  • 21、Laresce was born with a condition called hypermobility(运动过度)which meant her joints were“bend”.The condition can use severe joint pain and lead to dislocations(脱臼).

But rather than feel sorry for herself, she used her misfortune to inspire her to become   Britain's strongest schoolgirl.

Just two years ago,the condition left Laresce in so much pain that she couldn’t even take part in sports. But now she has six British and World Champion powerlifting records. It’s an incredible achievement.

Laresce’s trainer Tania George said her condition is the secret to her success.“She has more flexibility in her back than most people, which gives her the technique of bending her back strongly and safely. Most powerlifters would kill to try to bend their backs like Laresce. She has perfected the technique to lift incredibly heavy weights,”Tania said.

“I used to suffer a lot of pain from my hypermobility.I remember coming home from school with pains in my knees, joints and hips.It would stop me doing normal things at schoo1.The pain would be so much that some nights I couldn't sleep at all and I just couldn’t face going to school like that. And after each dislocation,I had to do six months of physiotherapy(理疗)to recover,”said Laresce.

However, since taking up the sport of powerlifting 18 months ago she is now effectively   cured.“really enjoyed the feeling of power I got and the excitement of people encouraging me   to do my very best,”she said.

“I’ve made lots of friends a It’s an incredible feeling when everyone's cheering me on.It’s the support of other people that makes the difference to winning.Becoming a champion was a big surprise—I just started off for fun and wasn’t expecting anything. So to win six titles over just a few months was amazing.”

  • 22、How to Graduate from College with a High GPA(Grade Point Average)

    One Hour a Day

One of the most challenging things about college is time management. It’s not that you don’t have enough. In fact you usually have too much time, and as a result time gets wasted. If you take good notes in class, and spend one hour reviewing your notes every day before going to sleep, you will make use of the power of the subconscious(下意识)to absorb information and by the time exams come around you’ll know all the material on a subconscious level, and you don’t have to sit up the night before exams.

    Select Easy Courses

The reason why selecting easy courses is powerful is that it allows you to start off your college career with an extremely high GPA. Good grades have less and less of an impact on your GPA later in your college career and raising your GPA becomes much more difficult. Selecting easy courses in the first term also leaves room for the occasional failure when coursework become more challenging.

    Join (or Form) Study Groups

If you go to a large public school where classes often have 700 plus people, study groups are an extremely effective way to ensure good grades. Study groups are often led by older students who have taken the course and received A’s in that particular course. They also often provide you with resources such as practice tests, practice problems, and many others that might not be provided by professors.

    Use Personal Development

I can honestly say I didn’t involve myself in personal development when I was in college. Looking back I realize that I suffered from low self-respect and a very unhealthy self-image. But, if I had combined personal development techniques with the three steps above, my college career would have turned out very differently.

If you have already started school, I recommend developing a strategy that applies these four ideas to your current schedule. If you haven’t started school yet, do some research on easier courses and what study groups might be available. If you follow through and commit to the four recommendations above, you’ll set yourself up for a very successful first term, and hopefully a very successful college career.

【1】According to the passage, managing your time wisely leads to __________.

    A. sitting up late before exams

    B. spending less time each day

    C. mastering what you learn in an easy way

    D. benefiting from the notes

【2Group study is meant to let the students ___________.

    A. study effectively

    B. get along well with one another

    C. practice solving problems

    D. study independently

【3The winter attached least importance to ___________ when he was at college.

    A. reviewing his lessons one hour a day

    B. selecting easier courses to learn

    C. involving a study group led by senior students

    D. applying personal development techniques

【4From the passage we can infer that _____________.

    A. every college student is to get a high GPA when graduated

    B. personal development is that most important techniques of the 4 steps

    C. the earlier you choose easy courses, the better performance you’ll have

    D. the fist school year’s success plays an important role in your college career

  • 23、It happens to all of us and can be beyond annoyance, so why do we itch? You know the feeling: There’s that spot on your arm, leg or back that just itches and begs for a deep, satisfying scratch. 【1】 No matter how much you scratch, it just can’t be satisfied.

As we all know, itchy skin is a sensation that makes us want to scratch—but as soon as you satisfy that need, you set off something called the itch-scratch cycle.【2】

The main reason that you feel itchy is that the skin cells or nerve endings near your skin have become annoyed. 【3】 When you itch, you give yourself a scratch, the area of the body that you have scratched releases chemicals including histamine, and it makes you itch more. That’s why we use antihistamines for allergic reactions but they can also help for insect bites and things like that.

【4】 The drier your skin becomes, the more likely the skin gets itchy. However, it is sometimes caused not from the skin, but from what you see or hear. When you hear someone else scratching their skin, or when you see images that suggest itch, like a picture of being bitten by a mosquito, you get the urge to scratch. People with the allergic condition seem to be more easily affected than those without the condition.【5】

    A.Causes of itchy skin.

B.It is usually caused by dry skin.

C.It means you are going to end up feeling itchier.

D.Fortunately, there are ways you can get rid of it.

E.Being aware of this phenomenon can help interrupt its effect.

F.But you know giving in to that desire will only result in more problems.

G.Once you start scratching, your body creates a chemical reaction that makes you itchier.

  • 24、   The news one day reached Gabriel that Bathsheba had left the neighborhood. Her abrupt departure is more emphatic than her verbal refusal of his offer. It may have been observed that there is no regular path for getting out of love as there is for getting in. All that Gabriel learnt of Bathsheba’s movements was done indirectly. It appeared that she had gone to a place called Weatherbury, which, whether as a visitor or permanently, he could not discover.

Gabriel had two dogs. George, the elder, had originally belonged to a shepherd (牧羊人) of inferior morals and dreadful temper. Long experience had so precisely taught the animal the difference between different orders. Though old, he was clever and trustworthy still. The young dog, George’s son, might possibly have been the image of his mother, for there was not much resemblance between him and George. He was learning the sheep-keeping business. So earnest and yet so wrongheaded was this young dog that if sent behind he did it so thoroughly that he would have chased them across the whole country with the greatest pleasure if not called off.

One night, when Gabriel had returned to his house, he called as usual to the dogs, previously shutting them up in the outhouse till next morning. Only one responded—old George; the other could not be found.   Gabriel then concluded that the young one had not finished his meal, and he went indoors to the luxury of a bed.

It was a still and wet night. Just before dawn he was woken by the abnormal reverberation of familiar music. To the shepherd, the note of the sheep-bell is beating with unusual violence and rapidity. The experienced ear of Gabriel knew the sound was caused by the running of the flock with great speed. He jumped out of bed and ascended the hill. These two hundred ewes(female sheep) seemed to have absolutely vanished from the hill. Gabriel called at the top of his voice:

    ‘Ovey, ovey, ovey!’

He called again: the valleys and furthest hills resounded but no sheep. He passed through the trees and along the ridge of the hill. He advanced: at one point the rails were broken through, and there he saw the footprints of his ewes. The dog came up, licked his hand, and made signs implying that he expected some great reward. Gabriel looked over the side of the mountain. The ewes lay dead—a pile of two hundred dead bodies.

As far as could be learnt, it appeared that the poor young dog, still under the impression that since he was kept for funning after sheep, the more he ran after them the better, had at the end of his meal off the dead lamb, which may have given him additional energy and spirits, collected all the ewes into a corner and driven the timid creatures through the hedge, breaking down a portion of the rotten railing.

Gabriel was an intensely humane man; his first feeling now was one of pity for the untimely fate of these gentle ewes and their unborn lambs. It was a second to remember another stage of the matter. All the savings had been gone at a blow; his hopes of being an independent farmer were laid low. Gabriel’s energies, patience, and industry had been so severely taxed during the years of his life, to reach his present stage of progress, that no more seemed to be left in him. He leant down upon a rail, covered his face with his hands and uttered in thankfulness:

“Thank God I am not married: what would she have done in the poverty now coming upon me!”

Gabriel found that the value of remaining lambs, plant, and implements which were really his own would be about sufficient to pay his debts, leaving himself a free man with the clothes he stood up in, and nothing more. Two months later, Gabriel was discovered at the hiring fair in Casterbridge. Though he was not hired, he earned a few pennies at the hiring fair and learned that another fair would be held at Shottsford, 10 miles beyond Weatherbury.

1How did Gabriel feel after Bathsheba’s departure?

A.He was consumed with anger. B.He quickly adapted and moved on.

C.He decided to stick to his first love. D.He was at a loss to grasp the reasons.

2What can we learn about the young dog?

A.He was more than capable of doing a shepherd dog’s duty.

B.He was slow in responding to Gabriel’s different orders.

C.He bore a striking resemblance to the old dog George.

D.He belonged to those of terrible temper and behavior.

3Where should the sentence “On the extreme summit, he saw the younger dog standing against the sky—dark and motionless.” be put in the passage?

    A. B.

    C. D.

4Two hundred ewes died mainly due to ________.

A.Gabriel’s carelessness. B.the absence of old George

C.the young dog’s wrong impression D.the unpleasant weather conditions

5Why did Gabriel utter such words in thankfulness after such a blow to him?

A.He was greatly relieved to know that no villager got hurt in the disaster.

B.He felt lucky that he could pay off his debts with the remaining things on the farm.

C.He was convinced that with patience and industry such a situation would improve.

D.He had such a considerate and sympathetic nature that he didn’t want to bother others.

6What might happen in the following paragraphs?

A.Gabriel decided to see Bathsheba on his way to Shottsford.

B.Gabriel found a good job in Casterbridge and succeeded again.

C.The young dog was abandoned for his failure or perform his duty.

D.Good neighbors gave Gabriel a hand and restored the rotten railing.

  • 26、请阅读下面文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

More than 100,000 volunteers in 132 cities spent a weekend picking up plastic and other waste across the country, in a joint worldwide effort to clean up the planet.

To celebrate the 10th World Cleanup Day on Sept 15,some 700 nonprofit NGOs (nongovernmental originations) and social groups held activities aimed at cleaning up the environment and tackling the waste crisis throughout China, mobilizing an estimated 1 millionplus people.

From snowcapped mountains to vast oceans, people united in taking action to remove waste from the environment to raise awareness of the severity of the crisis.

“Where there is a will, every day can be and should be ‘Cleanup Day’, says Ma Yongjian, a volunteer from Beijing who recently did “plogging”—jogging while picking up trash—with his friends in Yudong Park in the northwest of the city.

“We must change the way of living we are used to, to reduce waste from its source,” says Joe Harvey, a British national and promoter of “zero waste” lifestyles in China. He and his girlfriend Carrie Yu created The Bulk House, a brand that provides zerowaste solutions for daily living. They are urging people to reduce or eliminate the use of plastic and singleuse disposables, such as plastic utensils, bags and beverage bottles.

Sounding a note of caution, Mao Da, a specialist in environmental history at Beijing Normal University, says: “In recent years, the massive consumption and materialistic craze have worsened the waste situation as trash has been produced at a faster pace and in greater quantities.”
