二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、How many times a day do you check your email? When you wake up? Before bed? A dozen times in between? The technology that was supposed to simplify our lives has become the vital time-suck: the average teen spends more than seven hours a day using technological devices, plus an additional hour just text-messaging friends.

The advantage of technological devices is connectedness: email lets us respond on the go, and we are in touch with more people during more hours of the day than at any other time in history. But is it possible we’re more lonely than ever, too? That’s what MIT professor Sherry Turkle observes in her new book, Alone Together, a fascinating portrait of our changing relationship with technology. Turkle details the ways technology has redefined our comprehension of closeness and loneliness—and warns us of the danger of accepting such virtual(虚拟的) relationships in place of lasting emotional connections.

For Turkle, the biggest worry is the effect all these shallow connections have on our development. Is technology offering us the lives we want to live? “We’re texting people at a distance,” says Turkle, “We’re using lifeless objects to convince ourselves that even when we’re alone, we feel together. And then when we’re with each other, we put ourselves in situations where we are alone—constantly on our mobile devices. It’s what I call a perfect storm of confusion about what’s important in our human connections.”

What can’t be denied is that technology, whatever its faults, makes life a whole lot easier. It allows us to communicate with more people in less time and makes conversation simple. But it can also be seductive(具有诱惑性的), providing more stimulation than our natural lives. There are usually some unhealthy videos online which remove teenagers’ attention from their schoolwork. Besides, some online activities make people addicted, which occupied their daily life and affected their ability to form real-world relationships.“Technology can be more immediately satisfying than the labor of building an intimate relationship,” said one highschool student, “Every time I text, I start to have some happy feelings.”

But are any of those feelings equal to the kind we feel when engaged in real, face-to-face communication? Online, you can neglect others’ feelings. In a text message, you can avoid eye contact. A number of studies have found that this generation of teens is less sympathetic than ever. That doesn’t spell disaster, says Turkle—but

1From the first paragraph we can infer that_________.

    A. email checking helps people wake up early

    B. technological device production has been simplified

    C. using technological devices costs teens much time

    D. people communicate mainly by text-messaging now

    2Turkle’s new book mainly discussed________.

    A. ways to draw a fascinating portrait

    B. how technology influences human relationships

    C. the dangers of accepting emotional connections

    D. the advantages of technology

3What worries Turkle most is that more and more people are_________.

    A. starting to accept emotional connections in place of virtual connections

    B. convincing themselves by using fewer lifeless objects in connections

    C. dropping the use of technological devices for connection with each other

    D. being affected by the shallow connections through the mobile devices

4Which of the following is True according to the passage?

    A. Others’ feelings can be ignored in online communication.

    B. No stimulation is provided in natural life connections.

    C. People always send text messages to avoid eye contact.

    D. It may be a disaster that teens are less sympathetic than ever.

5What is the main purpose of the passage?

    A. To instruct people how to do with emails.

    B. To stress the importance of technology.

    C. To promote a wider use of technological devices.

    D. To lead us to consider what’s important in human connections.

  • 22、It is often difficult for farmers to identify diseases quickly enough to protect their crops and those on neighboring farms. Now, some farmers are using a simple device directly in the field to find viruses before they spread.

In Tanzania, several viruses are a threat to cassava crops. Farmers struggle to identify the diseases in an urgent effort to avoid severe crop damage. The disease identification process is often difficult when farmers are acting on their own. If they do not know what is attacking their crops, they cannot decide the best way to fight the disease. A device from British technology company Oxford Nanopore is changing that. The device extracts deoxyribonucleic acid, better known as DNA, from plants. DNA is the carrier of genetic information in nearly all living things. The device helps farmers identify what is harming their crops so they can change to more resistant crops.

Laura Boykin is with the University of Western Australia and also works with the Cassava Virus Action Project. She brought the device to a Tanzanian farm owned by Asha Mohamed. She said, "We are here collecting leaf punches from infected material to test, to do a DNA extraction and then start sequencing(排序)in the field." The testing identified a number of viruses in the cassava fields near Mohamed's farm. The process also discovered that plants considered resistant to disease had a very low viral level. Once the viruses were identified, Asha Mohamed was given two kinds of seeds that are resistant to the diseases.

In another case, DNA was collected from a pawpaw tree farm in Kenya. With that test, the technology was able to identify diseases affecting Naomi Mumo's crops. Naomi Mumo said,"All my pawpaw were affected by a disease, and I didn't know what kind of disease it was. But now, I have people who have identified the disease using new technology, and within a very short time. So I'm very happy."

The speed at which farmers identify diseases can mean the difference between the success or failure on large areas of crop land. Now, the use of such simple and easily transportable DNA sequencing devices is making that possible.

【1】What’s the main idea of the whole passage?

A.Farmers In Tanzania struggle to identify the diseases in their crops.

B.How Laura Boykin helped Asha Mohamed to identify the viruses.

C.DNA sequencing device helps farmers to find viruses and identify the diseases in their crops quickly.

D.A DNA sequencing device helps farmers to keep healthy.

A.Farmers often have difficulty in identifying diseases in their crops quickly by themselves.

B.DNA carries genetic information in nearly all living things.

C.Both Asha Mohamed and Naomi Mumo are farmers in Tanzania.

D.If farmers can identify diseases in their crops quickly, they can protect their crops and succeed on large areas of crop land.

  • 23、Eating at a slow speed may help reduce hunger, the U.S. researchers said on Monday. Previous research suggests that the ability to control energy intake may be affected by the speed at which we eat, and a high eating rate may damage the relationship between the sensory signals and processes that control how much we eat.

In order to learn more about the link between eating speed and energy intake, researchers examined how eating speed affects calories consumed during a meal in both normal-weight subjects as well as overweight or obese subjects.

In the new study, a group of normal-weight subjects and a group of overweight or obese subjects were asked to consume two meals in a controlled environment. All subjects ate one meal slowly, took small bites, chewed thoroughly, and paused and put the spoon down between bites, and ate a second meal quickly, took large bites, chewed quickly, and did not pause and put the spoon down.

At the conclusion of the study, the researchers found only normal-weight subjects had a statistically significant reduction in caloric consumption by eating slowly. A lack of statistical significance in the overweight and obese group may be partly due to the fact that they consumed less food during both eating conditions compared to the normal-weight subjects, Professor Meena Shah said, it is possible that the overweight and obese subjects felt more self-conscious, and thus ate less during the study.

Despite the differences in caloric consumption between the normal-weight and overweight and obese subjects, the study found some similarities. Both groups felt less hungry later on after the slow meal than after the fast meal, which indicates that greater hunger suppression(抑制)among both groups could be expected from a meal consumed more slowly. Also, both the normal-weight and overweight or obese groups consumed more water during the slow meal. The higher water intake during the slow eating condition may have affected food consumption, said Shah. According to Shah, slowing the speed of eating may help suppress hunger levels and may even improve the enjoyment of a meal.

The findings were published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

【1】What does the previous study have in common with the new one?

    A. There is a link between eating speed and energy intake.

    B. Eating at a slow speed may help feel hungry.

    C. Eating too fast may damage your stomach.

    D. Eating rate may affect processes controlling how much we eat.

【2】What should the subjects do during the research?

    A. Both groups could totally eat the meals at any speed as they liked.

    B. Both groups had to consume one meal in controlled eating conditions.

    C. Both groups were asked to eat one meal slowly while the other quickly.

    D. One group should eat slowly while the other one quickly.

【3】What caused the lack of statistically significant reduction in the overweight and obese group?

    A. They were told not to eat a lot.

    B. In the study they had no appetite to eat.

    C. They lost consciousness in the study.

    D. They ate less food on purpose.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

    A. New research findings about how to control eating rate.

    B. A study about the link between eating speed and energy intake.

    C. One may feel less hungry later on after the slow meal than after the fast meal.

    D. Water intake may have affected food consumption.

    Overcoming Adversity

On the bus headed to the United States from Mexico, I experienced the saddest and longest ride I ever had. The thoughts of me not seeing my friends and family again were taking over my mind and causing a strong sense of depression. As I headed to a place I didn’t want to call home, minutes felt like hours and the hours felt like days.

“Welcome to the United States,” the driver said at the immigration checkpoint. The Officers repeatedly asked me for my passport, but I didn’t understand a single word coming out of their mouth. After we sorted out all the confusion we were on our way. With 3 hours left, a new thought took over my mind: stupidity. Not being able to understand a new language was the cause of my feeling. This filled me with a burning rage that I had never felt before.

Not understanding the new language I was introduced to was always a problem that I struggled with alone. In school, I felt like the problems were growing rapidly and I was losing control. The transition from being a straight-A student in Mexico to being a straight F student in the United States wasn’t easy and left me wondering if I could ever belong here. I was always known as the weird(怪的)Mexican in the classroom. Making friends was always hard because no one wanted to hang out with the weirdo(怪人)in the class.

I told myself that if I wanted to overcome my problem I had to practice it more. When it came to group assignments, I thought that it was the perfect moment to carry out my plan to hold a conversation with someone else. The moment arrived, I was nervous that it was my time to speak in the group. With a stutter(结巴), my first words came out of my mouth. “Hey my name is Jesus,” I said with a strong Mexican accent. Everyone in the group burst out laughing and the cause of their joy was my strong Mexican accent. This made me want to crawl up into a little ball and start crying in front of everyone.
