二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Entering adulthood is an important step in everyone's life. It means that a young person must soon leave childishness behind and start to shoulder grown-up responsibilities.

In Germany, “Jugendfeier” is a coming-of-age ceremony for 14-year-olds. They go to school to prepare for the occasion, studying topics, such as cultural respect and social responsibility, which will help them become worthy citizens. The hope is that the young people taking part in the ceremony will take on these values for themselves.

In Latin America, “quinceanera” is a celebration for girls on their 15th birthday, marking a girl’s entry into womanhood. In the past, “quinceanera” was intended to ready girls for marriage and they were taught cooking, sewing, and other household skills in preparation. Today, it's similar to how one's 18th birthday is considered an important day in other cultures.

In India, the sacred thread ceremony is performed when a boy is grown-up. He is given three sacred threads representing three promises he makes: to respect knowledge, to respect his parents and to respect society. After the ceremony, the child, traditionally, leaves his family to live with a Guru(teacher). At this point the boy becomes "twice-born"---first his physical birth, and second his intellectual birth through a teacher's care.

In Vanuatu, young boys come of age by jumping off a 98-foot-tall tower with a bungee-like rope tied to their ankles, just barely preventing them from hitting the ground. At the ceremony, the diver's mother will hold something representing his childhood, and after the jump the item will be thrown away, representing the end of childhood. He is now a man, ready to protect the family

【1】What is the shared expectation of the four coming-of-age ceremonies?

    A.Having respect for knowledge

B.Getting ready to raise a family

    C.Acquiring cross-cultural awareness

    D.Developing a sense of responsibility

【2】Which app might appeal to people entering adulthood in Germany?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

【3】In which place are things with special meanings given to the young attendants?

    A.Germany.

    B.Latin America

    C.India

    D.Vanuatu.

  • 22、If you look at the night sky, you’ll often see stars moving very quickly. In fact, they move much more quickly than they should according to their size and the laws of physics.

Scientists do not completely understand why the speed of these stars is so high. But many believe the reason is that much of the universe is made of something called “dark matter”. Groups of stars called galaxies, such as the Milky Way, might even be made up of 90 percent dark matter.

How much something weighs depends on where it is. The same object weighs only half as much on Mars as it does on Earth and almost three times as much on Jupiter. So scientists prefer to talk about the mass (质量) of something rather than how much it weighs, because mass does not change. They can work out the mass of galaxies by measuring the distance between them and the speed they move at.

Recently, Jorge Peñarrubia, a senior academic at Edinburgh University, UK, and his team discovered something interesting: The mass of the Milky Way is only half as much as the mass of another nearby galaxy, Andromeda. This seems strange, and dark matter may explain why.

Finding out more about dark matter could help us understand how the universe began, but this is not easy. Lots of scientists with different types of expert knowledge are working on the problem.

We can’t see dark matter, it’s very difficult to measure and we can’t find out its mass. Unlike stars, dark matter doesn’t produce or reflect light. But we can make a good guess that it is there because of the way things move and the way light bends. Experts now think dark matter may be very different from the matter that we find on Earth. There may also be five times as much dark matter in the universe as ordinary matter.

【1】Something that weighs 15kg on Earth weighs about ________ on Mars and ________ on Jupiter.

    A. 7.5 kg, 45 kg B. 30 kg, 45 kg  C. 45 kg, 7.5 kg  D. 5 kg, 30 kg

【2】The author mentions the masses of the Milky Way and Andromeda mainly to ________.

    A. explain why the same object has a different weight on different stars

    B. compare the distance between the Milky Way and Andromeda

    C. show that studying dark matter could help to answer some scientific questions

    D. support the idea that scientists prefer to talk about mass instead of weight

【3】Dark matter is difficult to investigate because ________.

    A. it travels at a very fast speed

    B. we can’t see where it is or measure its mass

    C. it’s hard to measure the light it produces and reflects

    D. it is much bigger than ordinary matter in size

【4】According to the text, dark matter ________.

    A. could accelerate the speed of stars

    B. could lessen the mass of objects in galaxies

    C. makes up the entire universe and its stars

    D. may help us identify the origins of the universe

  • 23、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

In my first week as a graduate student at Cambridge University in 1964 I met with a fellow student, two years ahead of me in his studies; he was unsteady on his feet and spoke with great difficulty. This was Stephen Hawking.I learned that he had a bad disease and might not live long enough even to finish his PhD degree.

But, amazingly, he has reached the age of 73.Even mere survival would have been a medical miracle, but of course, he didn’t merely survive. He has become arguably the most famous scientist in the world for his brilliant research, for his bestselling books, and, above all, for his astonishing victory over hardship.

Stephen received his “death sentence” in 1964, when I thought it was hard for him to go on with his study.Stephen went from Albans School to Oxford University. He was said to be a “lazy” undergraduate, but his brilliance earned him a first class degree, an “entry ticket” to a research career in Cambridge and a uniquely inspiring achievement.Within a few years of the burst of his disease he was wheelchair bound, and his speech was so unclear that it could only be understood by those who knew him well. But his scientific career went from strength to strength: he quickly came up with a series of insights into the nature of black holes (then a very new idea) and how the universe began. In 1974 he was elected to the Royal Society at the exceptionally early age of 32.

The great advances in science generally involve discovering a link between phenomena that were previously conceptually unconnected for instance, Isaac Newton realized that the force making an apple fall to earth was the same as the force that holds the moon and planets in their orbits.Stephen’s revolutionary idea about a link between gravity and quantum(量子) theory has still not been testedHowever, it has been hugely influential; indeed, one of the main achievements of string theory(弦理论) has been to confirm and build on his ideaHe has undoubtedly done more than anyone else since Einstein to improve our knowledge of gravity and he is one of the top ten living theoretical physicists.

【1】What impressed the author most about Stephen Hawking?

    A. His brilliant research.

    B. His bestselling books.

    C. His serious disease.

    D. His defeating hardship.

【2】What made Stephen Hawking start his research career at Cambridge?

    A. His death sentence.

    B. His “lazy” attitude.

    C. His above   average talent and ability.

    D. His rich experience.

【3】It can be inferred that Stephen Hawking was born ________.

    A. in the early 1940s

    B. in the late 1940s

    C. in the early 1930s

    D. in the late 1930s

【4】What can we learn from the text?

    A. Hawking’s theory was proved years ago.

    B. Hawking was not as successful as Newton.

    C. String theory built on Hawking’s ideA.

    D. Hawking’s theory has had little influence on others.

【5】Which of the following is Not True according the passage?

    A. He achieved one success after another in his career despite his disease.

    B. He couldn’t walk when the author first met him at Cambridge.

    C. He not only survived his disease but contributed greatly to science.

    D. He is among the greatest scientists to improve the knowledge of gravity.

  • 24、Consumer electronics once again topped the list of the most wanted gifts this holiday season. “Seventy-six percent of consumers who plan to buy holiday gifts say that they will spend money buying at least one technology product; definitely a solid vote of confidence for technology.” Steve Koenig is with the Consumer Electronics Association. He says the group’s latest research also shows that Americans this year are spending more on technology products.

“Here in 2012, $252 on average–the technology spend for consumers this year.” From tablet computers to smart phones, American shoppers have been lining up to get the newest and coolest electronic devices on the market. There are more choices today than ever before. “It’s kind of hard to make a decision.”

Tablet computers are one of the best-selling products this year. Brian Tong is Senior Editor of CNET.com. The website reports on tech news and examines the latest electronic products. He says the Apple iPad Mini is one of the most popular tablets. Its starting price is $329. One of Apple’s biggest competitors is the Google Nexus 7. It starts at $199.

“The hardware inside is more powerful than what’s in the iPad Mini, but also it offers you a lot of things like maps that work better than Apple’s maps.” Brian Tong says there is one reason why people may like the iPad Mini more than the Nexus 7. “If you just want to read books and surf the Internet, you don’t really need to get an iPad Mini, but if you want the largest group of apps that’s where the iPad and Apple’s ecosystem shines the most.”

Elman Chacon is with the electronics store Best Buy. He says another hot product this season is smart cameras. They connect to the Internet through Wi-Fi. This makes it easy for users to email or upload photographs directly from the camera. “You can literally take a picture, upload it into your Facebook in a matter of seconds. These things are pretty cool because they do a lot of things.”

Streaming media boxes also connect to the Internet. People are able to watch web content such as movies and YouTube videos on their televisions. Another popular item is wireless speaker systems. The newest ones work with any device that has Bluetooth technology, including smart phones, laptops and tablets.

With the growing popularity of Internet shopping, many consumers will visit a store first to look at a product, and then go online to find it at a lower price. Stores like Best Buy understand that and they want to stay competitive.

“We have something called the perfect match promise which means if you buy a certain device and you find it cheaper within 30 days we’ll go ahead and price match that for you.” Elman Chacon said.

    【1According to Brain Tong, ________.

    A. the Apple’s iPad Mini is more suitable for enthusiastic readers

    B. the hardware in iPad Mini is more advanced than that in Nexus 7

    C. iPad Mini is more eco-friendly

    D. Nexus 7 has fewer apps than iPad Mini

【2If you’ve discovered that a certain device you bought at Best Buy is more expensive than one at another store, ________.

    A. you are sure to get double the amount you paid

    B. the store will return the price differences

    C. you can return the device and get your money back

    D. the store will lower the price within 30 days

【3Which of the following would be the best gift for a cab driver?

    A. Smart cameras.   B. Streaming media boxes.

    C. Tablet computers. D.Wireless speaker systems.

【4What is true about the smart cameras ?

    A. To show the varieties of products

    B. The smart cameras are more powerful.

C.It can make the users upload their photographs easily .

    D. The smart cameras makes it more convenient to go on Internet .

One warm, sunny morning, Marsha jumped right out of bed.

Today was the first day of summer vacation and also the last day she’d be spending with Tanya, her very best friend. Tanya was going to camp in another state. She’d be gone all summer. Marsha and Tanya always spent their summers together. This one would be no fun without her!

Marsha’s mom came in.“What’s the matter, Rabbit?” she said.

“I miss Tanya already. Isn’t that silly?” Marsha said.

“No,”her mother said softly.“Missing a best friend isn’t silly at all. ” Marsha’s eyes were wet.

“I know how you feel.”“You do?”asked Marsha. Marsha’s mom nodded.“I had a best friend when I was your age. And she went away to camp, too.”“I felt pretty sad,” Marsha’s mom said. “I wanted my best friend to think about me. So I gave her something.”“What?”asked Marsha.“I gave her my best necklace,” her mom said.

“You did?”asked Marsha.“Well,I wanted her to have it,” Marsha’s mom said,“Maybe you could give Tanya one of your favorite things to take to camp. How about a doll? Then she will never forget that you are her best friend.”Marsha wiped her eyes.“Mom, that’s a great idea!” she said.

“Are you going to give Tanya your Glenda Glitter doll?” said Marsha’s mom.“Yes, Mom,”she said.“This is the one I want her to have. But now I’m going to get Glenda all nice and clean. ” Soon, Glenda Glitter looked just like new.

Next it was time to dress the doll. Marsha ran to her room. In a flash she was back. Her hands were full of doll’s dresses. “This is the one I like best,” she said.“And I know Tanya likes it best, too.”
