  • 26、Pandas are not only a national streasure, but are loved around the world. Recently, a giant panda cub born in August at the Smithsnian’s National Zoo, US, was given the name Xiao Qi Ji, which is translated into English as “little miracle”. Interestingly, National Public Radio said that in a nod to Chinese tradition, the name was not chosen until 100 days after the birth.

This cub’s birth proved to be quite inspiring — and at a time when inspiration was truly needed. “Xiao Qi Ji’s birth is a true miracle that has been so up-lifting to all of us during the pandemic (瘟疫), ” Chinese Ambassador (大使) to the US Cui Tiankai said in a video congratulatory message. “ 【1】

The furry black-and-white animals have played an important role in the country’s diplomacy, known as “panda diplomacy”. According to the Japanese Royal Annual, the practice dates back to the Tang Dynasty, when Empress Wu Zetian sent a pair of pandas to the Japanese emperor. China revived panda diplomacy in the 1950s when China sent two pandas to the Moscow Zoo. By 1982, China and given 23 pandas to nine different countries. However, most of them have died. China stopped giving away pandas in the early 1980s. 【2】

But why do these cute “diplomats” find it hard to survive in other countries? According to Xinhua, their dietary habit is one significant reason. Their nutrition mostly comes from bamboo shoots. 【3】 They refuse to eat bamboo shoots after they have bloossomed.

It takes 10 years for a new crop of bamboo to mature, and many countries do not have an environment suitable for bamboo growth. This means that food has to be imported. In August, Calgary Zoo in Canada announced that due to pandemic-related changes in its impart laws and quarantine methods, they couldn’t provide enough fresh bamboo for pandas. This meant that they had to send two giant pandas back to China.

【4】 “We don’t own the pandas, but the whole world wants to help save the panda, and we do that through our knowledge exchange, ” Steven Monfort, director of the smithsonian’s National Zoo, told China daily.

A.People are connected again in the growth of our little ambassador, and in our shared joy and friendship.

B.The giant pandas will smell their bamboo repeatedly after grabbing a stalk.

C.Adult giant pandas consume about 40 kilograms of bamboo daily, and they can also be quite picky.

D.The choice was the result of a five-day online vote that drew nearly 135,000 voters in the US.

E.But countries are still trying their best to facilitate (促进) this special type of diplomacy.

F.Instead, the animals are loaned to other countries and generally they are to be returned to China after 10 years.

  • 27、Somewhere near the North Pole, in a small tent on a floating ice, Borge Ousland’s satellite phone buzzed. It was November 20, 2019, and Ousland, the leading polar explorer of his generation, and adventurer Mike Horn had set out two months earlier with an great goal: to ski across the top of the world. They’d been in total isolation (孤立) ever since, making their way, step by step, along the increasingly fragile (易碎的) ice floating over the Arctic Ocean. It was one of the most daring polar journeys in history—and the men were in trouble. The ice was breaking around them, opening in gaping cracks (裂缝), the most critical challenge. Not a single ship or fishing boat was around there. Slowed by the poor conditions, the sleds they pulled were nearly empty of food. Horn’s frostbitten hands, virtually useless in the cold, were dangerously infected.

Now their expedition (探险) manager, Lars Ebbesen, was on the phone from Norway with a lifeline. A passing Norwegian icebreaker happened to be in the sea north of Svalbard and would briefly be in position to serve as a refueling platform for a helicopter (直升机) to reach them. For one day only, they could be rescued. Should he give the OK to start the rescue? Ebbesen, who had worked with Ousland for years, had never heard him so exhausted and “into his resources”. Yet the legendary Arctic strongman, speaking in a weary tone, did not hesitate or consult his partner, “No, we will continue.”

Newspapers actively covered the men’s daring journey across front pages and TV news broadcast regular updates. Ousland’s son was having trouble sleeping and told reporters that at 57 his father was “not as young as he was before”. Ousland’s mother, who had never before felt the need to call Ebbesen and check on her son during expeditions, rang over and over.

But the two chose to continue and luckily enough they finally arrived at north pole and attained enormous precious photos there. After 87 days in Arctic isolation, the two men came back and delivered a television interview. People honoured them as national heroes.

【1】What is a key trouble facing the two men?

A.They run out of food and energy.

    B.Horn’s hands were totally useless.

C.Their health was in poor condition.

D.Floating ice kept cracking around them.

【2】What would be sent to rescue them if they had agreed?

    A.A helicopter.

    B.A rescue team.

    C.An icebreaker.

    D.A fishing boat.

【3】How does Ousland’s son feel about the journey?

    A.Inspired.

    B.Satisfied.

    C.Concerned.

    D.Interested.

【4】Which can be the best title for the text?

A.People Have Great Interest in North Pole Expedition

B.The Exploration Conditions of North Pole Are Tough

C.Two Brave Men Made an Exciting Trip to the North Pole

D.Two Famous Explorers Were Saved During Their Exploration

  • 28、   A team of researchers led by engineers from Penn State University has created the first material that heals itself in the presence of water, according to a study published in Scientific Reports. The material, inspired by squid (鱿鱼)teeth, could be used to repair instruments in water-filled environments that are difficult to access, such as the human body, or the bottom of the sea.

The researchers had been studying squids' ring teeth, which are uniquely strong and can change state from liquid to solid in the presence of water. After testing ring teeth samples from several species of squid found all over the world, the researchers uncovered the genetic code for the proteins (蛋白质)that allow the teeth to heal themselves when broken. They then changed the genetic structure of bacteria to produce the proteins so they could conduct more tests.

The researchers then made the proteins into a rubbery plastic by mixing them with a solvent ( )and letting the solvent change into a gas. The resulting material combines a soft, shapeless part of the protein that gives the plastic its self-healing characteristics and a more structured sheet of amino acids(氨基酸)that give it a solid structure.

To test the material's strength, the researchers cut it, and then put the two pieces back together with a drop of water. They found that the material healed best at 113 degrees Fahrenheit, a little warmer than the temperature of the human body, and with slight pressure from a metal tool. The material was just as strong, and able to hold the same amount of weight, before and after it was cut.

Material that heals itself in the presence of water could expand the usability of biomedical implants (移植). Of course, this material is nowhere near ready for that application, and the researchers didn't test whether the constant presence of water degrades (降低)the plastic's ability to heal itself. The researchers next plan to study how their technology could help heal wounds.

1According to paragraph 3, the rubbery plastic become self-healing in combination with.

A.amino acids B.another kind of rubber

C.a mixture of gases D.some protein

2In paragraph 4, the researchers carried out a test to check whether the material.

    A.was fit for human body

    B.would melt at high temperatures

C.could be connected with the metal

D.would recover its original strength after healing itself

3What is the authors attitude towards the self-healing material?

    A.Positive. B.Objective. C.Doubtful. D.Critical.

4What is the main idea of the text?

A.A kind of self-healing teeth was made from squids' ring teeth.

B.The genetic code of squids' special teeth has been uncovered.

C.Super-strong material inspired by squid teeth is self-healing.

D.A special rubbery plastic is used to replace squids' teeth.

  • 29、Two years ago, enormous fires swept through some 46 million acres of forest in Russia, the country’s worst fire season on record. Now, researchers have a clearer sense of just how significant the 2021 boreal(北方的)forest fires were in terms of emissions. The fires produced more planet-heating carbon dioxide than any other extreme fire event that has occurred since the turn of the 21st century, according to a study.

Boreal forests grow where it is very cold. The trees that live in this type of forest grow slowly and seal (封存) carbon in their trunks and roots for hundreds of years, comprising a collection of trapped emissions that researchers call a carbon sink. But rising temperatures and related drought in these historically cool regions have led to an increase in extreme wildfire activity and threaten to release the carbon stored in the trees that grow there, transforming a carbon sink into a carbon source.

In all, fires in boreal forests released the carbon sink and produced nearly half a billion metric tons of carbon in 2021.That’s more carbon than the entire continent of Australia produced the same year, though some of the emissions produced by the fires will be sucked back up as forests regrow.

The researchers obtained the data for their study by tracking concentrations of emissions in the atmosphere using satellites, and then they put that information into a computer model to determine where, geographically, those emissions came from. They found that boreal forests, which typically produce about 10 percent of the globe’s annual wildfire emissions, accounted for 23 percent of the world’s wildfire emissions in 2021—more than twice as much as normal.

Canadell, who led the study, is most concerned about the study’s main takeaway; Boreal forests have served an important and underappreciated role in sequestering carbon emissions, but climate change threatens to release that carbon. “We need to be very careful with these systems in terms of their future development,” he said.

【1】What is the function of paragraph 2?

A.To explain the source of carbon.

    B.To illustrate two scientific concepts.

C.To indicate the seriousness of the fire.

D.To show the importance of boreal forests.

【2】How did the scientists get needed data?

    A.By employing technology.

    B.By searching on the website.

    C.By analyzing previous data.

    D.By turning to the firefighters.

【3】What does the underlined word “sequestering” in paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.Assessing.

    B.Increasing.

    C.Monitoring.

    D.Preventing.

【4】What is mainly talked about in the text?

A.The reasons for the forest fires in the north.

B.The impact of the 2021 boreal forest fires.

C.The link between fires and carbon dioxide.

    D.The increasingly growing carbon emissions.

  • 31、

For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a 1 conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about 2: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?

Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to any responsibility for starting it. From the parents' point of view, the only 3 of their fight is their adolescents' complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped.

In this article, I'll describe three no-win situations that commonly 4 between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over 5 things. Examples include the color of the teen's hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child's failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his 6 to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad 7 is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn't matter what the topic is--politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg--the 8 of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority--someone who actually knows something--and therefore to 9 respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to 10 that they know more than the other, they'll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.
