  • 21、Napping(小睡) may be part of life for most of us. However, some countries where daytime naps have long been part of the culture, such as Spain, now discourage the habit. Meanwhile, some companies in the US now promote napping as a way to boost productivity. “It’s important to try to reveal the biological pathways that contribute to the reason why we nap,” says Dashti from Harvard Medical School.

Previously, co-senior author Richa Sexena at Massachusetts General Hospital(MGH) and his colleagues used many databases of genetic and lifestyle information to study other aspects of sleep. To gain a better understanding of the genetics of napping, they performed a genome(基因组)-wide association study (GWAS), which involves rapid scanning of complete sets of DNA of a large number of people.

For this study, the researchers used data from the UK Biobank, which includes genetic information from 452,633 people. All the participants were asked to classify their naps during the day as “never/ rarely”, “sometimes” or “usually”. The GWAS identified 123 regions in the human genome connected with daytime napping. Then the participants wore activity monitors called accelerometers, which can provide data about daytime napping. This data also showed that the self-reports about napping were accurate.

Several other features of this study bolster(巩固) its results. For example, the researchers obtained similar findings in an analysis of the genomes of 541,333 people collected by 23andMe, a consumer genetic-testing company. Also, a significant number of the genes near or at regions identified by the GWAS are already known to play a role in sleep.

The team also identified at least three potential mechanisms(机制) that promote napping. Some people need more shut-eye than others. A daytime nap can help make up for poor-quality sleep the night before. People who rise early may “catch up” on sleep with a nap. “This tells us that daytime napping is biologically driven and not just an environmental or behavioral choice,” says Dashti. Some of these mechanisms are linked to health concerns, such as a large waistline and increased blood pressure, though more research on those associations is needed.

【1】What did the researchers at MGH focus on in their new study?

A.The causes of long napping time.

    B.The benefits of napping frequently.

C.The genes contributing to poor sleeping quality.

D.The reasons behind the napping habit.

【2】Why did the researchers use the activity monitors?

A.To study the database more efficiently.

B.To find the cause of genetic variation.

C.To guarantee the accuracy of the self-reports.

D.To explore how the participants feel after the naps.

【3】What can we know from the text?

A.American companies encourage napping to make people feel at ease.

B.The subjects of the GWAS come from 123 regions.

C.It is easier to have a nap by shutting eyes.

D.Napping has something to do with one’s biological factors.

【4】According to Dashti, what will the researchers study next?

A.The ways to help people sleep better.

B.The connection between some health problems and the three mechanisms.

C.The impact of environment on people’s napping choice.

D.The causes of and solutions to some health concerns.

  • 22、   Scientists at the University of Oxford have developed new artificial intelligence(AI) software to recognize and follow up the faces of chimpanzees(黑猩猩)in the wild. The new software will allow researchers and wildlife conservationists to significantly cut back on time spent analyzing videos, according to the new paper published in Science Advances.

For species(物种)like chimpanzees, which have complex social lives and live for many yearsgetting photos of their behavior taken from short-term field research can only tell us so much” says Dan Schofield researcher and DPhil student at Oxford University’s Private Models Lab, School of Anthropology. “By taking advantage of the power of machine learning to unlock large video files , it makes it possible to measure behavior over the long term. ’’

The computer model was trained using over 10 million images(影像):from Kyoto University s Primate Research Institute(PRI) video files of wild chimpanzees in Guinea,West Africa. The new software is the first to continuously track and recognize individual a wide range of poses, performing with high accuracy in difficult conditions such as low lighting and poor image quality.

“Access to this large video file has allowed us to use deep neural networks to train models to a degree that was previously not possible,” says Arsha Nagrad, co-auther of the study and DPhil student at the Department of Engineer Science ,University of Oxford .” Additionally, our new software differs from previous primate face recognition software in that it can be applied to videos with limited manual intervention(人工干预)saving hours of time. ”

The technology can be potentially used to monitor species for conservation Although the present application focuses on chimpanzees, the AI software provided will be applied to other species, and help drive the adoption of AI systems to solve(解决)a range of problems in the wildlife sciences.

1What is the purpose of developing the new soft?

A.To save wildlife researchers’ time spent in the labs.

B.To keep track of wildlife conservationists' behaviors.

C.To protect chimpanzees and help them to live longer .

D.To recognize and track the faces of wild chimpanzees.

2What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Getting photos. B.Analyzing videos.

C.A powerful machine D.The new AI software.

3What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

A.The working principle of the new software. B.Some limitations of using the new software.

C.The unique advantages of the new software. D.Controversial attitudes to the new software.

4What can be known from the last paragraph?

A.Technology advance is the final goal of science

B.The new software won’t just be applied to chimpanzees.

C.AI systems are widely used in the wildlife sciences.

D.The application of the new technology isn’t easy.

  • 23、Here is an astonishing and significant fact:Mental work alone can’t make us tire. It  sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue(疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all!

If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins (霉素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.

So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or  even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?

Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional (情绪的)attitudes. One of England’s most outstanding scientists, J. A. Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare. ”Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further, He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”

What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated— those are the emotions t hat tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.

1What surprised the scientists a few years ago?

    A. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer’s blood

    B. Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn after a day’s work

    C. The brain could work for many hours without fatigue

    D. A mental worker’s blood was filled with fatigue toxins

2According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?

    A. Challenging mental work   B. Unpleasant emotions

    C. Endless tasks   D. Physical labor

3What’s the author’s attitude towards the scientists’ idea?

    A. He agrees with them   B. He doubts them

    C. He argues against them   D. He hesitates to accept them

  • 24、I’ve cheated in school when I thought that I could get away with it. I’m not proud of it and I don’t usually feel very good about myself afterwards, but sometimes it’s the only way possible to survive in a pressure cooker. My parents are really set on my getting good grades. They study my report card the same way they examine the newspaper’s stock market page. And they make me feel that I’ve got to live up to their expectations.

But often it’s like each teacher acts as if his is the only subject we have. They think nothing of piling on our homework or giving surprise quizzes. Sometimes we have to take two or three tests in different subjects on the same day. I’d like to see a lot of adults I know preparing for that.

When the pressure becomes too high, some kids may resort to (诉诸于) cheating. If you have three or four subjects to study for, you’re not going to be able to devote enough time to each subject in order to be well prepared for each class. Besides, it may be the only way left to live up to your parents’ expectations and compete with the top students in the class.

Everybody knows that if you cheat, it’s important not to get caught. Few things can cause more of chaos. Once, my elder brother got caught cheating on a math final. My parents acted as though he’d committed a federal crime. The assistant principal called them to school, but although the incident caused several conferences, I don’t think that anybody ever really understood what my brother was going through. We’re just supposed to perform outstandingly as well as always act honestly, but how many adults can actually live up to the standards they set for us?

My father has gotten countless traffic tickets for parking in no parking zones or for not coming to a full stop at stop signs. And you’ve always hearing about people who don’t file their incomes tax honestly. How about all the corruption in government? Successful adults often accept dishonesty in order to achieve their business goals. Are kids the only ones who are supposed to be perfect?

Most of my friends have cheated on tests in school at one time or another. The kids who never cheated are usually either afraid of getting caught or just don’t know how to do it safely. Nobody wants to cheat. But if it’s a choice of being honest or of getting a better grade, most kids will try for the latter. That may sound wrong, but we didn’t make the rules, we’re just trying to get by.

【1】What is the best title of this passage?

    A. Everyone can fight a cheat!

    B. Everyone likes to cheat!

    C. Cheating is reasonable!

    D. No one wants to cheat!

【2】 The author owes children’s cheat to the following EXPECT __________.

    A. parents   B. children   C. teacher   D. examinations

【3】 In the fifth paragraph, the author mainly wants to say ____________.

    A. some adults can not live up to the standards they set for the children

    B. kids are always supposed to be perfect

    C. his father always cheats in his life

    D. children shouldn’t learn from successful adults

【4】Which of the following is true according to this passage?

    A. The author thinks it is children’s right to cheat in school.

    B. Most of the author’s friends like cheating on the tests in school.

    C. The author thinks it wrong to cheat in school.

    D. The author shows a positive attitude towards a surprise quiz in school.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

How Setting a Schedule Can Make You Less Productive

It can seem like there’s never enough time - not enough for sleep and not enough for play, and not enough for exercise.

There’s a relatively new term to describe this feeling: time famine, or the sensation of having too much to do without enough time to do it.

To structure what little time we feel we have, one strategy is scheduling. The idea is that scheduling will make us more efficient. But scheduling can sometimes backfire and actually make us less productive. In one study, attendees of an academic conference were asked whether they would go to the presidential address taking place about an hour later. Some said they would, and others said they wouldn’t. Those who planned to attend the address reported the hour leading up to it felt shorter. So the presence of an upcoming activity seems to have shrunk how much time people felt they had.

Why might this happen? It’s believed that when there’s an appointment coming, we direct our attention to it, whether it’s mentally preparing for it or simply dreading it. This makes the future appointment feel more substantial (重大的); as a result, the time interval leading up to the scheduled activity feels limited and insufficient. Time famine may partly lies in our own perception of what we feel can be done with the time we have.

But you still have the same amount of time leading up to a scheduled event, so time famine shouldn’t really matter, right? But it does. This feeling by itself can influence what people decide to do. When something is scarce, people consider it more valuable and are less willing to part with it. The same is true for time. If time feels limited, people are less likely to use it - even when it’s in their best interest.

If you love scheduling and planning out your days, a trick could be to schedule events or tasks back-to-back (连续地), which leaves you with larger amounts of unscheduled time. Several uninterrupted hours of unscheduled time will feel longer, especially if there’s nothing scheduled coming.
