  • 27、Wang Yaping’s dream of becoming an astronaut was inspired by Yang Liwei’s 2003 space flight, which was China’s first manned space mission.

Born in a small village in Yantai, Shandong Province in   1980, Wang had been an enthusiastic long-distance runner since primary school, and competed in local sports meetings.

In 1997, Wang, a high school student, was encouraged to register for the pilot recruitment program by her classmates because she was good at sports and didn’t wear glasses. The 17-year-old had been considering applying to a teaching college, as her parents suggested.

Given her strong build and ability to stay calm under pressure, Wang passed all tests as well as physical examinations and became a female pilot in China. After four years of systemic education and tough training, Wang eventually learned to fly four different types of aircraft before graduation.

During her service as a military pilot, she accumulated 1,567 hours of flight time and was involved in major tasks such as the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake relief effort and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

In May 2010, Wang became a member of China’s first batch of female astronauts. The joy of being selected did not last long as the hard training quickly sank in.

In the first year, Wang could not get the top level in the high-G training, during which she had to endure eight times the force of gravity in a spinning centrifuge. The training imitates the environment when the spacecraft takes off, enters orbit and returns. Wang improved her performance by doing extra core-strength exercises every day to strengthen her back and abdominal muscles. She got the top level at the end of 2011. Wang realized her space dream in 2013 as part of the Shenzhou-10 mission.

Over the past two years, Wang has logged in over 6,000 hours of strict training. The most tiring exercise was the seven-hour underwater training session during which she had to wear a special suit that weighed over 100 kilograms to simulate extravehicular activities in a weightless environment.

Wang has become the first female taikonaut to work in China’s Tiangong space station as well as the first Chinese woman to perform a spacewalk.

【1】Why did Wang want to become an astronaut?

A.Because she was able to stay calm under pressure.

B.Because she was good at sports and didn’t wear glasses.

C.Because she was advised to register for the pilot program by her parents.

  • 28、Two pig farmers in Suffolk, East England have succeeded in feeding one million bees after participating in a project that saw them turn over half of their land to wildflowers. Four years ago, brothers Mark and Paul Hayward decided to fill 81 acres of their farm land with wildflowers. This week, a study was carried out monitoring insect activity on the flower-covered land, which found they were feeding one million bees at any time.

"This was our target when we started, to grow enough flowers to feed a million bees on a single day." Mark said. "We are acutely aware that bees are under threat from modern farming methods and that East England is one of the worst places where bees are seriously suffering from lack of foraging diversity(觅食多样性)," he continued.

"Every third bite of food you eat can come from bees and we wanted to create an operation on our farm that did not push nature out but rather hugged it-as a central part of our ecology system and our food cycle," he said.

The farm uses all kinds of seeds which can produce many different wild plants and of course, the bees can get food from different wildflowers.

"We are taking a very small role in helping society restore a balance and this starts with plant diversity to encourage insects, bees, small mammals(哺乳动物), and birds," said Paul. "At the end of the day, we see ourselves as caretakers of this land. Between us we have six children and we owe it to them to farm sustainability(持续性)and set an example for the generations to come, " added Paul.

According to the Bee Conservation Trust, many types of bees have seen their populations decline by 70%, and two species have become extinct in the last century.

Gill Perkins, CEO of the Bee Conservation Trust said, "Thanks to Mark and Paul, at least here, 1 million bees can keep living, which is of great significance for ourselves now and future."

【1】What can we know about the brothers from the first two paragraphs?

A.They have about 160 acres of land.

B.They grow wild flowers for pigs.

C.They are not good at growing wild flowers.

D.They have to support 1, 000, 000 bees in their land.

【2】Why are bees under threat in East England?

A.There is not enough food for bees.

B.Bees are not used to the modern society.

C.There are too many animals eating bees.

D.Bees can not find different wild flowers.

【3】What is the Gill Perkins' attitude to the action?

    A.Opposed.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Disappointed.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.The Bees are in Danger Now

C.One Million Bees are Surviving in East England

D.Two Brothers Love Wild Flowers in East England

  • 29、   Across cultures, we write different songs for different purposes. A new study examines how music travels around the world, despite its incredible diversity within cultures.

Sam Mehr, a psychologist at Harvard, kept reading a statement that said, "Music is universal." But every time there was nothing to back it up. To see if there was any proof to this claim, he and his fellow researchers created two databases: one with descriptions from anthropologists of what happened when music from the 60s was playing, and another of 118 audio recordings from 86 different societies. He found that there were three characteristics of behavior that consistently characterized music: formality, arousal (or how calm or exciting a song was), and religiosity. Most societies had music that fell into more than one category.

“People did a good job guessing the themes. Music appears in this huge diversity, but it does so similarly across societies,” says author Manvir Singh, a Harvard Ph. D. student in the department of human evolutionary biology.

Daniel Levitin, who's done similar research on music and evolution, believes this kind of systematic approach to understanding music is long overdue. He also says that the study points to an evolutionary history between music and humans.

For Mehr and his team, the hunt for data is just the beginning. The lab is running more detailed quizzes to dig into how people respond to what they hear. They also hope to do studies on different populations to see how they react to tunes from faraway societies.

“Exploring the lyrics allows us to better understand how music can call for these emotional or behavioral responses,” says Singh, “but also, in a broader way, the world view of the people who are singing.”

1Why did Sam Mehr start his research?

A.To support his statement of music. B.To find evidence for "Music is universal".

C.To prove the diversities of music worldwide. D.To examine music at different periods.

2How is Sam Mehr's research carried out?

A.By giving quizzes. B.By observing objects.

C.By looking up documentaries. D.By interviewing music writers.

3What does the underlined word "category" in Paragraph 2 most likely mean?

    A.Tune. B.Version. C.Catalogue. D.Style.

4The writing purpose of the last paragraph is to show

A.the necessity of continuing the research B.the significance of exploring lyrics

C.the function of music in evolution D.the benefit of understanding music
