二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In May this year, as part of our 150th anniversary, we asked readers aged between 18 and 25 to enter an essay competition. The task was to tell us, in no more than 1,000 words, what scientific advance they would most like to see in their lifetimes, and why it mattered to them.

The response was phenomenal: we received 661 entries. Some entrants hoped that science would make their lifetimes much longer than they can currently expect. Many looked forward to work that will end climate change. Others wanted to see advances in our understanding of human history, crop growth, space exploration, and medical technologies. The ideas were inspiring.

The winner is a compelling essay by Yasmin Ali, a PhD student at the University of Nottingham, UK. Ali submitted a piece on Beethoven, her brother’s hearing loss and the science which she hoped would one day cure it. It stood out to the judges as a reminder of why many scientists do research: to make the world better tomorrow than it is today.

All essays were judged by a group of Nature editors. The top ten submissions were then ranked by three members of a separate judging group: Magdalena Skipper, editor-in-chief of Nature; Faith Osier, a researcher; and Jess Wade, a physicist. All submissions were kept anonymous throughout the process.

We also selected two runners-up(非冠军的获奖者).Physicist Robert Schittko at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, proposes that nuclear fusion(核聚变) could offer a solution to the climate crisis, in a piece that effortlessly mixes grand ambition with gentle humour. And chemist Matthew Zajac at the University of Chicago in Illinois wrote a powerful personal account of why he wants to see advances in the field of same-sex reproduction.

The results show that today’s young scientists have a wealth of ideas, talent and conviction that research can transform their world. We look forward to seeing what they do next.

    【1】What’s the essay competition about?

    A.The scientific expectation.

    B.The fantastic scientific ideas.

    C.The dreams of future life.

    D.The celebration of anniversary.

【2】Why Yasmin Ali was chosen the winner?

A.She showed great talent in music.

B.She found the cure for the loss of hearing.

C.She appealed for people to care about hearing loss problem.

D.She reminded people to remember the meaning of science development.

【3】What can we learn about the result of the essay competition?

A.Robert Schittko won the second place.

B.There were two winners in the essay competition.

C.Matthew Zajac presented his view of same-sex reproduction.

D.The two runners-up were selected for the same field they chose.

【4】What is the author’s attitude to the competitors’ ideas about science expectations?

    A.Doubtful.

  • 22、Less than one year after France imposed a nationwide ban on smoking in most public places, it will, from Jan. 1, 2009, extend the ban to bars, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs—and the most cherished of all: cafés.

Ireland and Italy show that countries with long-standing smoking traditions may introduce bans fairly smoothly, as they did in 2004 and 2005. In Germany, where regulations vary locally, Berlin will join France on Jan 1. But fierce critics of the new law in France say it all but destroys the café's basic function: to serve as the socio-economic glue of society.

Cécile Perez, owner of La Fronde, a typical Parisian neighborhood café, said: “In the morning, street cleaners in bright green uniforms sip coffee next to well-dressed businessmen; at lunch hour, working-class types rub shoulders with those of the latest fashion at the bar, while couples of all ages rub noses over salads; during the after-work rush, there is a steady soundtrack of clinking glasses combined with conversation; the constant, no matter what time of day, is the smoke that drifts through the air in curls and clouds, seemingly unnoticed.”

“Our motto in France is: liberty, equality, fraternity,” Olivier Seconda, a regular at the café, said. “The café is the place that represents that. You’re free to smoke, everyone pays the same price for a beer and different kinds of people talk with one another. This new law goes against that.”

Seconda expects the ban to be felt even more strongly in small villages far from Paris, where the café is often the only means of social activity. “People already miss the space that allows people of all walks of life to share something—even if it is sometimes no more than a few words and the smoke floating between them.”

【1】Cécile Perez mentions the curls and clouds of smoke drifting through the air to ______.

    Adescribe a friendly atmosphere

Bshow the beauty of his own café

    Csupport the ban on smoking

    Dremind us of something unnoticed

    【2】Olivier Seconda implies that ______.

Athe café provides people with enough liberty, equality, and fraternity

Bpeople, regardless of their social classes, enjoy equal rights in a café

Cthe new ban on café smoking should be put in effect only in villages

Dpeople would not find fun in a café without smoking a cigarette

【3】The passage is written to _______.

Ashow the writer’s personal opinion against a new law

Bprovide information for law-makers to pass a new law

Ctell why some people are unhappy about smoking ban in cafés

Dcompare attitudes to a law, held by people from different countries

  • 23、According to researchers, money can buy happiness, but only if you spend it on someone else.

Spending as little as $5 a day on someone else could significantly bring you happiness, the team at the University of British Columbia and Harvard Business School found.

Their experiments on more than 630 Americans showed they were measurably(适度地) happier when they spent money on others---even if they thought spending the money on themselves would make them happier.

"We wanted to test our theory that how people spend their money is at least as important as how much money they earn," said Elizabeth Dunn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia.

They asked their 600 volunteers first to rate their general happiness, report their annual income and detail their monthly spending including bills, gifts for themselves, gifts for others and donations to charity(慈善机构).

"Regardless of how much income each person made, those who spent money on others reported greater happiness, while those who spent more on themselves did not," Dunn said in a statement.

Dunn's team also surveyed(调查)16 employees at a company in Boston before and after they received an annual profit-sharing bonus(奖金) of between $3,000 and $8,000.

"Employees who devoted more of their bonus to pro-social(有益社会的) spending experienced greater happiness after receiving the bonus, and the manner in which they spent that bonus was a more important predictor(预示) of their happiness than the size of the bonus itself," they wrote in their report, published in the journal Science.

They gave their volunteers $5 or $20 and half got clear instructions on how to spend it.Those who spent the money on someone or something else reported feeling happier about it.

"These findings suggest that very minor alterations(改动) in spending allocations(分配) --- as little as $5 --- may be enough to produce real gains in happiness on a given day," Dunn said.

    【1】 According to the passage,_____________.

    A. the more money you spend on others, the happier you are

    B. spending money on others can bring you happiness

    C. Elizabeth Dunn is a psychologist from Harvest Business School

    D. six hundred volunteers took part in the experiment

2The 16 employees mentioned in the passage _________.

    A. were given clear instructions on how to spend the bonus

    B. had more happiness than the size of the bonus itself

    C. experienced greater happiness after receiving their bonus

    D. felt happier after they contributed much of the bonus to charities

    3Dunn’s statement suggested that ______________.

A.those who spent money on others felt happier no matter how much they earned

B.those who spent more money on themselves felt happier

C.people thought spending money could make themselves happier

D.the money spent was as important as the money earned

4The best title of this passage is ___________.

    A. Experiment on Money Spending

    B. Devoting Your Money to Charities

    C. Spending Money on Others Makes One Happier

    D. Bonus and Pro-social Spending

  • 24、Michele Gentile, an Italian bookseller, is offering free books to children in exchange for plastic bottles to recycle.

Michele owns Ex Libris Cafe in Polla,a small town in southern Italy. He said he thought of the recycling program, because he wanted to inspire children in the small town to read and pay attention to the environment.

'My goal is to spread the passion and love for books among those people in Italy who do not usually read while at the time helping the environment," Gentile explained.

The idea for the initiative (倡议) came after Gentile collaborated with a nearby middle school on an aluminum recycling project. Working together, the schoolchildren and Gentile collected enough cans to purchase books for an entire classroom. His new program too off from there and has already spread into northern Italy: Gentile's hopes his work will continue to make headlines and become a worldwide initiative.

The free books come from customers in Gentile's shop who have donated money to purchase a 'suspended" book. The idea comes from a World War II practice in which customers would buy two Coffees: one for themselves and another for the next person in line. Gentile has been using the extra books as part of his recycling initiative,

While Gentile's program is a great way to recycle and get kids to read, it also brings awareness to the growing problem of plastic waste. Single-use plastics make up around 26 percent of all the plastics in the world, only 14 percent of which are recycled. Plastics that end up in landfills take around 500 years to decompose (分解),is a major concern for environmentalists.

Cutting down on plastic waste is important if we want to better the environment for future generations, and recycling programs like Gentile's book giveaway are a great way to meet that goal.

【1】What is the purpose of Gentile's book giveaway?

A.To sell more coffee and books.

    B.To attract more customers.

C.To collect money for a new project.

    D.To inspire reading and recycling.

【2】How did Gentile come up with the idea?

A.Working with a school to recycle cans.

B.Seeing school kids don't like reading.

C.Donating books for a local school.

    D.Buying a “suspended” book for a child.

【3】Who pay for the books of the project?

    A.The local government.

    B.Gentile himself.

    C.Some publishers.

    D.His customers.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.An Italian's Reading Initiative

B.Recycling Can Get Kids Free Books

    C.Michele's Way of Doing Business

D.A New Way to Deal with Plastic Waste

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Katie was exceptionally small. We were in the fifth grade, but she was as short as a third grader. Although her body was small, Katie was big at heart. She had a sharp mind, too. Sometimes she got her share of teasing, but Katie knew how to handle it. All the kids who knew Katie liked her a lot.

Katie loved helping others in the class, so whenever someone was stuck on the computer he always called her for help and advice. Katie loved jokes and she always had a joke that would cheer someone up whenever he was down. She was truly the most kind and generous friend anyone could ask for.

But the other day she was in big trouble. She was such a sweet kid; a third-grade teacher always dreamed of having a classroom filled with students like Katie. She was never ever a discipline problem. I just couldn't imagine why she had made her parents so angry.

It seemed that Katie had been running up sizable charges in the lunchroom. Her parents explained that Katie brought a great homemade lunch each day, and there was no reason for her to buy school lunch. They assumed a sit-down with Katie would solve the problem, but failed. So they asked me to help them get to the bottom of this situation.

So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. “Why are you charging lunches, Katie? What happens to your homemade lunch?” I asked. “I lose it,” she responded. I leaned back in my chair and said, “I don't believe you, Katie.” She didn't care. “Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie?” I took a new track. “No. I just lose it,” she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.

    注意:

    1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;

    3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

    4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。

    Paragraph 1:

The problem was still unsolved the next week until I noticed a boy in the school canteen.

    Paragraph 2:

Katie asked me not to tell her parents.
