26、Designing playgrounds is a tough job. First, they have to be fun. But they also have to be safe, affordable, and accessible. Kids with disabilities can use and enjoy accessible playgrounds. Some people can’t get around without the help of a wheelchair or walker. Others have trouble climbing, jumping, or balancing. How do you design a playground for people with such different disabilities?
One way is to provide accessible equipment. Think about swings. They’re a popular piece of playground equipment. But most swings are just a thick flat piece of rubber to sit on and two chains to hang onto. Kids who have trouble controlling their muscles may fall off and get hurt. How would you solve this problem?
It’s not just equipment that can cause problems for kids with disabilities. Even the surface of a playground is important. The ground under many playgrounds isn’t smooth. It’s covered with loose wood or rubber chips. This makes the ground softer in case someone falls, but the loose material is hard for some people to cross — especially people in wheelchairs. Some playgrounds solve this problem with smooth, rubber surfaces. These are great for everyone.
It takes creative thinking to come up with designs that work for everyone. Take a sandbox for example, is it low to the ground? Most sandboxes are. These are fun for kids who can easily sit or kneel on the ground. But what about kids who can’t?
Now design three sandboxes. One is on the ground, and two others are on raised platforms. One is at knee level, and the other is at waist level. Kids who can sit, stand, and kneel can play at any of them. Kids in wheelchairs, or others who can’t easily play on the ground, can use the raised ones. If all three sandboxes are right next to each other, all sorts of kids can play together.
While you’re looking at playgrounds with a designer’s eye, you’ll probably notice that some aren’t very accessible. Many old playgrounds weren’t designed with a range of abilities in mind. It can be expensive to change that. Still, accessible playgrounds are becoming more common. Doesn’t every kid deserve to have fun?

27、 Tune in tonight at 6:00 p.m. to catch a science awards ceremony like no other. The 30th First Annual Ig Nobel Prizes celebrates unusual scientific research “that makes people laugh, then think,” according to the Annals of Improbable Research (AIR), the magazine that organizes the annual event.
Now in its 30th year, the Ig Nobels ceremony is always officially described as the “First Annual” because “every year is a new beginning,” master of ceremonies and AIR editor Marc Abrahams told Live Science in 2016.
Former winners of Ig Nobel Prizes explored questions such as: Why do old men have big ears? Can you unboil a hard-boiled egg? And the eternal puzzle: Are cats a solid or a liquid?
Since 1991, the ceremony has unfolded in front of a packed house at Harvard University’s Sanders Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Nobel winners typically hand the winners their awards. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic (新冠肺炎), the 2020 award ceremony has been prerecorded, but it will still offer a science-themed opera- a long-standing Ig Nobel tradition, performed by opera singers and scientists from the Boston area-as well as plenty of surprises, Abrahams told Live Science.
“Every part of the ceremony has been re-designed, because of the pandemic,” AIR representatives said in a statement. “The organizers even invented a new way for a Nobel winners on one continent to “physically” hand an Ig Nobel Prize to a new Ig Nobel Prize winner on a different continent.”
How is that even possible? You’ll have to watch the Ig Nobels to find out.
The ceremony will be broadcast live here on Live Science as well as on YouTube and AIR’s Facebook page as in previous years. Versions of the ceremony with translations in Japanese, Chinese and Spanish, will premiere at the same time as the U.S. version and will be accessible from the AIR website.
【1】Why is the 30th First Annual Ig Nobel Prizes called the “First Annual”?
A.Because every year is a new start.
B.Because the ceremony is brand new this year.
C.Because the ceremony is organized by the AIR for the first time.
D.Because the aim of the ceremony is to make people laugh and think.
【2】What can we conclude according to Marc Abrahams?
A.The Ig Nobel ceremony is always recorded in advance.
B.The 2020 Ig Nobel ceremony has prepared many surprises.
C.Ig Noble competitors are addicted to strange but meaningful questions.
D.It’s an Ig Nobel tradition to invite scientists around the world to perform.
【3】How is the 2020 Ig Nobel ceremony different from before?
A.All details about the ceremony will be broadcast online.
B.It has been put off because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
C.Nobelists cannot give awards to the Ig Nobel winners in person.
D.It will offer a science-themed opera performed by singers and scientists.
【4】Where can you most probably find the text?
A.On a website B.On a noticeboard.
C.In a science guidebook. D.In a daily newspaper.
28、 As the summer travel season rolls in, prices at the gas pump are usually going in the wrong direction for our wallets. That’s when drivers become more concerned about how to squeeze the most miles from their fuel dollars and keep their cars running their best. To help you stay in the know, here are some common questions that our auto-experts often get asked about gas mileage and related topics:
What if I need to carry stuff on my car’s roof?
Carrying things on the roof hurts fuel economy. When tested a 2013 Honda Accord at a steady 65 mph①, it got 42 mpg② with nothing on the roof. Adding even an empty bike rack(架子)dropped the mileage by 5 mpg. And with two bikes on the roof, gas mileage dropped to 27mpg.
Does running the A/C① hurt fuel economy compared with opening the windows?
It depends on-how hard the air-conditioning system has to work. When we measured the fuel-economy difference, we found that fuel use with the A/C running went up with higher outside temperatures. At 55℃ F, there were unnoticeable differences. But when we measured again on days when the temperature was in the low 70s and high 80s, we got fewer miles per gallon with the A/C on.
How far can I go when my low-fuel warning light comes on?
There is no set rule, but most cars have a reserve of between 1 and 2 gallons of gas when the light goes on, or enough to travel about 40 miles or so at a moderate speed. To maximize those last couple of gallons, we suggest slowing down and maintaining a steady pace.
Can I improve gas mileage by installing a special air filter(过滤器)?
With modern cars, changing your air filter probably won’t improve your fuel economy. When we tested a car to see whether a dirty air filter hurt its gas mileage because of reduced air intake, we found that the car’s fuel economy wasn’t hurt. The engine’s computer automatically made up for the restricted airflow by reducing fuel use to maintain the right air/fuel proportion. We expect similar results from any air-filter change.
①mph: mile per hour
②mpg: mile per gallon
③A/C: air-conditioning
【1】The passage is intended to give answers to questions related to _____.
A.how to save fuel

A.a special air filter be installed to improve air intake
B.the engine’s computer be updated as often as possible
C.drivers carry an empty bike rack on the roof just in case
D.cars move at a fixed low speed with a warning of low fuel
【3】At which temperature is there a most noticeable difference in fuel economy between running A/C and opening the window?
A.40° F B.51° F
C.55° F D.73° F
