21、What's the most important thing in life?
People's answers vary greatly. For British scientist Robert Edwards, the answer is having a child. "Nothing is more special than a child," he told the BBC.
Edwards, the inventor of the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) technology—more commonly known as "test-tube (试管) baby" technology—passed away on April 10, 2013 at the age of 87.
"Edwards changed the lives of millions of ordinary people who now rejoice (高兴) in the gift of their own child," said Peter Braude, a professor at King's College London. "He leaves the world a much better place."
Edwards started his experiments as early as the 1950s, when he had just finished his PhD in genetics. At that time, much of the public viewed test-tube babies as "scary", according to Mark Sauer, a professor at Columbia University, US.
Edwards and his colleague Patrick Steptoe faced opposition from churches, governments and media, not to mention attacks from many of their fellow scientists. "People said that we should not play God and we should not interfere with nature," Edwards once told Times. He said that he felt "quite alone" at the time.
"But Edwards was a fighter, and he believed in what he was doing," said Sauer. Without support from the government, the two struggled to raise funds to carry on. And in 1968 they finally developed a method to successfully fertilize human eggs outside the body.
The first test-tube baby was born on July 25, 1978. Her name was Is Louise Brown. Despite people's safety concerns, Brown was just as healthy as other children.
"IVF had moved from vision to reality and a new era in medicine had begun," BBC commented.
Ever since then, public opinion has evolved considerably. Couples who were unable to have babies began thronging (拥向) to Edwards' clinic. Nowadays, Reuters reports, some 4.3 million other "test-tube" children exist. Edwards received a Nobel Prize in 2010 and was knighted (封为爵士) by Queen Elizabeth in the following year.
Before his death, Edwards was still in touch with Louise. "He is like a grand dad to me," she said in an interview with the Daily Mail.
He is a granddad to millions, in fact.

23、I still occasionally find myself amazed at the details our ears and brains can pick up on. My quiet work time was recently interrupted by a person in the room next door. I couldn’t see them, but I knew exactly what they were doing: cracking their knuckles(指关节). It’s such a distinctive sound, but what’s really surprising is that it’s so loud. The sound generated is noticeably different from that of creaking hips or knees--it’s specific to fingers. What’s going on? Joint cracking is the sort of thing that everyone has an opinion on and mine is: I can’t do it, and I wouldn’t want to. I have occasionally made the mistake of mentioning this during talks to school kids. 【1】
The usual suspect in the infraction is the joint at the base of each finger. People pull their finger away from the rest of their hand until there’s a deep, muffled click. When medical imaging finally improved to the point where it could spy on the inside of a finger during the process, the true culprit was revealed: a bubble.
At the joint, one bone has a curved bulge(凸起)which sits snugly in a shallow cup forming the base of the next bone up. 【2】 It’s viscous and sticky, and it keeps the joint running smoothly. If you pull on a finger this gap gets gradually wider so that the fluid is now in tension because it’s pulled in both directions.
For those with the right sort of joint to make the cracking sound, the drama is sudden. X-rays and MRI scans show that at the moment of cracking, a gas-filled cavity pops into existence in the synovial fluid(滑液),relieving the tension in the liquid. Gas which had been dissolved in the liquid comes rushing in to fill this new gap. Once the bubble exists, it just sits there until the gas redissolves into the surrounding liquid. 【3】 A bubble already exists, and it’s easy to stretch it as the joint extends without making another one.
【4】 This has been revealed, both by systematic scientific studies and by allergist Donald L. Unger. For his lifelong effort on the subject, Dr. Unger was awarded the 2009Ig Nobel Prize. As a child Dr. Unger was criticized for his cracking habits, so he conducted his own stubborn experiment, cracking the knuckles on his right hand--but not on his left-every day for 60 years. By the time he was 83, neither hand had arthritis. But the dissenting relatives were mostly long gone, depriving him of his “I told you so” moment.
A.This is why you can’t crack a knuckle twice in a row.
B.Bubbles are extremely efficient at making sound, which explains the loudness.
C.Gas bubbles in finger joints make the annoying sound, but it’s unclear why some people form them and others don’t.
D.The reliable result is a deafening flood of clicks as 500 children succumb to irresistible temptation.
E.The space in between them is around a 10th of an inch wide and filled with synovial fluid, the body’s equivalent of engine oil.
F.Most joint crackers have perfectly healthy joints, although there has been a persistent myth that regular joint-cracking can cause arthritis(关节炎)
24、The safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage is considered an important part of sustainable development. Among the 629 UNESCO-listed traditions are five entries in Estonia, the most recent of which is the building and use of dugout canoes (独木舟) in the Soomaa region.
Every year, before spring, Soomaa National Park transforms into an almost drowned world, when water from melting snow in the eastern uplands floods the low-lying forests, wetlands, roads and yads of the residents who still live here. The water level rose so high that villagers could roll a dugout canoe right through their windows and into their living rooms. Everyone has had to learn to adapt to the natural annual phenomenon.
Building a dugout canoe requires a good trunk of an aspen (山杨), which grows throughout the forests of Estonia.
Once cut down, the trees are peeled and shaped like a cigar using an axe. From here, the inside of the boat is carved out to give it shape. Builders cut the frame down to a few centimetres in thickness. A long log fire is then built alongside the canoe, which is filled with several bucketfuls of water and left to warm up. Once the water has evaporated, sticks are squeezed into the frame lengthways to open it up. Aspen is a soft wood and a trunk half a metre across can be expanded into a metre-wide boat. The bot is than left to cool in the shade and is traditionally finished the following spring. Once the wood has fully dried, it’s given its final design and covered with tar (焦油;柏油).
Aivar Ruukel, one of the only five Estonians who still preserve the skill, chooses to build them as a way to connect with the history. As a young man, Ruukel attended workshops led by two master boat builders, both in their 70s at the time. He hopes that by the time he’s 70 there will be more young people doing the same. Enthusiasts hope that its joining the heritage list will safeguard the ancient practice and attract the next generation of boat masters to keep it alive.
【1】Why do villagers have to preserve dugout canoes?
A.To survive floods.
B.To go canoeing in the park.
C.To learn about a natural phenomenon.
D.To apply for intangible cultural heritage.
【2】What’s the right order of building a dugout canoe?

②The inside of the boat is carved out to give it shape.

⑤Builders remove the barks and make the trees into cigar shapes.
A.⑤③②④①
B.②⑤④①③
C.⑤②③①④
D.②③⑤④①
【3】Which statement will Ruukel probably agree with?
A.All the young people shall become boat masters.
B.The practice will die out in the next generation.
C.More people are needed to pass on the tradition.
D.One cannot master the skill without learning history.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
