二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、People often wonder about some of the best places to see. A good point of reference is to first look at attractions labeled as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These sites are culturally or physically significant places listed by the United Nations for their importance to humanity as a whole. Let’s see some of them!

    The Mogao Caves, China

Also known as the Mogao Grottoes, the caves are located along the cliffside (峭璧) above the Daquan River in Gansu province. First built in 366 and comprising 492 caves, the Mogao Caves are known as the biggest collection of Buddhist art in the world. As a landmark or the historic Silk Road, the Mogao Caves are a perfect display of Chinese art history over a period of a thousand years.

    Redwood National Park, US

Lying in the mountainous region north of San Francisco in California, US. the Redwood National Park is significant for its collection of redwood trees — the tallest and oldest trees in the world — as well as its variety of sea and land wildlife. Once abundant throughout the temperate (气候温和) regions of the world, the Redwood trees of California are among the only living examples left of this old plant species, a biological group which has existed for 160 million years.

    Machu Picchu, Peru

Situated in the Andes Mountains, this fascinating ancient city is remarkable both for its beautiful setting as well as its use of complex city planning. Standing at 2,430 meters above sea level, the city of Machu Picchu is covered with both mist and mystery. Researchers have yet to uncover the city’s role in the Incan (印加族的) empire’s use of astronomy and plant domestication (驯化).

【1】What can you learn from the Mogao caves?

A.They were built on steep cliff.

B.They have the largest art collection.

C.They were built five centuries ago.

    D.They perfectly exhibited art history.

【2】Why is Redwood National Park important?

A.Because it lies in the mountainous region.

B.Because it has a number of redwood trees.

C.Because it has a temperate and mild climate.

D.Because it has various tallest and oldest trees.

【3】What do we know about Machu Picchu?

A.Its high altitude makes the place well-known.

B.Its complex city planning enjoys the best fame.

C.The mist surrounding the city added to its beauty.

D.The Incan culture is still a mystery for researchers.

  • 22、A year ago, I had one of the most important interviews of my life.【1】To this question I could say what I thought the members of the interview wanted to hear. I’m so good at multitasking that I would be able to shoulder the various responsibilities. That might be true, yet it seemed to be unreal. The more honest answer was that I knew it would be difficult, but I wanted to try anyway.【2】

This tough situation led me to hesitate during the interview. It also recalled my past experience of being interviewed when an interviewer asked me to give an example of a time when I had been caring. The answer that came to mind was that I volunteered at a nursing home and felt honored to sit with the patients and listen to their stories. But I didn’t think that was dramatic enough to impress the interviewers. So, instead I told them about when one of the residents threw up, I cleaned it up.【3】Obviously, that wasn’t caring and it suggested that my best quality was skillful at using mop (拖把).

Back to my most recent interview and the question about how to shoulder the multiple responsibilities of the role.【4】I had learned the significance of being true to myself. So I answered simply, “With difficulty.” To my relief, the review members nodded knowingly and smiled. This exam can test my honesty and I can come up with appropriate answers.

I’ve come to realize that interviews don’t have “right" or “wrong" answers. I still see them as exams, but they’re not testing my ability to copy somebody else’s answers. Actually, the exam is about something I am well familiar with: me.【5】

A.I hesitated but not for long.

B.I wasn’t sure which answer to give.

C.Never give the interviewers wrong answers.

D.It seemed the interviewers were quite satisfied.

E.I immediately felt embarrassed after saying that.

F.It’s not about “right” answers but about being yourself.

G.At the end, I was asked how to balance the different parts of the role.

  • 23、My parents had been married less than two years when my dad was diagnosed with ALS. Making a decision regarding whether or not to start a family was difficult at the time, but due to their faith and positive outlook, they chose to do so. Had they not shared the same optimism, my older brother John would not be here, and I would not be writing this today. To say that I am thankful for their decision is an understatement. My dad has had a long battle with ALS and is still fighting after 26 years.

As a child, my parents did everything in their power to keep things as normal as possible for my brother and me. Unfortunately, I have very few memories of my dad when he was still able to walk because of how young I was when he lost that ability. However, I can confidently say that as a girl, my childhood felt completely normal. Our friends came over a lot. John and I were very involved in sports, and my parents were at every game.

ALS isn’t just a deadly disease — it is incurable. Most patients do not live even close to 26 years like my father has been able to. ALS is also a lonely disease, for both the patients and caregivers, as they go through hardships those around them will rarely understand. My mom is his primary caregiver, and my brother and I help out as much as we can. She is a remarkable mother and wife, the backbone of our family, and none of us would be here without her.

Dad is the strongest person I know. He has overcome his physical limitations due to how strong he is mentally. Every day is a battle, and every day he fights hard. He truly believes every day is a gift. Some days are worse than others, but he would rarely ley you know. It takes a certain kind of faith, will, ambition, and strength to handle such a desperate diagnosis, and he has never faltered (退缩).

【1】How does the author feel about her parents’ choice of starting a family?

    A.Grateful.

    B.Indifferent.

    C.Angry.

    D.Regretful.

【2】What does the author intend to stress about her parents in Paragraph 2?

    A.Their optimistic attitude.

    B.Their family values.

    C.Their love for children.

    D.Their difficult situations.

【3】Which of the following words can best describe the author’s mom?

    A.Determined and caring.

    B.Humorous and knowledgeable.

    C.Talented and demanding.

    D.Generous and strict.

【4】What can be concluded from the family’s story?

A.Hardships and difficulties are unavoidable in life.

B.One has to learn to shoulder responsibility courageously.

C.The presence of parents is important to children’s development.

D.Inner strength and family support can help overcome physical limitations.

  • 24、There is no doubt eCommerce is growing, and it will continue to grow. However, physical stores would not die as a result of the rise of eCommerce, at least not in the near future. The idea that eCommerce is taking over physical stores has already misguided many people. Physical stores are far from vanishing, and there are some solid reasons for it.

The projections for online spending is optimistic with $150 billion expected to be spent in the coming three years, yet we are also expecting $300 billion in spending at physical stores in the same duration. Do you still think that physical-store shopping is too small to sustain the eCommerce blow?

Even though consumers are staying away from physical stores that follow older concepts, yet we are seeing the rise of fresh concept stores all around the US. We are seeing innovative and attractive success stories of physical stores, ranging from clothes stores to restaurants to health spas. It would be easy to assume that this trend will continue.

Indeed, many shopping malls are dying, yet there are still those shopping centers that are performing well. You can see this for yourself by visiting shopping malls near you. What I want to emphasize here is that not all shopping centers are made equal, just like not all eCommerce retailers are made equal. Both shopping malls and eCommerce sites can lose business if they fail to maintain productivity through improvements and innovations. When you visit shopping centers that are serious about their business, you would see their shops and parking lots packed.

On the other hand, even e-tailers like Amazon have experimented with pop-up shopping concepts. It is important to bear in mind that consumers prefer face-to-face interactions instead of online interactions during shopping, meaning that physical stores are going to stay there.

Still, eCommerce retailers are seeing all of their excitement disappear as they settle the sales tax problem associated with e-tailing. As of now, five states of America have already imposed sales tax on purchases through eCommerce sites, and e-tailers in those states have already witnessed 6 to 12 percent decrease in sales.

This reinforces the fact that physical stores are here to stay, and if you are still undervaluing their growth, you are omitting a huge chunk of the retail representation.

【1】The underlined word "projections" in Paragraph 2 probably means____.

    A.intentions

    A.E-tailers are more creative businesses.

B.Fresh concepts help build good business.

C.Fewer consumers will visit physical stores.

D.Physical stores can’t stand the blow of eCommerce.

【3】What is the best title for this passage?

A.Is Offline Spending Greater Than Online Spending?

    B.Online Stores V.S. Physical Stores — What’s the Difference?

D.Does eCommerce Success Mean Physical Stores Will Disappear?

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

You would think that after hearing Mom and Dad talking about The Trip for a year, I would be eager to go. But I didn’t even want to think about it. “Aren’t you excited?” asked Dad, looking up from his laptop. “This is the trip of a lifetime. I’ll bet none of your friends will be driving across the United States this summer.”

Exactly, I thought. Nobody I knew was going to pile into an old van, and drive from California to New York and back in 58 days. Fifty — eight days! That was practically my whole summer! But I knew it was useless to protest.

When Dad was offered a summer off for the first time in his career, he said that he would always dreamed of driving across the country. So we were going. That was Dad’s chance.

I picked up my cat, Max, and buried my face in his fur. He pawed at my ears playfully. Goodbye, summer vacation. Goodbye, diving at the lake. Goodbye to hanging out and doing absolutely nothing. Good bye, Max. I was going to miss this ball of fur. I put him down and laughed as he batted a button across the floor like a soccer player. He was interested in all small objects.

The closer the trip got, the harder it was going to ignore. Thick envelopes arrived from places like Indiana, Tennessee and Arkansas. Night after night, Mom and Dad huddled around the computer, plotting every inch of our 8,000-mile journey.

Three days after school got out, The Trip finally came. Everything was packed and ready to go. Mom said that we are supposed to leave at 9 a. m. But when Dad noticed a wet spot under the van, I realized we wouldn’t be going anywhere for a while. Dad crawled under the van. Car parts sprang up around the van like mushrooms.

Minutes turned into hours. By the time Dad gave Mom the news, it was late afternoon. “I fixed the leak.” said Dad, “But now I couldn’t find one of the fan bolts (螺栓).” Mom organized a search, but in vain.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右。

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Dad called the stores but none carried the bolt that fitted this old van.
