二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move around. As we know, we sit while we’re eating, we sit in the car and we sit while we're watching TV. And many of us sit for many hours at work.

New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. Peter Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitous in our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere.

However, Mr.Katzmarzyk says even that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. He also says you may exercise often. “We can’t throw away physical activity. It’s extremely important. We have 60 years of research showing us that.”

Mr.Katzmarzyk and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how sitting all day affects length of life. “Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality (死亡率)or television viewing and mortality are very rare. There have only been a few of them, actually five or six now,in the last four or five years.” They found that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one-point four years to life.

Luckily, change is already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing desk” lets people stand while they are working. Another new design is called the “treadmill desk”. A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U.S. schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving, That’s one of the strategies that many companies are using now.

Mr. Katzmarzyk also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in their own lives.

【1】The underlined word “ubiquitous” is the closest .

    A.危险的

    B.尴尬的

    C.舒适的

    D.普遍的

【2】Which view agrees with the opinion of Mr. Katmarzyk?

A.Sitting too long may help increase one’s life.

B.Exercise is important, but so is not sitting.

C.Watching TV is bad, but can broaden one’s horizons.

D.Stopping watching TV is a necessary but hard task.

【3】What does Mr. Katzmarzyk think of his study in Paragraph 4?

A.It’s a relatively new area of study.

B.It’s a hot subject studied by experts.

C.It’s a study that begins too late.

    D.It’s ignored by many experts.

【4】Why are the desks of all kinds designed for those who sit more?

A.To give them more comfort .

    B.To improve their work efficiency.

C.To offer them the chance to exercise.

    D.To seek pleasure while working.

  • 27、Robots have certain advantages compared to humans. They are efficient, tireless, can be repaired when damaged and they never get sick. The last quality has made them the star during our fight against the COVID-19(新冠肺炎). While thousands of medical workers have fallen ill dealing with this highly infectious virus and a lot more have to stay at home for fear of getting the disease, this isn’t a problem for robots. This is why the COVID-19 outbreak is seen as the “tipping point” for robots to start to replace humans in certain jobs.

In hospitals, robots are used to perform high-risk tasks. In China, for example, a hotel in Hangzhou employed a robot to deliver food to people under quarantine(隔离). In Spain, robots are about to be used to test people for the coronavirus(冠状病毒).

In non-medical companies, robots are also replacing human employees since they don’t have the problem of the social distancing and will never take sick leave. Fast-food chains like McDonald’s are not only delivering food with robots in some areas, but also looking to use them as cooks and servers. Walmart and Amazon, for example, where robots are already used in packing and shipping, are planning to increase the number of robots in these areas.

But this sudden boom in robot demand doesn’t mean that they can replace humans successfully in every aspect. According to Bill Smart, a roboticist at Oregon State University, the human contact between doctors and patients is still important. Doctors comfort the patients and guide them through hard decisions while robots are only doing daily tasks, like cleaning and giving tests.

It might be true that robots have certain advantages over humans, but they are still secondary to human’s communication and emotion.

【1】Which of the following is not the advantage of robots over human beings?

    A.They never fall ill.

    B.They can offer emotion support.

    C.They are efficient in work.

D.They can be repaired when damaged.

【2】Why does the author take McDonald’s and Walmart as examples?

A.To explain robots are more intelligent than humans.

B.To prove robots have social ability wherever they are.

C.To explain how robots replace humans in non-medical companies.

D.To prove McDonald’s and Walmart are famous companies in the world.

【3】What’s the meaning of the underlined part “sudden boom” in Paragraph 4?

    A.Sharp increase.

    B.Low supply.

    C.Short explosion.

    D.Excellent performance.

【4】What’s the best title of this passage?

    A.The Efficient Tireless Robots

    B.Robots Will Replace Humans

    C.Robots Aid in Coronavirus Fight

    D.The demand For Robots Increase

  • 29、Long-time exposure to air pollution can lead to physical changes in the brain and cause trouble in learning and memory, and even anxiety. This is suggested by the results of new research on mice.

While other studies have shown the harmful effects of polluted air in the lungs and heart, this is the first to show the negative effect on the brain.

The team of Laura Fonken, Randy Nelson, from the Ohio State University, USA, has spread to the brain a previous line of research which found that fine particulate (微粒) matter floating in the air mainly because of air pollution caused by humans, causes swelling in much of the body, and may be related to high blood pressure problems, and some other diseases.

In the research Fonken and his colleagues exposed mice to polluted air for six hours each day, five days a week, over a period of 10 months, almost half the average life length of mice.

Polluted air contains fine particles created by cars, factories and natural dust. Fine particles of this kind are tiny, about 2.5 micrometers in diameter, or about one-thirtieth the width of a human hair. These particles can go deep into lungs and other organs.

The concentration of this particulate material to which they exposed mice is equal to the concentration at which people can be exposed in some polluted urban areas.

After a period of 10 months, the researchers got the animals to have a series of behavioral tests. Both the behavior of mice and the results of neurological(神经的) tests done to them show that those within the polluted air had more problems in learning and memory, and higher levels of anxiety.

The results suggest that long-time exposure to polluted air can have measurable negative effects on the human brain and can cause a variety of mental health problems. This could have important consequences for those living and working in polluted urban areas.

【1】The results of new research on mice first suggest that polluted air mainly does harm to ________.

    A. normal organs     B. lungs and heart

    C. mental health     D. blood pressure

【2】The bad effects of tiny particles in polluted air are those except ________.

    A. high blood pressure problems

    B. making human hair thinner

    C. different kinds of diseases

    D. swelling in much of the body

【3】From the last sentence we can infer that people living in polluted urban areas ________.

    A. are likely to suffer from mental problems

    B. can measure the negative effect on them

    C. show little concern for air pollution

    D. can be exposed to polluted air longer

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

    A. Long-time Exposure to Air Pollution

    B. Evidence and Concern of Air Pollution

    C. Measurable Effect on Human Brain

    D. Mental Problems Caused by Air Pollution
