21、 William Lindesay has been interested in the Great Wall of China since seeing it in a school atlas(地图册)as a child in England. I vividly recall seeing in the " Oxford School Atlas" the Great Wall with its battlement symbol. From that moment, I had in my mind that when I grew up I'd go to China and walk along the Great Wall from end to end.
Lindesay's about 3 ,000-km solo run along the Great Wall began in 1987. Running the length of the wall was a brave expedition, venturing into sparsely populated regions where there was little chance of help if the runner had an accident. During another trip, Lindesay and his team ventured deep into the Gobi Desert of Mongolia. The explorers almost died from dehydration(脱水) . In total, Lindesay estimates in an interview that he has spent about 1,600 days of his life, or four full years, on the Great Wall in all seasons.
Lindesay and his wife, Wu Qi, whom he got to know and fell in love with during his trips in China, had a farmhouse at the foot of the wall. During his exploration, he noticed some sections of the wall were badly damaged and covered with litter. Modernization and development were making the situation even worse. "Some people say it will take generations to change; I say we don't have generations of time. It's got to be much quicker, " he said. Lindesay always carries a garbage bag with him in the wilderness, picking litter along the way. Lindesay uses a garbage bag as his calling card. The cloth bag bears a set of nine simple guidelines in Chinese, which calls on people to observe while traveling or camping outdoors : "Take your own garbage home" "Pick up? litter left by othersDon't damage plants or flowers, or pick fruit" and lots more.

22、Wendy Bennett was appointed the executive director of AgSafe four years ago. Initially, she was unsure she had the skills and abilities needed to do the job. “There was nothing short of terror,” she said. “I certainly didn't have the educational background for it, although I have a good education.”
Despite seeking the help of a formal mentor (导师),Wendy still felt she could improve—this is when she decided she wanted to pursue further education. She saw UFred's Executive MBA program run by the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), of which she is a member. Wendy said that along with the coursework, learning from her peers and classmates and using their examples helped make her organization stronger and better. With her EMBA from UFred, Wendy believes she can now perform her job with confidence, and that it' s also benefited the people she works with.
“I really believe that I have an opportunity to help my organization to grow and to be really successful in the future,” she said. Wendy’s classroom experience gave her the confidence to communicate effectively to every level of her organization. She also sees a difference in how she deals with not only staff, but also in how she interacts with board members. She said the ability to be convincing and speak properly with regards to governance and how a board of directors can function excellently is something she previously wasn't as skilled in.
“I can work with my board of directors to do a better job with strategic planning to move our organization into the future,” she said. While Wendy admits the EMBA program is a lot of work, it's satisfying at the end of the day.

23、Imagine you are in your final days of study in Budapest. So, on your last weekend, you plan a train trip from Budapest to Prague. You only have a couple of days to make the trip.
You buy a ticket leaving on a Friday night. But after your last class, your professor offers a dinner to congratulate you with a celebration. You have to agree, but your eye is always on the clock.
Dinner takes longer than you thought it would and finally you thank him and say you have a train to catch. But he insists you stay for a quick dessert and offers to drive you to the station. You figure that if he drives you, you will have just enough time to catch your train. But after the dessert, he remembers, “Oh, I didn’t drive. How silly of me!” leaving you to hurry to the station.
Unfortunately, the train—your train—is pulling away. And there won’t be another one until the next night. You have missed your train. And that brings us to our expression for today: That train has left the station.
If you like expressions about boats, you can also say “That ship has sailed” or that someone has “missed the boat”. They are all used the same way.
Besides missing an opportunity, all of these expressions could be used in another situation: When events have been put into place and there is no stopping them.
For example, let’s say your mother wants to fix you up with the nice child of her boss. She arranges the date without talking to you first. You don’t want to go, but she has already told her boss you would. She can say “Sorry, but the train has already left the station. You must go on that date.”
【1】Why does the professor invite you to have a dinner?
A.To give you a lift to the station.
B.To have an academic discussion with him.
C.To express his thanks for your help.
D.To celebrate you have finished study.
【2】In which of the following situations can you say “The train has left. You cannot stop it”?
A.You passed your College Entrance Examination through your hardwork.
B.You couldn’t make a decision to do volunteering work.
C.You had to make a speech but you had no notice ahead and no preparation.
D.You gave up an opportunity to have dinner with your professor.
【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The child of your mother’s boss is very intelligent.
B.Your mother wants to find a job for you in her company.
C.Your mother plans a trip for you with her boss’s child.
D.Your mother wants to build a close relationship with her boss.

A.No matter what is said or done.
B.All good things come to an end.
C.Kill two birds with one stone.
D.Strike the iron while it is hot.
24、In southwestern Spain, the Donana National Park is known as the nation’s crown jewel. It is a protected wetlands area home to many animals, including hundreds of thousands of birds that visit it for the winter. Many others use it as a stopping place during migration. Five kinds of threatened birds, including the Spanish imperial eagle, live in Donana.
Now, after a summer of record-high temperatures and little rain, the wetlands are dry and smelly. Most fish and birds are gone. Bodies of water called lagoons (泻湖) are at the heart of the park. Most dry up and refill throughout the year. Santa Olalla is the park’s biggest lagoon. It traditionally has water year round. In the summer, it provides water to needy plants and animals. But this year, Santa ODlalla dried up.
Diaz is a biologist who studies the park. She stepped into the park with a little bit of water and said to a reporter, “Seeing this last bit of water makes me think that the entire park is dry. The time to save the park was 20 years ago, but nothing was done.” She added, “The environment always loses against the economy.” According to Diaz, the development of those cities around the park and farms in other areas are putting pressure on the wetlands.
For example, Matalascanas, once a quiet fishing village, now a popular center for beach vacations, requires too much water from Donana, which is making some of the park’s lagoons go dry. Farther away, in the area called Huelva, traditional Spanish olive crops have been replaced by berry farms. The berries bring in more money than olives, but they require more water to grow.
According to wildlife expert Felipe, there are thousands of illegal wells in the area taking ground water without permission, severely affecting the water resources of the wetlands. He stressed, “Besides the dry weather, the park is also suffering from poor supervision.”
Spain’s government is working on how to close some of the wells and considering projects that would send some water from rivers in other parts of the country to help bring life back to Donana.
