21、Who’s in control of your life? Who is pulling your string? For the majority of us, it’s other people—society, colleagues, friends, family or our religious community. We learned this way of operating when we were very young, of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us. As Oscar Wilde puts it, “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry(模仿), their passions a quotation.”
So when people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling like a drug. Therefore, we are so eager for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to. Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting their fix (一剂毒品). We worsen our own existence to get our own constant fix of approval.
But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom—the freedom to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think. People have their own agenda, and they come with their own baggage and, in the end, they're more interested in themselves than in you. Furthermore, if we try to live by the opinions of others, we will build our life on sinking sand. Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting exhausted and probably pleasing no one in the process.
So how can we take back control? I think there’s only one way—make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values---not values imposed(强加)from the outside by others, but innate values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others, we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life.
【1】What Oscar Wilde says implies that _____________.
A. most people’s thoughts are controlled by others
B. most people have a variety of thoughts
C. we have thoughts similar to those of others
D. other people’s thoughts are more important
【2】What does the author try to argue in the third paragraph ?
A. We need to pay for what we want to get.
B. Changing opinions may cost us our freedom.
C. We may lose ourselves to please others.
D. The price of taking drugs is freedom.
【3】In order to live a happy, effective and purposeful life, we should _________.
A. care about others’ opinions and change opinions all the time
B. guide ourselves by means of values from the outside
C. stick to our own values
D. persuade others to accept our opinions
【4】It can be concluded from the passage that __________.
A. it’s important to accept others’ opinions
B. it’s better to do what we like
C. we shouldn't change our own opinions

Every Little Bit Counts?
One of the weapons in the fight against poverty is microcredit also called microlending). Microcredit is the practice of giving very small, short-term loans to poor people.【1】 The loans help the borrowers start or upgrade small businesses. Microcredit organizations assume that poor people can lift themselves out of poverty if they only have access to standard financial services.
Grameen Bank, started as a project in 1976, is a pioneer of microcredit.【2】 Borrowers often have no steady job no other property, and no one to co-sign on the loan - common requirements for getting a loan elsewhere. Grameen Bank promotes credit as a human right, and with a 98% repayment rate, it seems to have helped its borrowers improve their lives and made a profit through interest in the meantime.
Successes like Grameen Bank and others caused governments and NGOs to rush to fund microcredit operations. How wonderful to imagine that the cure for poverty could be profitable! However, recent studies question how effective microcredit really is. Critics say that poor people with enoughentrepreneurial(创业的) drive to get a loan would have succeeded anyway. Those without the drive don't end up in better circumstances after paying back loans, which aren’t always used for businesses. 【3】 And though microcredit is described as a way to empower women, some say the loans aren’t causing any measurable improvement in women’s lives.
The ideas behind microcredit are uplifting: that all humans are filled with potentials and that one small bit of assistance can help a whole family live better. 【4】 Time and close study will tell if microcredit is really the miracle it appears to be.
A.They also say that without a basic education, poor borrowers aren't equipped to manage the businesses they create.
B.In general, the loans are 100 USD or less, usually paid back within six months.
C.Borrowers need to provide the credit history, which the lenders will use as the criteria when evaluating a loan.
D.They may, however, ignore systematic causes of large-scale poverty.
E.Most microcredit agencies are struggling as the vast majority of loans are not paid back.
F.It has given out more than eight billion dollars in loans to people who could never borrow money otherwise.
23、The best way to explore a new world is to land on it. But there are a few places in the solar system that we will never understand. One of them is Jupiter.
Jupiter is mostly made of hydrogen and helium gas(氦气). 【1】 There’s no outer crust(地壳)to break your fall on Jupiter. The big question is: Could you fall through one end of Jupiter and out the other? It turns out that you wouldn’t even make it halfway.
【2】 So make sure you bring plenty with you to breathe. The next problem is the high temperatures. So you also need an air conditioner. Now, you’re ready for the journey.
As you enter the top of the atmosphere, you’ll be traveling at 110,000 mph under the pull of Jupiter’s gravity. But brace(顶住)yourself. You’ll quickly hit the denser atmosphere below, which will hit you like a wall. It won’t be enough to stop you, though. After about 3 minutes, you’ll reach the cloud tops 155 miles down. 【3】 Jupiter rotates(旋转)very fast, which creates powerful winds. About 75 miles below the clouds, you reach the limit of human exploration.
However, let’s say you could find a way to go even farther. You will uncover some of Jupiter’s grandest mysteries. But, sadly, you’ll have no way to tell anyone. 【4】
At 13,000 miles down, you reach Jupiter’s inner layer. Here you’ll be left free-floating in mid-Jupiter, unable to move up or down. 【5】 You might survive down here if you’re in a spacecraft. We may never see what’s beneath those majestic clouds, but we can still admire this mysterious planet from afar.
A.You will have no way to escape.
B.So trying to land on Jupiter is a bad idea.
C.Can we send the spacecraft to land on Jupiter?
D.The first thing is that Jupiter’s atmosphere has no oxygen
E.Here, you’ll experience the full impact of Jupiter’s rotation.
F.So, trying to land on it would be like to land on a cloud on Earth.
G.Jupiter’s deep atmosphere absorbs radio waves, so you’ll be shut off from the outside world.

25、Everyone in business has been told that success is all about attracting and retaining (留住) customers. It sounds simple and achievable. But, , words of wisdom are soon forgotten. Once companies have attracted customers they often the second half of the story. In the excitement of beating off the competition, negotiating prices, securing orders, and delivering the product, managers tend to become carried away. They forget what they regard as the boring side of business— that the customer remains a customer.
to concentrate on retaining as well as attracting customers costs business huge amounts of money annually. It has been estimated that the average company loses between 10 and 30 per cent of its customers every years. In constantly changing , this is not surprising. What is surprising is the fact that few companies have any idea how many customers they have lost.
Only now are organizations beginning to wake up to those lost opportunities and calculate the implications. Cutting down the number of customers a company loses can make a big in its performance. Research in the US found that a five per cent decrease in the number of defecting (流失的) customers led to increases of between 25 and 85 per cent.
In the US, Domino’s Pizza estimates that a regular customer is worth more than $5,000 over ten years. A customer who receives a poor quality product or service on their first visit and never returns, is losing the company thousands of dollars in profits (more if you consider how many people they are likely to tell about their bad experience).
The logic behind cultivating customer is impossible to deny. “In practice most companies’ marketing effort is focused on getting customers, with little attention paid to them”, says Adrian Payne of Cornfield University’ School of Management. “Research suggests that there is a close relationship between retaining customers and making profits. customers tend to buy more, are predictable and usually cost less to service than new customers. Furthermore, they tend to be less price , and may provide free word-of-mouth advertising. Retaining customers also makes it for competitors to enter a market or increase their share of a market.
