26、Seagrass meadows(海草床)are wonder plants growing beneath the sea. They feed and shelter sea life and are masterful at storing carbon.
Seagrass has usually been detected by Earth-orbiting satellites that identify darker patches in the blue water. In this study, tiger sharks were selected as research tools due to their highly consistent associations with seagrass ecosystems. They spend 70% of their time in seagrass meadows. The team equipped eight tiger sharks with satellite tags and used a 360-degree camera on them for the first time ever.
The data researchers collected was astonishing. The world’s largest seagrass ecosystem, measuring at least 66,900 square kilometers, has been discovered. This reflects a 41% increase from previous estimates of global seagrass. Seagrass can capture(捕获)huge quantities of carbon by photosynthesis and stores it on the seafloor. In terms of climate change, this is excellent news; seagrass is 35 times faster at removing carbon than tropical rainforests. When referred to global seagrass carbon stock estimates, the study indicates that seagrass in the Bahamas may contain 19.2% to 26.3% of all the carbon stored in seagrass meadows on Earth.
Yet seagrass meadows are rapidly disappearing, with over 92% of meadows in the UK gone, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Scientists are collecting seeds and trying to grow new seagrass meadows through restoration projects.
The sharks led us to the seagrass ecosystem in the Bahamas, which we now know is likely the most significant blue carbon sink on the planet. What this discovery shows us is that ocean exploration and research are essential for a healthy future. The untapped potential of the ocean is limitless, offering hope for climate change around the globe.

29、Natural gas produces half as much CO2 when burned as coal, but that doesn't make it harmless. Climate scientists say that rising production of natural gas is becoming one of the biggest driving forces of climate change and that plans for industry expansion could stop efforts to make the Earth’s climate steady. The U. S. energy industry plans to spend hundreds of billions of dollars building pipelines and receiving stations in coming years to increase exports of natural gas in supercooled liquefied form, known as LNG(液化天然气).
Climate scientists are concerned about another greenhouse gas that leaks(泄漏) into the atmosphere during natural gas production: methane. Methane has a warming effect up to 80 or 90 times more powerful than CO2 over a 20-year timescale. Many companies say they have been doing more to find and fix methane leaks.
What about gas as a temporary “bridge fuel” to a cleaner future? The industry often describes natural gas as a vital “bridge” to help change from relying on coal-fired power to cleaner sources of energy. Advocates of natural gas argue that gas-fired power plants can provide continuous electricity, backing up wind and solar operations. Climate scientists are increasingly concerned, however, that plans to expand the industry a lot mean that using natural gas as a “bridge” could end up locking the world into a high-carbon and fast-warming future.
【1】What does burning natural gas result in compared with burning coal?
A.Producing more greenhouses.
B.Making air much dirtier.
C.Providing less electricity.
D.Giving off 1/2 CO2
【2】What does the U. S. energy industry plan to do?
A.Expand exports of LNG.
B.Find and fix methane leaks.
C.Make the Earth’s climate steady.
D.Build pipelines and oil stations.

A.burning natural gas does no harm to the climate
B.natural gas is a vital “bridge” to help rely on coal-burned power
C.the natural gas production is the smallest driving force of climate change
D.methane is a more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2 in a warming effect
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.Efforts to avoid climate disaster.
B.Worries about a warming future.
C.Plans for expanding gas industry.
D.Ways to produce cleaner natural gas.

32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Charles Rose lived in the country with his father, who taught him to read and to write. Mr. Rose told his son that, when his morning lessons were over, he might amuse himself for one hour as he pleased.
There was a river near by. On its bank stood the hut of a poor fisherman, who lived by selling fish. His careful wife kept her wheel going early and late. They both worked very hard to keep themselves above want. But they were greatly troubled for fear that their only son should never learn to read and to write. They could not teach him themselves, and they were too poor to send him to school.
Charles called at the hut of this fisherman one day, to inquire about his dog, which was missing. He found the little boy, whose name was Joe, siting by the table, on which he was making marks with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing pictures.
“No. I am trying to write,” said little Joe, “but I know only two words. Those I saw upon a sign, and I am trying to write them.”
“If I could only learn to read and write,” said he, “I should be the happiest boy in the world.”
“Then I will make you happy said Charles.” I am only a little boy, but I can teach you that.”
“My father gives me an hour every day for myself. Now, if you will try to learn, you shall soon know how to read and to write.”
Both Joe and his mother were ready to fall on their knees to thank Charles. They told him it was what they wished above all things.
So, on the next day when the hour came, Charles put his book in his pocket, and went to teach Joe. Joe learned very fast, and Charles son began to teach him how to write.
Some time after, a gentleman called on Mr. Rose, and said, “Charles did not always amuse himself. I often see him go to the house of the fisherman. I fear he goes out in their boat.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
