of the euro in France. In Lyon, his birth place, the city’s international airport was named after him.

  • 23、A new study has found that elephant seals have to work very hard to stay corpulent. Scientists paid special attention to females of the species during difficult two-month trips, or migrations, in the northeastern Pacific Ocean.

The seals were found to spend up to 20 hours every day and sometimes full 24 hours a continuous deep-diving to feed on fish. They fed 1,000 to 2,000 times daily to gain the body weight necessary for reproduction and warmth in the cold waters. Researchers studied 48 female elephant seals from Ano Nuevo State Park in California as they traveled large ocean distances. Their entire trip was around 6. 000 kilometers.

Scientists based their findings on data collected in 2011 and 2018. They used three small movable devices. The first device, attached under the jaw, counted the number of times the seals fed and measured their depth. The second satellite-linked device on the head, followed the seals' ocean movements and sensed their food. The third device was a "smart" video camera with an infra-red LED light and another depth sensor. It was also placed on their heads.

Elephant seals get their name from the large noses. These noses look like an elephant's trunk. There are two species—the northern elephant seal and the slightly larger southern elephant seal. The two are the world's biggest seals and the largest ocean mammals other than whales.

The northern male elephant seals can grow up to 4 meters long and weigh up to 2,000 kilograms. The northern females are smaller, getting up to about 3 meters in length and 590 kilograms. The males feed only in coastal waters.

Some large ocean mammals depend on deep dives to get enough food to support their large bodies. Sperm whales(抹香鲸), for example, hunt for large prey like giant squid, Female elephant seals, which are large, but not as big as sperm whales, have a different solution. They eat huge amounts of small fish. But it is hard for them to catch enough small fish to meet the energy needs of their large bodies.

    A.Fat.

    B.Distant.

    C.Deep

    D.Cautious.

【2】What is the common feature of the three devices in paragraph 3?

B.They were linked to the satellite.

    C.They followed the seals' movements.

D.They were attached to the seals' body

【3】Where does elephant seals' name come from?

    A.Their behavior.

    B.Their appearance.

    C.Their weight.

    D.Their length.

【4】What does the author mainly try to do in the last paragraph?

    A.Introduce the similarities of mammals.

B.Show the size of male and female elephant seals.

C.Advocate the conservation of sperm whales' ocean food.

D.Compare sperm whales' hunts and female elephant seals' hunts.

  • 24、People who frequently eat fruit are more likely to report greater positive mental wellbeing and are less likely to report symptoms of depression than those who do not, according to new research from the College of Health and Life Sciences, Aston University. The team also found that people who eat savoury (咸味的) snacks such as crisps (薯片), which are low in nutrients, are more likely to report greater levels of anxiety.

Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the study surveyed 428 adults from across the UK and looked at the relationship between their consumption of fruit, vegetables, sweet and savoury snacks, and their psychological health. The research found that both nutrient rich fruit and nutrient poor savoury snacks appeared to be linked to psychological health. They also found that there was no direct association between eating vegetables and psychological health. Based on the survey, the more often people ate fruit, the lower they scored for depression and the higher for mental wellbeing, independent of the overall quantity of fruit intake. By contrast, there was no link between these everyday memory lapses (差错) and fruit and vegetables intake or sweet snacks, suggesting a unique relationship between these nutrient poor savoury snacks, everyday mental lapses, and psychological health.

Lead author, PhD student Nicola-Jayne Tuck commented, “Very little is known about how diet may affect mental health and wellbeing, and while we did not directly examine causality here, our findings could suggest that frequently snacking on nutrient-poor savoury foods may increase everyday mental lapses, which in turn reduces psychological health.”

“It is possible that changing what we snack on could be a really simple way to improve our mental wellbeing. Conversely, it is also possible that the forthcoming restriction of processed snacks at checkouts, due to come in this October, could not only improve the country’s physical health, but mental health too.”

“Overall, it’s definitely worth trying to get into the habit of reaching for the fruit bowl.”

【1】Which may lead to greater level of anxiety?

    A.Vegetables.

    B.Fruit.

    C.Savoury snacks.

    D.Grain.

【2】What can we learn from paragraph 2?

A.There is a relation between the nutrient poor snacks and mental health.

B.The more fruit people eat, the lower they scored for depression.

C.Rich fruit appear not to be linked to psychological health.

D.There was a direct link between eating vegetables and psychological health.

【3】What does the underlined word “causality” in paragraph 3 refer to?

A.The relation between fruit and vegetables.

B.The close relation between exercise and health.

C.The relation between snacks and mental health.

D.The relation between diet and mental health and wellbeing.

【4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?

    A.Eating habits can prevent disease

B.Eating unhealthy snacks often is harmful to health

C.Eating vegetables often can improve mental health

D.Eating fruit often may contribute to positive mental wellbeing

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、How to help your kids find a purpose? You don’t have to start with the really big questions. Quick, what’s the meaning of life?” Many of us may not be able to answer that, but that doesn’t ______ our kids don’t have questions or need answers.

“The sense that your personal life is ______ to you is a basis of psychological well-being,” says Michael F. Steger, director of the laboratory for Meaning and Quality of Life at Colorado State University. Not only that,it is tightly tied to being happier, more positive, more ______, more caring, more helpful, more resilient (坚韧), and more satisfied in your life, relationships, and work.

But helping your kids find meaning doesn’t mean parents have to ______ all life’s ancient mysteries, Steger says. The ______ is to understand the difference between the meaning of life and the meaning in life.

“We do not have to start with the biggest and most troubling questions about our lives,” Steger says. “We can start with trying to ______ how, today, right now, we are going to do one thing that makes the story of our lives more positive, or makes a positive difference to someone else.”

With kids in ______ school, Steger says, “At the most basic level, our best hopes for our children are that they feel their lives matter and that they ______.” To start conversations along those lines, says Steger, “You can ask questions about what they think their best ______ or strengths are, whether they have good relationships with other people, whether they care about others. You can ask them about times when they have made a difference, made someone feel better, felt ______ for doing something, or helped someone out. All of these kinds of questions can start a conversation about your kid’s ______ way of being in and contributing to the world.”

In middle school, says Steger, “Kids are being exposed to ideas, behaviors, assumptions, and priorities that might be ______ different from the ones they have always assumed were true.” So for kids this age, parents can start conversations focusing on how your children’s sense of who they are, how they related to others and what life is has been ______.

By high school, according to Steger, “We hope our children see how much their lives matter, see that they are at the beginning of an exciting and strengthening life story, and have some slight ideas about ______.”   But the question of what you want to do with your life is too big for a single conversation, says Steger. Instead, he encourages parents to have ______, smaller conversations with their kids about how they view themselves and their lives, and what kind of impact they would like to make.
