二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Peter loved to shop used articles. Almost a month ago, he bought popular word game that used little pieces of wood with different letters on them. As he was purchasing it, the salesgirl said, “Uh, look, the game box hasn’t even been opened yet. That might be worth some money. ”

Peter examined the box, and, sure enough, it was completely covered in factory-sealed plastic. And he saw a date of 1973 on the back of the box.

“You should put that up for auction (拍卖) on the Internet, and see what happens.” the salesgirl said.

“Yes, you’re right. People like something rare.” Peter agreed, “I can’t imagine there being very many unopened boxes of this game still around 40 years later.”

“Don’t forget to tell me if you sell it.” the salesgirl smiled.

    “No problem.” Peter said.

After he got home, Peter went online to several auction websites looking for his game. But he couldn’t find it. Then he typed in the name of the word game and hit Search. The search result was 543 websites containing information about the changes of the game. Over the years, the game had been produced using letters in different sizes and game boards in different colors. He also found some lists of game fans looking for various versions of the game. Peter emailed some of them, telling them what he had.

Two weeks later, Peter went back to the shop.

“Hello. Do you still remember the unopened word game?”

The salesgirl looked at him for a second, then recognized him and said, “Oh, hi!”

”I’ve got something for you,” Peter said. “I sold the game and made $1,000. Thank you for your suggestion.” He handed her three $ 100 bills.

“Wow!” the salesgirl cried out. “Thank you, I never expected it.”

1Which of the following best describes Peter’s word game?

    A. It was made around 40 years ago.

    B. It had game boards in different sizes.

    C. It was kept in a plastic bag with a seal.

    D. It had little pieces of wood in different colors.

2What did the salesgirl probably think of Peter’s word game?

    A. Old and handy.   B. Rare and valuable.

    C. Classic and attractive.   D. Colorful and interesting

3What happened at the end of the story?

    A. Peter gave the girl $300 as a reward.

    B. The salesgirl became Peter’s friend.

    C. Peter returned the word game for $ 1,000.

    D. The salesgirl felt confused to see Peter again.

4What is the main theme of the story?

    A. It’s important to keep a promise.

    B. It’s great to share in other people’s happiness.

    C. We should be grateful for the help from others.

    D. Something rare is worth a large amount of money.

  • 27、I am a professor of clinical psychology. Some time ago, I got halfway through a day of teaching before a co-worker pointed out to me I was quite carelessly wearing a pair of different shoes, one red and one black. I felt so embarrassed and upset but I would have to go teach my course like this. When I noticed how much I wanted to disappear and avoid this situation, I was determined to face it instead. I walked into class and announced to the students that I was wearing two shoes from different pairs, and directed their attention to my feet. Everyone laughed and we went on with class. Years later, a student in that class told me that this was the moment she first thought that maybe, just maybe, she could be a professor, too.

I shared my mistake because I realized that trying hide it was interfering with my ability to concentrate my mind on my teaching — but I had no idea that it would also help shorten the psychological distance between my students and myself.

Many contexts may punish or shame people for making mistakes. Our efforts to avoid them result from our desires for success, and how others will respond to our mistakes. We might feel self-criticism and shame if we do make some.

However, mistake making is part of learning new things, and it can draw us closer to others. It opens up the possibility of accepting mistakes gladly, letting us be more open and engaged in what we are doing.

We can say words of kindness and self-compassion to ourselves: Mistakes are natural and human; we can be kind to ourselves for this error and still try to do better next time; noticing our own imperfections can help us to be kind to others when we notice they are imperfect, too. When we practice our mistakes in this way, they can become opportunities to open up to others, learn about ourselves, and connect even more with what matters to us.

【1】How does the author develop paragraph 1?

    A.By giving some examples.

    B.By following time order.

    C.By doing scientific experiments.

    D.By sharing personal experience.

【2】What was the result of the author sharing his mistake?

    A.Shameful.

    B.Unexpected.

    C.Punishable.

    D.Unaccepted.

【3】What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us?

    A.Intentions to avoid mistakes.

    B.Advantages of making mistakes.

    C.Possibilities of making mistakes.

    D.Efforts to avoid making mistakes.

【4】What can we know about mistakes from the last paragraph?

A.They interfere with what we are doing.

B.They draw too much attention from us.

C.They are big opportunities to get us improved.

D.They make us feel irresponsible and defeated.

  • 28、In some islands north of Scotland, head lice, which live on the hair or skin of people or animals, were a part of life. If the lice left their host, he became sick and feverish. Therefore, sick people had lice put in their hair intentionally. There was a method to their madness: As soon as the lice had settled in again, the patient improved. The story explains the confusion of cause and effect. If the lice leave the sick, it is because he has a fever and they simply get hot feet. When the fever breaks, they return. We may laugh at this story, but false causality misleads us practically every day.

Consider the headline: “Fact: Women Who Use Shampoo XYZ Every Day Have Stronger Hair.” This statement says very little — least of all, that the shampoo makes your hair stronger. It might simply be the other way round: Women with strong hair tend to use Shampoo XYZ-and perhaps that’s because it says “especially for thick hair” on the bottle.

A further example: Scientists found that long periods in the hospital did harm to patients. This was music to health insurers’ ears, who, of course, are keen to make stays as brief as possible. But, clearly, patients who are dismissed immediately are healthier than those who must stay on for treatment.

Recently I read that students get better grades at school if their homes contain a lot of books. This study was surely a shot in the arm for booksellers, but it is also an example of false causality. This simple truth is that educated parents tend to value their children’s education more than uneducated ones do. Plus, educated parents often have more books at home. In short, a dust-covered copy of War and Peace alone isn’t going to influence anyone’s grades; what counts is parents’ education levels, as well as their genes.

Another example of false causality was the supposed relationship between the birth rate and the numbers of stork (鹳) pairs in Germany. Both were in decline, and if you plot them on a graph, the two lines of development from 1965 to 1987 appeared almost the same. Does this mean the stork actually does bring babies? Obviously not, since this was a purely accidental connection. In conclusion: Connection is not causality. Take a closer look at linked events: Sometimes what is presented as the cause turns out to be the effect, or just the other way around. And sometimes there is no link at all — just like with the storks and babies.

【1】Which is an example of false causality?

A.The birth rate and stork population in Germany are connected.

B.The women with strong hair tend to use a certain shampoo.

C.Longer periods in the hospital benefit patients.

D.Lice can make a person sick and feverish.

【2】The underlined phrase “a shot in the arm” in Paragraph 4 means ________.

    A.pain

    B.defeat

    C.guidance

    D.encouragement

【3】According to the author, students get better grades probably because ________.

A.their homes are full of books

B.they have read War and Peace

    C.their educated parents value education

    D.their parents are successful booksellers

【4】It can be concluded from the passage that ________.

    A.connections are pure accidents

    B.cause and effect are interdependent

C.connections are mostly cause and effect

D.linked events may turn out to be unrelated

  • 29、   The world’s first zero-carbon city is being built in Abu Dhabi and is designed to be not only free of cars and high buildings but also powered by the sun.

The oil-rich United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the last place you would expect to learn lessons on low-carbon living, but the eco-city of Masdar could teach the world. While the presence of fossil fuel (矿物燃料) has helped make UAE one of the world’s wealthiest countries, the officials there are well aware that the oil wells will eventually run dry, leaving them with no choice, but to use renewable sources of energy.

Masdar is combining 21st-century engineering with traditional desert architecture to create zero-carbon comfort. It will house about 50,000 people, at least 1,000 businesses and a university. It is being designed by the British architectural firm Foster + Partners. The architects are turning the desert’s greatest threat-the sun-into their greatest fortune. They have built the biggest solar farm in the Middle East to power the city.

Traditional cars must be checked in at the city gates before you enter the city. And you can choose between the oldest and newest ways of transport. At street level, the streets will be narrow, just to let people walk by and so the buildings will shade each other, and the planners have done their best to keep the city foot-friendly. But if you feel tired, you can go down a level to take mini vehicles. These driverless vehicles can carry up to 6 people and will be solar powered or battery operated. They are programmed to go where you ask.

Water that is used in homes or for gardens will be recycled. All waste will be converted to energy or as nutrients for soil. The whole purpose of Masdar City is to reuse or recycle everything that is in it even some of the construction materials around gardens and city.

1Why did UAE decide to build a zero-carbon city?

A.Because the oil wells may dry up in the future.

B.Because the low-carbon living is very popular.

C.Because the price of fossil fuel is always on the rise.

D.Because the air pollution is becoming a global danger.

2What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?

A.The strict limitations on traditional cars.

    B.The benefits of foot-friendly streets.

C.The means of transportation in Masdar.

D.The convenience of taking driverless vehicles.

3What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.Homes or gardens. B.Masdar City.

    C.Nutrients for soil. D.Construction materials.

4In which part of the newspaper can you probably read the text?

    A.Sports. B.science.

    C.Business. D.Culture.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box… Each word can only be used once. Do note that there is one word more than you need.

What’s the point of reading if we all forget what we read sooner or later? Being a liberal arts (文科) teacher, more often than not, I will find myself confronted with this sort of question. And knowing that I am not in a good position to 1 this question which can be simple and hard at the same time, I always quote what William Johnson Cory has written in a letter in which he articulates (清晰表达) the purpose of education. From my perspective, his words can also be taken as a 2 argument for reading. The full quotation goes:

“At school you are 3 not so much in acquiring knowledge as in making mental efforts under criticism. A certain amount of knowledge you can indeed with average faculties acquire so as to retain; nor need you 4 the hours you spent on much that is forgotten, for the 5 of lost knowledge at least protects you from many illusions. But you go to a great school not so much for knowledge as for arts and habits: for the habit of attention, for the art of entering 6 into another person’s thoughts, for the habit of submitting to censure (批判) and refutation (反驳), for the art if indicating assent (附议) or dissent (异议) in gradated terms, for the habit of regarding minute points of accuracy, for the art of working out what is possible in a given time, for taste, for discrimination, for mental courage, and for mental soberness (清醒).”

Besides, even though we eventually forget most of what we read, there can still be 7 in the moments of reading a particular book in a particular place. What I remember most about Hemingway’s short-story 8 Men Without Women is the persistent cough I had due to a heavy cold, which at that time did give me a strong feeling that I would also like to die for my beloved.

So the purpose of reading is not to memorize 9 everything we read but to keep reading. After all, if there are no 10 opinions on the idea that we are what we eat then we are also what we read.
