二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The idea of “The Bookman” was born at the same time as Sam's daughter. An English teacher for 17 years, before that a journalist, Sam took parental leave to be at home with his new baby. “I was thinking what I can do to keep my brain ticking over, to maybe bring in some money,” explains Sam. “A glass of red wine later and I suddenly had it. I love books. Books have driven everything I've done.” Then he began to work as a bookman.

However, he didn't want to follow the standard book subscription model where everybody who signs up receives the same collection of books. Instead, he buys his books from independent booksellers and subscribers receive books that are selected just for them, depending on their own personalities. The model becomes a real hit and his customer base stretches across Europe, ranging in age from 4 to 95.

“The Bookman is all about sitting down with you and finding out what you like. It's not about what I like or what I think you should read. It's a personalised service.” Sam's consultation service is offered over the phone, by Zoom or through an email questionnaire.

During the pandemic (疫情), he offered free books to those who couldn't go out. “People in tough times are helpless, when they are starved of company, and desirable books are just for them. I want to do something that might make people feel better. Sam said. By the end of that first lockdown, he'd given out 350 books. Meanwhile, he got a lot back from it himself—lots of grateful cards and letters from extremely lovely people who were on their own and appreciated the company of a book.

He won't ever stop being The Bookman, picking out books for strangers, books he hopes they will love, books driven by his own passion for reading and sharing stories.

【2】What is special about Sam's service model?

    A.Conservative.

    B.Conventional.

    C.Updated.

    D.Tailored.

【3】What can we learn from Sam's experience in the pandemic?

    A.Grasp all, lose all.

    B.Love me, love my dog.

    C.Nothing seek, nothing find.

    D.Rose presented, smell remains.

【4】What does the text mainly tell us?

    A.Books are the best company.

    B.A bookman offered free books.

C.Books are the source of inspiration.

D.A bookman created a subscription model.

  • 22、The journey of a hi-tech message in a bottle has revealed the damage of plastic (塑料) pollution — as it was tracked more than 1,700 miles in a few months.

British researchers put GPS and satellite tags in 25 plastic bottles, and left them to drift (漂流) in the river Ganges(恒河) and Bay of Bengal (孟加拉湾) in India. Using mobile phones and satellite networks, the team tracked the containers across the sea — with one crossing 1,768 miles in just 94 days.

They hope the tech could be a “powerful tool” for raising awareness and changing behaviour. “Our message in a bottle tag shows how far and how fast plastic pollution can move,” said lead author Dr Emily Duncan, of the University of Exeter. “This is a truly global issue, as a piece of plastic dropped in a river or ocean could soon be washed up on the other side of the world,” she said. “Bottles in the Ganges moved in stages and got stuck — but once at sea covered greater distances, following coastal currents before dispersing (扩散) more widely.”

The 500ml containers were made the size, shape and buoyancy (浮力) of one normal plastic drink bottle to copy the movement of real rubbish. And open source hardware was used for the electronics inside, meaning researchers can “copy, modify or improve the solution we presented to track other plastics,” the team said.

“This could be used to teach about plastic pollution in schools, with children able to see where their bottle goes,” said another researcher. “Data from these tags could feed into global models to give us a clearer picture of how plastic moves across the ocean and where it ends up.”

【1】Why did the researchers put GPS and satellite tags in the bottles?

A.To learn the bottles’ travel route.

B.To measure the bottles’ drifting time.

C.To prevent the bottles from being lost.

D.To test the satellite network technology.

【2】What can be inferred about plastic pollution according to Emily Duncan?

    A.It has caused global concern.

    B.It can’t be effectively monitored.

C.It spreads more quickly than expected.

D.It can be controlled in the early stage.

【3】What can we know about the bottles used in the research?

A.They are full of real rubbish.

B.They are of the same shape.

C.They won’t get stuck at sea.

    D.They have more buoyancy.

【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.The benefit of the research.

    B.The findings of the team.

    C.The tracks of the bottles.

    D.The importance of data analysis.

  • 23、Are you addicted to computer games? Do you stay up all night playing them? Do you feel happy after you play computer games?

There’s no doubt that the excitement and appealing of games these days makes them hard to put down. We are attracted by the choice when it comes to gaming: You can role playcreating your own fantasy characters and stories, giving you a chance to step out of everyday life into an imaginary world. And there are shooting games where you can let out your anger and depression in violent situations where you kill people with guns. You can get excited from the games.

However, can these kinds of games really be fun and can being absorbed in virtual reality be good for us? Should we worry about their effects on our health? Popular games like Grand Theft Auto have been blamed for everything from falling results at school to causing acts of extreme violence. Internet safety adviser, Alan MacKenzie, thinks “any people understandably will just think that a game is just a game and not realizing the exact content that’s in there”. He gives an example of the violence, which he says is “wholly inappropriate for anybody, not to mention children.”

Others will argue that gaming is a harmless form of entertainment. There is evidence that playing video games could actually be good for us. Some games like Game of Thrones and World of Warcraft are educational and using games certainly can help children learn good qualities. Studies have also shown that the skills used in playing games can cause growth in certain areas of the brain, the ability to think in 3D and even improve our eyesight.

Video game players are also no longer just simple creatures. For some, gaming is having a positive effect on their social lives with games like Halo and World of Warcraft often being played in groups. When your group works together to win the game, your sense of achievement is higher than when winning by yourself.

So every coin has two sides. It seems today, gaming isn’t just for game fans and if used in a proper way, we can all take part. If video games have two sides, what side do you stand by?

【1】The writer used a lot of questions at the beginning to ________.

    A. show his worries about the effect on health

    B. lead into the topic of the passage

    C. ask the reader for their own opinions about games

    D. doubt the advantage of playing computer games

    A. the contents of the game are complex

    B. games contain extreme violence

    C. popular games lead to students’ falling results at school

【3】According to the passage, which of the following shows the good influence on social lives?

【4】In Paragraph 4, the author supports his idea ________.

    A. by giving some examples

    B. with descriptive words

    C. by providing some numbers

    D. with some research results

  • 24、To learn to think is to learn to question. Those who don't question never truly think for themselves. These are simple rules that have governed the advancement of science and human thought since the beginning of time. Advancements are made when thinkers question theories and introduce new ones. Unfortunately, it is often the great and respected thinkers who end up slowing the progress of human thought. Aristotle was a brilliant philosopher whose theories explained much of the natural world, often incorrectly. He was so esteemed by the scientific community that even 1,200 years after his death, scientists were still trying to build upon his mistakes rather than correct them!

Brilliant minds can intimidate upandcoming thinkers who are not confident of their abilities. They often believe they are inferior to the minds of giants such as Aristotle, leading many to accept current paradigms instead of questioning them.

I, like many thinkers of the past, once believed in my mental inferiority. I was certain that my parents, my teachers—adults in general—were always right. They were like a textbook to me; I didn't question what was written on those pages. I respected them, and accepted whatever they told me. But that attitude soon changed. My mind's independence was first stimulated in the classroom.

A stern, 65yearold elementaryschool science teacher once told me that light is a type of wave. I confidently went through years of school believing that light is a wave. One day, however I heard the German exchange student mention that light could be made up of particles. As the others laughed at his statement, I started to question my beliefs.

Maybe the teachers and textbooks hadn't given me the whole story. I went to the library, did some research and learned of the lightasawave versus lightasaparticle debate. I read about Einstein's discovery of the dual nature of light and learned the facts of a paradox(悖论) that puzzles the world's greatest thinkers to this day. Light behaves as both a particle and a wave, it is both at once. I realized I had gone through life accepting only half of the story as the whole truth.

Each new year brought more new facts, and I formulated even more questions. I found myself in the library after school, trying to find my own answers to gain a more complete understanding of what I thought I already knew. I discovered that my parents and teachers are incredible tools in my quest for knowledge, but they are never the final word. Even textbooks can be challenged. I learned to question my sources, I learned to be a thinker. I once believed that everything I learned at home and at school was certain, but I have now discovered to reexamine when necessary.

Questions are said to be the path to knowledge and truth, and I plan to continue questioning. How many things do we know for sure today that we will question in the future? At this moment, I know that our sun will burn for another five billion years, and I know nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole. This knowledge, however, may change in the next 20 years—maybe even in the next two. The one thing we can control now is our openness to discovery. Questions are the tools of open minds, and open minds are the key to intellectual advancement.

1In the first paragraph, Aristotle is taken as an example to show that ________.

    A. he is the greatest and respected philosopher of all time

    B. huge influence of great thinkers may block human thought

    C. advancements are made when thinkers question theories

    D. great thinkers often make mistakes and then correct them

2What does the underlined word “intimidate” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Frighten.   B. Encourage.   C. Strength.   D. Persuade.

3The author began to question his previous beliefs because ________.

    A. what he learned from textbooks before turned out to be wrong

    B. he was inspired by the different ideas from an exchange student

    C. he was laughed at by other students for his unacceptable statement

    D. he was not satisfied with his life and desperate to achieve success

4According to the passage, the author ________.

    A. looks down upon great thinkers all the time

    B. never doubts what he has learned in the textbook

    C. always throws himself into the laboratory

    D. determines to be a thinker and questioner

5We can conclude from the last paragraph that ________.

    A. the author is not quite sure about his future

    B. we human beings don't dare to predict future

    C. questioning is necessary to promote advancement

    D. the theory of black holes will change in two years

6What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A. Following rules.   B. Challenging yourself.

    C. Questioning giants.   D. Predicting future.
